In 2019, only 24,579 acres scorched during the same time period.On top of this, the U.S. Drought Monitor released a report Thursday showing most of California is out of the drought. San Diego is the only county fully highlighted in yellow, indicating it is 'Abnormally Dry'.A very stark contrast to 2018, where most of the map is covered in dark shades of drought. In August of 2018 San Diego was labeled in 'Severe Drought'.While the winter rain cured California's drought, it brought a new problem to firefighters. Tall weeds, and new growth act as kindling, launching fires, according to Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots.So we're not out of the woods.Historically San Diego has had some of it's biggest fires in the Fall and Winter, whipped up by Santa Ana winds. "Our fuels are going to continue to dry out an we're not going to be getting rain for quite a while longer so even though we've had the marine layer sticking in and that's really helped us, in the long run those heavy rains that we need, we're probably not going to see for several months," he said. "Late October is usually when we see the Santa Ana winds. We are expecting our normal winds this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man was stabbed to death outside a Pacific Beach 7-Eleven store late Friday after an argument with another man.The man was stabbed moments after he walked out of the convenience store at about 1 a.m. Saturday, according to San Diego Police. The victim, a 40- to 50-year-old man, got into an argument with another man outside the store before he was stabbed in the upper torso.The suspect, a black male in his 20s or 30s and dressed in a black shirt and dark jeans, fled the scene with a skateboard, police say.San Diego Fire-Rescue paramedics performed life-saving measures upon arrival but the victim was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. They have not been identified.A portion of Mission Blvd. at Grand Ave. was closed until about 6:30 a.m. to investigate. Police have been in contact with local businesses to gather evidence and possibly surveillance video that may have captured the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake along Mexico’s southern coastline Tuesday was felt hundreds of miles away.Thousands of people ran into the streets as buildings swayed back and forth. A hospital in Mexico City was evacuated; patients were sent to wait outside until they were given the all-clear.According to Mexico’s civil protection agency, four people were confirmed dead.The earthquake was centered just east of the popular tourist destination Huatulco, Oaxaca. According to Mexican officials, the damage was not widespread.“Right now, we’re working together with the Mexican Army, the Mexican Marines, and the National Guard,” said Ricardo Gamez, personal secretary to the mayor of Huatulco.“The Mayor, Giovanne González García, has visited hospitals, checking buildings, homes,” he said. “We have a lot of damage. We are doing evaluations of the houses and the buildings.”Gamez said shelters were set up for anyone in need.In San Diego County, Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina was left with concerns as he has close ties to the coastal town.“There’s a strong Oaxacan community in southern California, especially San Diego,” said Dedina. “Most hardcore surfers in San Diego know that coast really well.”Outside of his duties as mayor, Dedina runs Wildcoast, an international team that conserves coastal marine ecosystems and wildlife, including sea turtles in Mexico.“We have an office in Huatulco, our office received some damage I talked to our staff member there who was shaken up and in the office when the earthquake happened,” he said. “Talked to our interns, we have two paid interns that come from an indigenous community where they work to protect sea turtles; they were on the road near the epicenter when it happened.”Dedina said all three people were not injured.“It’s really a remarkable place in Mexico and probably some of the warmest, friendliest people on the planet,” he said. “Very shocked when we heard this happened and wishing our best to all our friends in Oaxaca.” 2024

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of recent cyber-attacks on Southern California school districts has shown a new front in the war against computer criminals. Hackers have started to target schools and school districts for ransomware attacks."What they're looking for, ultimately, is money," says Kierk Sanderlin, the Head of Engineering for Check Point, a cyber-security firm.Sanderlin says the hackers will spend months using malware and fishing campaigns to gain access to computer systems. Then, when the time is right, they'll launch the ransomware attack, shutting down the system and demanding a ransom to restore access."They want to impact the environment in such a negative way, at such a critical time, that you will be willing to pay," says Sanderlin.Over the weekend, the San Bernardino School District had its servers shut down by a ransomware attack. And in August, San Dieguito Schools lost the ability for parents to register their students for classes because of an attack.Sanderlin says there have been 50 similar attacks on schools throughout the country in 2019.Sanderlin says the criminals typically want to make money from the ransom. But, he warns they can also use their access to the systems to steal the personal information of students, teachers and families.If they do that, Sanderlin says they can sell the information on the dark web, making people vulnerable to identity theft."All of that intellectual property, identification for student records, social security numbers, anything they can mine and sell on the dark web, they're going to do that," he says.School districts have become easy targets because many of them don't upgrade their cyber security frequently enough. Sanderlin compares it to fighting a modern war with antique weapons."We have to start treating cyber-security as something that's far more important than we have in the past," he says. "We can't be an ostrich sticking our head in the ground anymore. We have to realize this is important and do it the right way."He says parents need to become advocates for better cyber security, urging districts to invest in upgrades to protect their networks. He also advises people to use dark-web monitoring services. Those regularly scan the dark web to see if your personal information is for sale.Both San Bernardino and San Dieguito say their students' information was not stolen in the recent attacks.
