Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she is calling the House back into session this week to vote on a bill prohibiting the U.S. Postal Service from implementing any changes to operations or level of service. The action comes amid growing concerns that the Trump White House is trying to undermine the agency during the coronavirus pandemic while states expand mail-in voting options. A senior Democratic aide tells The Associated Press that House Democrats are likely to discuss the schedule on a conference call on Monday and are expected to be in session next Saturday.Pelosi sent a letter to Democratic members, stating that changes to the post office would "threaten to deny the ability of eligible Americans to cast their votes through the mail in the upcoming elections in a timely fashion. These delays also threaten the health and economic security of the American people by delaying delivery of life-saving medicines and payments. In 2019, 1.2 billion prescriptions were delivered through the Postal Services, including almost 100 percent from the VA to veterans." Any changes would need the approval of the Senate and president. While it's unclear how the Senate would react to such a bill, the president said he would approve assistance for the Post Office with conditions."Sure, if they gave us what we want. And it’s not what I want, it’s what the American people want," Trump said Friday. 1401

Senate Republicans have reportedly drafted a new version of a potential coronavirus stimulus package — but it's unlikely that the bill will be considered for at least a few weeks.CNN and The New York Times reports that Republican Senators are discussing a stimulus package that would include extended federal unemployment benefits, cash for schools and even billion in funding for the post office.ABC News reports that the bill's total cost would be about 0 billion. In terms of unemployment benefits, Republicans' proposed legislation would reportedly offer 0 a week — about half of the 0 benefits the federal government paid out between March and July.Democrats have said they would like the 0 weekly benefits to be extended through the end of the year and expanded to self-employed workers and gig workers. When the 0 CARES Act unemployment benefits expired in July, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to resume benefits at 0 a week, with the requirement that states pay a portion of those benefits. The order will likely remain in legal limbo for some time. The New York Times reports that the Republicans' new stimulus package includes billion in funding to USPS ahead of the 2020 election. With COVID-19 still spreading throughout the country, election officials are expecting a huge increase in voting by mail. Trump, a staunch opponent of universal voting by mail, has previously said he hoped to slow funding to USPS in order to prevent expanding mail-in voting in November. On Tuesday, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said that the USPS would not institute operational changes that workers said would slow mail delivery until after the election.According to CNN, Republicans are also proposing about 0 billion in funding to schools and another round of funding to the Paycheck Protection Program — a federal program that provides COVID-19 funding to small businesses.Earlier this month, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell dismissed lawmakers for their annual summer break. He has not indicated if he would call the Senate back into session prior to early September when it's scheduled to reconvene. 2158

Some motorcycles for the Tempe Police Department are now equipped with upright mounts for semi-automatic rifles.Sergeant Ronald Elcock said the department tested the mounts last year and decided to install them on eight of its motorcycles. In a high-risk situation, Elcock says motorcycles can usually get to a scene much quicker than patrol cars. However, until now, motorcycle officers were only armed with handguns.Elcock said that's been a growing problem, because criminals are using more high-powered rifles and weaponry."We don’t want to go into those situations where we aren’t able to keep the public safe,” said Elcock.Even though the AR-15s are highly visible on the back of the motorcycles, Elcock says they are secured with special technology.“There's a locking mechanism that would prevent anyone, except for the operator, to be able to get at the equipment,” said Alcock. Some worry about the militaristic look of the AR-15s mounted on the back of the motorcycles.“There are people that may be scared to see it,” said Elcock. "However when we explain to them the reason why we have it I think it puts them a little bit more at ease." 1153
