The House of Representatives successfully completed an override of a presidential veto for the first time since the Obama administration on Monday. With overwhelming majorities in both caucuses, the House issued an override of the National Defense Authorization Act.The bill needed a two-thirds majority for a successful override. The bill returns to the Senate, where it will also need a two-thirds majority to pass. The veto was President Donald Trump’s ninth since taking office. Eight previous vetoes were successfully sustained. The National Defense Authorization Act provides the Pentagon with 0 billion in funds, and authorized pay raises for members of the armed forces.Trump objected to the bill due to the Pentagon’s policy of renaming US bases that are named for confederate leaders. Trump also used the legislation as an opportunity to state his grievances on Section 230, a US code that offers legal protection for internet sites and social media companies.A number of Republicans have joined Democrats in condemning Trump for objecting to the defense funding bill.“It’s definitely been erratic at the end here,” Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger said in a Monday interview on MSNBC. “I think he’s more focused on grievances than finishing out strong… The NDAA, veto of that makes no sense, but hopefully, we override that. Section 230, if you have a real issue with Section 230, that’s fine but the defense bill isn’t the place to deal with it. That’s through the Energy and Commerce Committee and others.”Overrides of presidential vetoes are relatively rare. President Barack Obama had just one of his 12 vetoes overridden. President George W. Bush had four of his 12 vetoes not sustained. President Bill Clinton issued 37 vetoes, only two were not sustained. President George H.W. Bush had all but one of his 44 vetoes sustained. 1850
The investigation regarding the photo taken by firefighters at 611 South Green Street is complete. The investigation reveals that firefighters did enter the location to initiate fire suppression operations. However, due to concerns about structural integrity, the firefighters were ordered out to assume a defensive posture. During this transition from offensive operations to defensive operations, a suggestion was made to take a photo, with the retiring battalion chief, in front of the building.Detroit Firefighters risk their lives everyday entering burning buildings and performing dangerous technical rescues. Saving lives and saving property is our mission, and the men and women of DFD execute this mission without hesitation. I hold them in high esteem; we should all hold them in high esteem for their sacrifices. This momentary lapse in judgment brought great embarrassment to our department and our great city. For this poor judgment, all involved will be held accountable. Because this is a personnel matter, I cannot discuss details of the discipline. However, supervisors and above will receive a greater degree of disciplinary accountability. I am satisfied that everyone involved has shown the appropriate level of regret for this inappropriate behavior. The Detroit Fire Department will continue to provide excellent, rapid service to the citizens of Detroit. 1384
The House ways and means committee began its work Monday on a massive tax overhaul, but the day quickly devolved into a partisan food fight, with Democrats claiming Republicans were rushing their bill in an effort to score political points.Just minutes into the hearing, Democrats tried to postpone the mark-up all together arguing that the parties had not had enough time to properly digest the 429-page bill?that was just introduced last week and hadn't been the focus of committee hearings."This bill needs some vetting," Rep. Lloyd Doggett, a Democrat from Texas, said. "In the President's words, it needs extreme vetting." 640
The House Intelligence Committee on Saturday released a Democratic memo in redacted form that seeks to undercut Republican claims of FBI surveillance abuses. The committee made the Democratic memo public after the White House signed off following negotiations between the FBI and the committee's top Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California, over what in the document should be redacted.Earlier this month, the White House objected to releasing the memo, saying that sensitive material had to be removed first. 523
The Nasdaq closed in correction on Wednesday, with tech stocks sinking following disappointing results from Texas Instruments and AT&T.The index finished down about 4%. The Dow was down slopped about 600 points Wednesday afternoon.Microsoft (MSFT) will report its results after the closing bell Wednesday and analysts are estimating that the company will report an increase of nearly 15% for both sales and earnings per share, thanks largely to strength in its cloud business.Netflix already kicked off tech earnings season last week when it reported a healthy jump in subscribers. But the party was short-lived for it and fellow FANG stocks Facebook, Amazon and Google.Netflix (NFLX) rose more than 5% the day after its earnings report but has fallen 9% since then."You can't just say tech is going to do great or even that FANG is going to do great. You have to be more selective," said Daniel Morgan, senior portfolio manager with Synovus Trust Company. 974
