SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A heartbroken woman is making a plea for tips after hundreds of family heirlooms were stolen out of her Allied Gardens home.Last Friday afternoon, Mary Anne Madruga got a wrenching call from her husband."Just a moment of disbelief and shock. Am I really hearing what I think I'm hearing?" said Madruga.During a two-and-a-half-hour window when nobody was home, somebody had pried open a back window and made off with hundreds of pieces of jewelry, silver and coins, including more than a hundred pieces of jewelry belonging to her mother, who died of cancer.MAP: Track crime in your neighborhood"On the last birthday of mine before she passed, she gave me a gold and diamond necklace ... and that piece really held a special meaning for me," said Madruga.But perhaps the most painful loss: the more than 10 pieces her artist father - who has also passed - made for her mother.A neighbor's surveillance camera captured him walking up to her home empty-handed. 25 minutes later, he's spotted again, toting a stuffed pillowcase Madruga says belongs to her."It just leaves a hole ... a hole in my heart ... items with special meaning I'm not going to see again," said Madruga.Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 888-580-8477. 1269
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local marketing firm is moving from the East Village to Sherman Heights, and hoping the move can bring the same kind of renewal they saw in their old home to that neighborhood."I think it has a lot of potential," says Reid Carr, the CEO ofRed Door Interactive.Carr started his company in the East Village in 2002, as Petco Park was being built. He's seen the neighborhood grow up over the past two decades, spurred by business investment."To people who come down here, it feels like it changed overnight," he says. "But to be in it, it ebbs and flows with people coming and going and really figuring itself out. It's pretty spectacular."He thinks the same thing can happen in Sherman Heights, one of 35 "Opportunity Zones" in San Diego County."I think it needs this kind of commercial and business corridor to build it up," says Carr. "We're trying to be the first footprint there to do it."Opportunity Zones are federally designated areas that give companies tax breaks on capital investment. The goal is to spread businesses across communities."It signals the areas in our county that are really ripe for investment," says Nikia Clarke, the Vice President of Economic Development for the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation."Companies are looking at places like Sherman Heights as the next high growth parts of our region," she adds.But Sherman Heights comes with a unique set of challenges. The neighborhood was founded in 1868 and is a historic district. That means companies need to comply with design and architecture rules, so they fit into the community.Companies like Jack in the Box and Walmart opened locations in the neighborhood in the past few years, and found success within the restrictions."As a small neighborhood, it's important to us that businesses want to understand where they're coming into and want to work with the fabric of the neighborhood," says Sherman Heights Historian Louise Torio. "We want something designed today that fits into the rhythm of the streetscape."Carr says his business is excited to become a part of the neighborhood and plans to honor the historic feel.He bought the lot near 25th and Market for .2 million and plans another million to renovate the existing buildings."We're going to embrace what's there, revitalize it in some ways and respect it in a lot of other ways," he says.The company hopes to start construction this July and move in by April of 2021. 2460

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A longtime North Park business has been forced to shutter its doors due to the economic toll of the pandemic.A&B Sporting Goods has sat on University Ave. for 79 years. The business told ABC 10News that it thrives off of local youth sports, which have largely been canceled this year due to the coronavirus.Owner Greg Schloss, whose father and grandfather worked at the store before him, said he hadn't planned on closing shop, but could not keep the business going any longer."I've worked here 40 years. The neighborhood is driven by a lot of kids playing ball in this neigborhood. And at the moment, for the past sever, eight, nine months, there's no kids playing any organized sports," Schloss said.RELATED: Rebound: Find resources for small businesses amid the pandemicAs for himself, Schloss said he's not ready to retire and he's hoping some of his longtime customers may be able to help him find a new job.In a Facebook post, the shop told fans they will close as of the end of the year and thanked the community for its support over nearly eight decades."It is with heavy heart that we announce that A&B Sporting Goods is closing shop as of the end of the year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man is searching for the good Samaritan who pulled him from a rip current in La Jolla this week.Patrick Fitzpatrick was swimming at Windansea Beach Tuesday."It took a snap second before I was in control to completely out of control," Fitzpatrick recalled, after becoming caught in a rip current. "There was no way on Earth that I was going to live from this. I was in a panic. I couldn't use my arms and legs now."Someone on shore, only known as "Dustin," noticed Fitzpatrick struggling and swam out to help him."He's a guardian angel. He owe him my life, he saved my life," Fitzpatrick says.Dustin swam out and kept Fitzpatrick calm before more help could arrive and get him to shore.Fitzpatrick is hoping to reunite with his mystery rescuer to say thank you."The humanity that comes from an act of kindness like this, from a perfect stranger," Fitzpatrick said. 892

According to the report, you'll need to make well over 0,000 to qualify for a home loan. 6,270 to be exact. And that's the minimum qualification. The report also places the median home price in San Diego County at 0,000, ,000 above a report from April which indicated San Diego homes had a median price of 0,000. In the state of California, the median home price is more than 8,000, meaning that, on average, you'll need to make 1,500 statewide to pay for a home. What does the housing market look like in the rest of the U.S.? According to data from the association, the median home price in the rest of the country is a modest 5,500. You'd have to make ,820 to qualify for a loan of that size. So why is the California housing market so expensive? There are a lot of reasons, but in a report from the Sacramento Bee, Brian Uhler of the non-partisan California Legislative Analyst's Office gives one reason. Uhler says many places in California are great places to live, so, in an effort to protect the status quo, residents in those communities turn to lawmakers to create barriers to building new housing.Uhler added that California's coastal cities are, as far as housing construction, among the slowest growing in the U.S., comparing their growth to shrinking Rust Belt cities. 1505
