Things looked grim aboard the Southwest flight.About 20 minutes after their flight departed from New York, passengers say they heard what sounded like explosions. The emergency from an engine failure appeared to have shattered a window on the plane. And what was most dire was that a female passenger was being sucked into the hole left by the broken glass. In those tumultuous moments with oxygen masks dangling down the cabin and passengers screaming as they struggled to save the woman, none of the panic came through in the voice of a pilot on Southwest Airlines Flight 1380.Tammie Jo Shults' name has not been officially released by Southwest Airlines, but passengers who were on the flight have identified her as the pilot. Many of them are praising her for how she handled the emergency Tuesday. In air traffic control audio, a female pilot spoke calmly and slowly, describing the emergency that was unraveling more than 30,000 feet in the air -- all the while trying to land a damaged plane suffering engine failure."We have a part of the aircraft missing," she told air traffic control. As they spoke briefly about the emergency landing the plane would have to make in Philadelphia, she asked matter-of-factly: "Could you have the medical meet us there on the runway as well? We've got injured passengers."Air traffic control responded: "Injured passengers, OK. And is your airplane physically on fire?""No, it's not on fire," she replied. "But part of it is missing. They said there's a hole and that someone went out."The air traffic controller responded: "Um, I'm sorry. You said there was a hole and somebody went out? Southwest 1380 it doesn't matter we will work it out there."The plane went from an altitude of 31,684 feet to just about 10,000 feet in a little over five minutes time, according to data from FlightRadar24.com.The plane descended precipitously, passenger Kristopher Johnson said, but the pilot regained control and informed passengers the flight was headed to Philadelphia.Another passenger Marty Martinez said he heard, "Brace for landing. Brace for landing."It was a rough landing, he said, and things were still so chaotic that he wasn't sure if the plane was going to crash."It was just all incredibly traumatic, and finally when we ... came to a halt, of course, the entire crowd was (in) tears and people crying and we were just thankful to be alive," Martinez said.Kathy Farnan, a passenger said that the crew knew what they were doing and kept everyone calm."The pilot was a veteran of the Navy," Farnan told CNN. "She had 32 years in -- a woman. And she was very good."When it was all over, the pilot came out of the cabin and hugged everyone, telling them, "You all did a great job. You did a very good job," said passenger Amy Serafini. They not only praised her technical skills, but her professionalism after they landed.Passengers told CNN affiliate WPVI that she walked through the aisle and talked with passengers to make sure they were all right.Another passenger, Alfred Tumlinson told WPVI: "She has nerves of steel. That lady, I applaud her. I'm going to send her a Christmas card, I'm going to tell you that, with a gift certificate for getting me on the ground. She was awesome."Johnson posted a picture of the shredded engine and thanked the crew, calling them #angelsinthesky. He also tweeted a photo of the crew, calling them heroes. "We lost an engine mid-flight and they guided back to Philly."The female passenger, whom witnesses said was pulled back in from the broken airplane window, died at a Philadelphia hospital, authorities said. Seven others were treated for minor injuries. The plane had departed from New York, bound for Dallas.The-CNN-Wire 3713

There's outrage among Michiganders waiting for unemployment benefits after learning a state employee allegedly teamed up with his barber's wife and stole over a million dollars in unemployment money. This is a horrific case of greed, especially with so many people depending on that money, and now finding out a state employee was benefiting at their expense.“It’s just heartbreaking to think about. It’s just like they don’t have a conscience,” said Melissa Filar.Filar has been waiting 14 weeks for unemployment and after learning a state employee is accused of taking over a million dollars in aid she says, “the hits just keep coming.”“There are a lot of horrible people out there; I think they’re really selfish," Filar said. "They probably see this as a golden opportunity to get rich."Federal prosecutors says 41-year-old Jermaine Rose, a claims examiner with the state unemployment insurance agency, teamed up with his barber's wife, 36-year-old Serenity Poynter, to steal more than a million dollars in unemployment aid meant for people in need.“They’re diverting the money and using it for their own greedy purposes and that is really sad, because right now we are at a time where thousands of people in Michigan are out of work because of the pandemic,” said U.S Attorney Mathew Schneider. The feds say Poynter filed more than a dozen fraudulent claims using different social security numbers, and also different names.“When you steal money from the unemployment system, you’re really stealing money from the people who need it and that money can go to pay for bread, for milk for food,” Schneider said.Rose and Poynter are charged with mail and wire fraud and theft of government funds, punishable up to 20 years. For Michiganders like Filar, still waiting for unemployment, she says more needs to be done to take care of people who are struggling.“I’m like going through my entire life savings and I have no money coming in right now," she said. "I am an artist. I do commissions but it’s peanuts compared to what I have to spend. So, it’s like I don’t know what to do."Rose is the second state employee charged in a scheme to steal pandemic aid from people who lost their jobs. This story was originally published by Alan Campbell at WXYZ. 2258

