WASHINGTON D.C. — A 17-year-old boy was killed and 20 people were shot, including an off-duty police officer, in Washington D.C. early Sunday morning at a large gathering.The victim was identified as 17-year-old Christopher Brown and police say the off-duty 1st District police officer was shot and is in the hospital fighting for her life.Officers said another 17-year-old was shot and the other victims were all adults and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.The police chief said there were multiple shooters and at least 11 of the 20 people shot were women. “There was some kind of a dispute,” said Police Chief Peter Newsham, with the Metropolitan Police Department. “Multiple weapons were produced,” he told reporters. He said a motive for the shooting wasn’t clear.The chief also said they would be talking to building management about the gathering and officers will be looking at whether more could be done to break up the group.At this time, officers believe the gathering started late Saturday night and shots were fired just after midnight. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- For weeks now, protests have touched every part of America, drawing people out of their homes and into the national debate over police reform and racial inequality.“Hands up – don’t shoot! Hands up – don’t shoot!” could be heard from protesters at a recent gathering in Ville Platte, Louisiana.Yet, while free speech is a part of the First Amendment, it doesn’t extend as far as you might think.One example: your job.“Those protections are nuanced,” said Mark Gaston Pearce, who is with Georgetown Law’s Workers Rights Institute and is a former chairman of the National Labor Relations Board under President Obama. “People are under the false impression that a private sector employment relationship affords you all of the rights that are guaranteed to you by the constitution – but it does not.”In other words, an employer, in a state where employment is “at will,” could potentially fire someone for attending or participating in a protest.“Provided, of course, that it’s non-discriminatory,” Pearce said.There are a few exceptions. Federal and state employees are protected because they work for the government. Unions also have some protections. Also, four states: New York, North Dakota, Colorado and California have specific laws protecting employees’ free speech rights.“But that’s four states in a 50-state country,” Pearce said.There are efforts underway in Congress that could expand free speech protections for employees under the “PRO Act.” It passed the House in February and is now in the Senate.“If labor law is reformed, then that would bring those kinds of protections to the public,” Pearce said.Until then, he added that an employee’s best defense may be found in their employer’s own words.“Oftentimes, a lot of that lies in the employee handbook and the publications they make you sign to prove that you read it – and most employees don’t read it,” Pearce said. “They need to know all of that stuff.”Because even in America, free speech doesn’t necessarily apply everywhere, all the time. 2037

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Deborah Birx is warning Americans who traveled for Thanksgiving and attended a large gathering that they should assume they were infected with the coronavirus.The coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force is advising those who gathered with numerous loved ones for the holiday to get tested in next few days.“If your family traveled, you have to assume that you are exposed and you became infected and you really need to get tested in the next week and you need to avoid anyone in your family with comorbidities or (who is) over 65,” Birx told “Face the Nation” on Sunday.Birx also says the task force is even asking families to mask indoors if they chose to gather during Thanksgiving and others went across the country or even into the next state.“And if you're over 65 or you have comorbidities and you gathered at Thanksgiving, if you develop any symptoms, you need to be tested immediately because we know that our therapeutics work best, both our antivirals and our monoclonal antibodies, work best very early in disease,” said Birx.During her interview, Birx referred to the current spike in COVID-19 cases as the nation’s “third wave” and compared it to second wave we saw over the summer.“We saw what happened post Memorial Day,” said Birx. “Now we are deeply worried about what could happen post-Thanksgiving because the number of cases, 25,000 versus 180,000 a day, that's why we are deeply concerned.”Birx says she’s worried about how last week’s holiday gatherings may increase the case count even more, especially in states with fewer COVID-19 restrictions. They want to put a new focus on making the stage more inclusive."We're now in the year 2020. I think people have had enough," said Jerome Crooks with Never Famous. Noelle Scaggs with Diversify the Stage agrees. "I've hit my wits end with being the only one. Being the only one on a stage that looks like me, reflects my skin tone."The message that things have to change is growing louder since the death of George Floyd earlier this year. "The music business can't have an effect on society until we've held ourselves accountable," said Binta Niambi Brown with the Black Music Action Coalition. "For those of us who have long desired to advance issues of equity and justice, it (Floyd's death) created this undeniable moment and we felt like we needed to seize it."Brown is a music executive who recently co-founded the Black Music Action Coalition. She says when we look at music labels and publishers, there are few people of color in senior positions. "The reality is that when we improve anything for a Black person or for Black artists, Black executives, we're improving the model for everyone," said Brown.Noelle Scaggs, with the group Fitz and the Tantrums, is focused on having better pipelines to get young minorities into the live music and touring industry through her organization Diversify the Stage. "I think it's just really about widening the net of opportunity and recruitment and really kind of being considerate of your surroundings and I think we, as artists, we do have a responsibility to participate in this work," Scaggs said.Scaggs teamed up with the tour manager behind Never Famous, Jerome Crooks, to expand a resource where touring professionals can market themselves."The promoters and the vendors they have to listen, you know, and they have to want to be better," said Crooks.Live Nation Urban created a Black Tour Directory which lists hundreds of qualified Black professionals in the music industry. The effort is getting noticed, they landed on the cover of a magazine this month."As a Black man in this industry, I just want to move forward. I want to look forward and I want to bring people under my wing and bring them up," Crooks said. Scaggs added, "I would love for an organization like Diversify the Stage to not have to exist anymore. WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House said Wednesday it does not favor an immigration agreement with Congress that would involve extending protections for young immigrants for three years in exchange for three years of border wall funding.Deputy press secretary Raj Shah said the administration continues to negotiate an immigration overhaul that would address the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that protects young immigrants from deportation, while also stopping illegal immigration and modernizing the legal immigration system.Two Republican officials briefed on the talks said the so-called "three-for-three" proposal had been floated in staff-level discussions in recent days.The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.
