CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman was stabbed in the parking lot of the Carlsbad Costco Friday evening, police said. Officers arrived at the store at 951 Palomar Airport Road east of Interstate 5 just before 3 p.m. They found the victim in serious condition with several stab wounds.The suspect, 62-year-old Charles Higgins, left the scene before police arrived. He was arrested later in Temecula with the help of Murrieta Police, the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.Police say the victim and suspect knew each other and this was not a random act. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — A large plume of smoke could be seen over Camp Pendleton on Wednesday, as fire crews battled the De Luz Fire.The fire was reported just before 1:30 p.m. on the west side of De Luz Road, according to Camp Pendleton officials. It wasn't clear how large the fire was at the time, but officials say there was a threat to structures and precautionary evacuations were taking place for De Luz Housing and surrounding buildings, including the CDC, school, and NCIS locations. CHICAGO, Ill. -- The IRS says it has issued more than 159 million stimulus payments in just over two months. Yet, even today there are countless eligible Americans who say they’ve fallen through the cracks.In New York state, Hanna Brandow has no idea why she hasn’t gotten a stimulus payment.“My sister and I who both have not gotten the check yet. We did our taxes this year and got our returns already,” said Brandow. “So, it's very strange.”In California, Alexis Lopez is also in limbo.“For most people, it was like 'this person got it, this person got it,' said Lopez. "I was like, ‘well maybe there's some delay with mine.’ No big deal.”And in Ohio, Karen Melroy is also stuck in in stimulus purgatory.“I received my refund by a direct deposit,” said Melroy. “So, there's no reason I can think of why I shouldn't have received one.”All of them say they get the same message when checking on the IRS website.“I normally add a few more expletives to mine when I see it, but it's something to the effect of payment status not available,” said Melroy.It turns out they’re not alone. I did it twice and hit a dead end,” said Brandow.Because IRS offices remain closed due to the pandemic, the agency tells us that call center agents are working from home. That means they don’t have access to secure personal information specific to each case.“This was designed poorly obviously because it doesn't tell you which of those things happen and if it is a glitch, it doesn't tell you what kind of a glitch,” said Probasco.The IRS is doing a phased reopening at key processing sites and call centers.The IRS tells us some employees have returned to work in Kentucky, Texas and Utah. They say they will follow state and local guidelines as employees return to work in Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, Michigan and by the end of June in Indiana, Ohio, California, Oregon and Puerto RicoBut if you can’t get your payment issue resolved by the end of the year, you may have to claim your unpaid stimulus assistance on next year’s tax return as a credit.“That doesn't help me today,” said Melroy.That's a sentiment many like Alexis Lopez share as they struggle to rebound financially from the pandemic.“You're left in limbo wondering, 'am I ever going to get this stimulus check that most Americans received?' (KGTV) — The grandmother of the 17-year-old who's accused of stabbing Lisa Thorborg to death on a Carlsbad hiking trail in November doesn't believe her grandson could have committed the crime.Christie Hernandez said that she talked to her grandson, Haloa Beaudet, just after Tuesday's virtual court hearing where new surveillance images were revealed and the judge allowed the release of the teen's name. Images of his face have been ordered to remain withheld from the public."[He said] 'I'm strong. I'm going to be positive. You and papa [don't need to] worry. Tell everyone in the family that I'm okay and I'll be home soon," Hernandez told ABC 10News.RELATED: Judge releases name of Carlsbad teen murder suspect, new surveillance imagesOn Wednesday, the DA's Office confirmed that it filed a motion to request that the teen be tried as an adult but that it will take almost a year before a hearing is set where a judge will make the determination.The prosecution said this week that a surveillance camera captured Beaudet running barefoot on the street away from the trail a few minutes after Thorborg was believed to have been killed.Other images show him on the trail in the days after the murder. Detectives said that his DNA was found on the victim's shorts and a pair of his sandals were found near her body. His attorneys argue that he is a free spirit who often left his sandals behind and Thorborg may have picked them up, which is how his DNA got on her."He would not have done this. It's like stabbing me in the neck," added Hernandez.Hernandez said that he had been living with her and doing online schooling for the last two months after moving to San Diego from Hawaii. She described him as a kind young man who is incapable of violence. "We go to the store and he's helping little old ladies pick out which watermelons are good and which grapes are the sweetest and holding doors open. So, this just really baffles me," she stated.