Time is running out with just five days to go before funding expires for several key federal agencies and no deal in sight to avert a partial government shutdown. On Capitol Hill, Republicans and Democrats alike have made clear they don't want a shutdown, but lawmakers left Washington last week without a resolution in an ongoing standoff over funding for President Donald Trump's long-promised border wall. The administration and congressional Democrats appeared to be no closer to reaching an agreement over the weekend.White House senior adviser Stephen Miller said on Sunday the administration would do "whatever is necessary to build the border wall," saying "if it comes to it, absolutely," when asked on CBS's "Face the Nation" if that would mean a partial shutdown. But Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer insisted on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the President is "not going to get the wall in any form," saying the votes aren't there in the House or the Senate. The window is narrow this week for Congress to take action. The Senate will be back on Monday, but the House of Representatives isn't expected to return until Wednesday evening. That leaves little time before funding runs out at midnight on Friday for a number of federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, and other parts of the government.Trump wants billion in wall funding, but that number is a non-starter for Democrats. Any spending legislation would need to pass with at least some Democratic votes since it would have to clear a 60-vote threshold in the Senate where Republicans only have a 51-seat majority. Some congressional Republicans were talking openly at the end of last week about the possibility that lawmakers could punt the border fight by passing a temporary, stopgap spending measure. If Congress and the White House agree to a short-term funding patch that could leave the issue for the new, incoming Congress to resolve in January.Outgoing Republican Rep. Jeff Denham of California told CNN's Kate Bolduan on Friday, "At this late in the game, I think a short-term resolution is in order, something that would allow the next Congress to actually come in and negotiate a much larger, longer agreement.""The question is ... will we kick the can until the day after Christmas, January 2nd or 3rd, or whatever?," Republican Sen. Richard Shelby, the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, told CNN on Thursday. "I don't know. There has to be some sort of breakthrough."So far, however, there has been no apparent breakthrough, and the threat of a partial shutdown moves closer to becoming a reality with each passing day.The President defiantly said during a dramatic meeting last week with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Schumer that he would take responsibility for a partial shutdown if one takes place."I'll tell you what, I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck," Trump told the top Senate Democrat. "So, I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I'm not going to blame you for it."If a shutdown takes place, it would be limited in scope. Congress has already funded roughly 75% of the federal government through September 2019, including the Pentagon as well as the Departments of Health and Human Services and Labor. But that doesn't mean a partial shutdown that would start just days before Christmas wouldn't be disruptive. In the event of a shutdown, some federal employees would be deemed essential and would continue to work, but their pay would be withheld until the shutdown is over.Other federal employees would be placed on furlough, meaning they would effectively be put on a leave of absence without pay. Congress could move to order that furloughed employees be paid retroactively after the shutdown is over, but that is not guaranteed. 3870

There are plenty of services available to get food delivered to your door. But Uber plans to take delivery to a new level by using drones. The company reportedly plans to launch a food delivery service using drones by 2021.   How soon could this happen? Futurist Thomas Frey says it’s coming whether we want it or not.   "With all the emerging technology, we still have to work our way through the crappy stages before we get to the good stuff," says Frey.   Delivering food to anyone anywhere is a challenge  "Delivering something like food is a lot messier and a lot more time sensitive than delivering a product we're getting from Walmart or Amazon or something, says Frey."Part of the problem with drones is that we have to get the FAA to OK deliveries like this, and that is not a simple thing to do."   And with the convenience, comes a price.  "Eliminate a lot of human labor in doing something like this, so the reasons companies are pushing this so hard is it gives them a competitive advantage,” explains Frey. “It takes much of the labor costs out of this arrangement."  Overall, the good side of technology usually outweighs the bad, Frey says."See, drones can be very dangerous. The same ones that deliver foods or products to your door step they can also deliver bombs or poison or spy on your kids,” Frey says. “We have to guard against abuses of this technology."  Before this can happen, companies will be need to get a license and go through security training in order to get clearance.   1578
