Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation that decriminalizes marijuana use throughout the state.The legislation reduces the penalty for unlawfully possessing marijuana to a violation by a fine, and removes criminal penalties for possession of any amount under two ounces. Actress Allison Mack has pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and racketeering relating to her alleged role in a sex trafficking case.John Marzulli, Public Information Officer for the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York confirmed Mack's plea, which was entered Monday.As part of her guilty plea, Mack admitted to state law extortion and forced labor.Attorneys for Mack did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Mack was arrested in April 2018 and charged for her alleged involvement with an organization called Nxivm (pronounced NEX-ium), a group that claimed to be a self-help program but was, in reality, a pyramid scheme in which some recruits were exploited "both sexually and for their labor, to the defendants' benefit," according to U.S. attorney Richard P. Donoghue.Mack is accused of recruiting women to join what she told them was a female mentorship group when, in fact, it was an organization created and led by Nxivm's founder, Keith Raniere, also known within the group as Vanguard.Last year, Mack, best known for her role as Clark Kent's clever confidant Chloe on CW's "Smallville," was indicted on charges of sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy and forced labor conspiracy, according to a statement released by the Justice Department. A Maui woman who went missing more than two weeks ago in Hawaii after a hike has been found alive.Amanda Eller, 35, vanished after she got injured and lost during the hike on Maui, according to a post on a Facebook page dedicated to finding her. She was reported missing May 9 after hiking at Makawao Forest Reserve on the island. Police found her car in the parking lot.Eller was lost somewhere above Twin Falls in between two waterfalls down a deep ravine in a creek bed. A study released on Wednesday claims that a small number of people are taking antibiotics designed for fish leading to dangerous unintended consequences. Co-author Brandon Bookstaver, Pharm.D., director of residency and fellowship training at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy, released a statement expressing concern over the trend. “While human consumption of fish antibiotics is likely low, any consumption by humans of antibiotics intended for animals is alarming,” Bookstaver said. “Self-medication and the availability of antibiotics without healthcare oversight might contribute to increasing antimicrobial resistance and delayed appropriate treatment. We were particularly concerned that the high volume of positive feedback on the comments about human use might encourage others to attempt to use these drugs.”What makes fish antibiotics unique is that its available over the counter. A bottle of 30 tablets sell for as low as .99 online, the study found. The study found that 55 out of 2,288 interviewed admitted to taking fish antibiotics. But what concerned Michael Ganio, ASHP Director of Pharmacy Practice and Quality, is that the fish pills have the same look as human antibiotics. “What might seem like a less expensive, easier way to treat an assumed infection can ultimately have very serious negative consequences,” said Ganio. “Unlike antibiotics for humans or other animals, these medications are completely unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Even if the pills look the same, it’s impossible to know that medications purchased in this manner contain what the label says and are safe for humans.
