BERLIN, July 14 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to start a four-day visit to China on Thursday, a move widely expected to boost the countries' bilateral economic ties and political interactions.The fourth visit of Merkel to China since she took office in 2005 is part of the high-level interactions boosting the bilateral ties.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Merkel met at the nuclear security summit in April in Washington, followed by a state visit of German President Horst Koehler to China a month later. Leaders of the two countries also discuss world affairs through hot-lines.Further boosting bilateral relations between China and Germany is in the interests of both countries, especially in trade and economy.Germany's total exports dropped 18 percent last year due to the global economic slump, while its exports to China climbed 7 percent, the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported.Sino-German relations have been increasingly important under the new, post-crisis situation, the newspaper said.Bilateral trade last year hit 105.73 billion U.S. dollars despite the global downturn, accounting for more than a quarter of the total China-Europe trade.German officials have said that a large troupe of German businessmen, from sectors such as energy, automobile, finance and retail, are among the members of the delegation led by Merkel, suggesting that trade and economic issues will top the agenda of the visit.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Floods in China have killed 377 people this year, as of Friday, and left 142 others missing, the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Friday in a statement on its website.Further, flooding in 2010 has affected 64.57 million people in China's 22 provinces, municipalities and regions, as well as inundating about 4 million hectares of crops, the statement said.A total of 4.35 million people have been evacuated due to the flood waters, which destroyed 368,000 homes and caused economic losses reaching 75.6 billion yuan (11.13 billion U.S. dollars), according to the statement.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited flood-hit Fuzhou City in the eastern province of Jiangxi Thursday to inspect the fight against flooding and review disaster relief efforts. BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), one of the main gauges of inflation, will peak in August before starting to fall in the following months of the year, an economist said Sunday."The CPI is likely to surpass 3.3 percent in August but that will be the highest level for the year," said Lian Ping, chief economist at Shanghai-based Bank of Communications.He said commodity prices will remain relatively low in the short term as market concern about a weak economic recovery linger and as the European debt crisis spreads.Chinese inflation will also ease due to China's slower economic growth rates and a fall in the price of industrial goods, Lian added.However, long-term inflationary pressures cannot be ruled out, due to potential rises in the cost of food, labor and natural resources, he said.Lian said he expects inflationary pressures to grow in March and April next year.Largely on the back of rising food prices after widespread flooding wrecked crops and disrupted shipping, China's July CPI rose 3.3 percent from a year earlier, the fastest rate since October 2008.The CPI for the first seven months of the year stood at 2.7 percent, below the whole-year target of 3 percent.

HARARE, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Secretary-General Sindiso Ngwenya on Tuesday urged China to enter into joint ventures with Africa's largest regional trading and economic grouping to capitalize on the customs union that was launched last year.The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, boasting 19 member states and a population of more than 450 million, is endowed with vast natural and human resources that make it a fertile investment destination, Ngwenya said."With a combined population of 456 million and a combined Gross Domestic Product of 450 billion U.S. dollars, this region is very rich in natural resources, rich in human resources and land for agriculture."This region will therefore become the region of first choice for investment and has the potential to feed the whole world," Ngwenya told Xinhua in an interview.He said China should take COMESA as its preferred investment destination and increase trade with Africa's largest trading and economic grouping.Ngwenya has previously urged more Chinese investment in the manufacturing sector so that Africa can move up the value chain and increase the incomes of its people while ensuring that less wealth is exported abroad.Trade between COMESA countries and China has also been growing by between 50 percent and 100 percent depending on the country, but on average by more than 50 percent annually and by the end of 2008 China-Africa trade was approaching the 100 billion U.S. dollars, according to Ngwenya.Ngwenya said the COMESA Customs Union presented immense opportunities for the Asian giant to deepen and consolidate economic cooperation with member states, most of whom it had strong bilateral, economic and political ties with. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a massive rain-triggered mudslide in Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 702, with 1,042 others still missing, local civil affairs authorities said Tuesday afternoon.Some 1,243 people have been rescued, Tian Baozhong, head of the provincial civil affairs department, told a news conference.Of them, 58 who were seriously injured had been hospitalized, Ma Chengyang, deputy director of the provincial publicity department, told another press briefing Tuesday night.Torrential rain on Saturday night prompted an avalanche of sludge and debris to crash down on the county seat of Zhouqu early Sunday morning, ripping many houses off their foundations and tearing multi-story apartment buildings in half.The mud-rock flow has leveled an area of about 5 km long, 300 meters wide and 5 meters deep in the county seat with more than 2 million cubic meters of mud and rocks, severely damaging power, telecommunication and water supply facilities.About 45,000 residents have been evacuated, as mudslides have destroyed more than 300 homes and damaged another 700. Moreover, 3,000 homes have been flooded.More than 4,400 tents have reached Zhouqu but most of them have not yet been set up due to a lack of open space, Tian said.About 16,000 more tents from the Ministry of Civil Affairs are still in Lanzhou, the provincial capital, Tian said.The mountainous terrain has hampered disaster relief operations. Rescuers could only set up 100 tents in two settlement centers on the playgrounds of two middle schools."We have adequate tents, but insufficient space to pitch them," said Zhang Hongdong, a worker with the county's Red Cross Society.Most people affected by the disaster sought shelter with their relatives and friends in nearby regions, Zhang added.
