Businesses are making changes to workspaces to bring employees back safely, but there's a question of how much influence they can have over what you're doing outside of work.Some employers are implementing return to work surveys that will ask if you've been around somebody who's been exposed to COVID-19.A St. Louis County executive is pushing for companies there to ask workers if they've been social distancing outside of work, along with others they've been with. This comes after leaders there learned people traveled outside the city over Memorial Day and didn't do this.“The society for human resource management" tells us employers have to be careful,” said Amber Clayton with the Society for Human Resource Management. “It’s not very practical to have an employer actually monitoring someone's social media and you don't want to make an assumption either that someone is not social distancing just because you heard about it or saw it in a picture. They may have been with immediate family members that they've been in the house with for a very long time.”But she says if employers know for a fact you haven't been social distancing and have been exposed to COVID-19, they can require you to work from home or to self-quarantine for 14 days.You may not get paid while you're self-quarantining, though.If your boss asks you what you're doing for the weekend, it's really up to you if you want to share this information.Employers are providing workers with the CDC guidelines about social distancing and wearing masks to keep them safe. But then, it's really up to you.“The employers and the employees need to trust one another, and employees should be letting their employers know if they've been exposed even if there hasn't been an implementation of a survey in place,” said Clayton. “They should let their employers know if they're sick, if they're not feeling well, so that they can stay home or leave work if they actually came into work.There are "lifestyle discrimination" or "off duty conduct laws" that protect you outside of work, if what you're doing is lawful. 2092

I’ve lived here for many, many years, since I was 5 years old and I taught for 38 years. Bob and Shirley Hansen were on a fishing trip when they woke up at 3 a.m. Monday to the sound of someone beating on the side of their boat.Bob looked over the side and saw five people in their underwear, he told CNN affiliate KEYT-TV. Then he saw another boat in the distance, fully engulfed in flames."Flames probably 30 feet high. It was totally gone," he said. The first thing he did was call the Coast Guard, he said.The 75-foot commercial diving boat, called the Conception, caught fire Labor Day off the coast of Santa Cruz Island in Southern California.The Hansens were able to rescue the five crew members who made their way to their boat. Eight people have been found dead so far, and 26 are missing.Shirley said some of the rescued crew members told them about the moments on the boat before the fire. One said that a 17-year-old girl on the Conception was celebrating her birthday with her parents, she said."It was such a hopeless, helpless feeling to watch that boat burn and know there were only five people at our boat and there was nothing we could do," she said.She also said the five people didn't have any form of communication on them -- no keys or phones -- and she hopes they get plenty of help.Bob told KEYT he doesn't feel he deserves to be called a hero."I was just a guy there in that place. BARTLETT, Ill. — For parents who are caregivers of adults with disabilities the question about who will care for them after they’re gone is haunting. And even for those who understand the system and plan ahead, the course is challenging. It’s something Liz Mescher knows all too well.“It should not be this hard,” she says as she puts on display the stacks of forms, denials and appeals she has organized in piles and folders in her kitchen. Mescher says trying to get the benefits her sons need is a never-ending battle. “I mean that's all I do, my counter gets filled with paperwork,” Mescher says.Caring for her two sons is more than a full-time job. “We're on top of them all day long. So, they're really not out of our eyesight,” she explains.Both her sons Eric and Ryan, are in their 20s and have autism.“The younger one has a lot of anxiety and the older one just can't tolerate being touched,” Mescher says. And as they’ve grown older, caring for the men under the same roof has become increasingly difficult.“So the goal is to get placement for Eric to go into housing so he can be happy, and we could probably get a little break,” the mother says.But the wait lists for services like group home placement are long. As of 2017, 707,000 people were on waiting lists in 40 states. That’s an increase of 8% from the previous year.In Illinois, where the Meschers live, the wait list is more than 19,000. Meg Cooch, the executive director of Arc Illinois, says the state is not unique. Cooch’s advocacy organization focuses on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. “There are lawsuits around the country looking at waiting lists and looking at people getting access to community services because it's such a problem,” Cooch says.Resources, funding and housing options for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are dwindling. Professional caregivers are becoming less willing to do the job for what states are willing to pay. “It's not a minimum wage job,” Cooch explains. “And as a result, we are competing with fast food and with Amazon paying an hour to be able to find people to be able to provide these supports.”With one in four cared for by family members who themselves are aging, experts say we are in the midst of a full-blown caregiving crisis.“It's going to be a crisis now and it's going to be even more of a crisis in the future,” Cooch warns.Approximately 39.8 million caregivers provide care to adults with a disability or illness. What’s startling is that more than half of these families say they have no plan in place for when the caregiver passes away. Over the last eight months Mescher has applied to 16 group homes. She hasn’t heard back from any of them. “These kids have to have a place to go," Mescher said. "They have to have a place as adults to go. What are you going to do with them? You know one day we're not going to be here. Where are they going to be? They have to be settled.”For parents like Mescher it’s that uncertainty of what will happen to her children when she’s gone that’s most unsettling. 3109
Are you ready for fall? Dunkin' hopes you are ready as it announced on Monday that its pumpkin spice flavors will be available on Aug. 21. According to Dunkin', its stores will feature several new products: A Cinnamon Spice Pumpkin Spice Latte and Apple Cider Donuts and Munchkins donut holes. This is in addition to its lineup of pumpkin flavored coffees, pumpkin donuts and pumpkin muffins. Dunkin's release of the fall favorites might predate Starbucks' release. Starbucks, which hasn't officially announced when its pumpkin spice lattes will be available, generally makes its fall lineup available in late August. Dunkin' also announced that eight of its 12,900 locations will be converted into "Pumpkin" locations on Aug. 14. Those eight Pumpkin locations will be serving free coffee to hundreds of customers, and have pumpkin flavored products available a week early.
