LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s Republican Party has acknowledged owning unofficial ballot drop boxes that state election officials say aren’t allowed. California election officials received reports about the boxes in Fresno, Los Angeles and Orange counties. On Sunday, the secretary of state issued a memo telling county registrars the boxes are illegal and ballots must be mailed or brought to official voting locations. State GOP spokesman Hector Barajas said Monday the party owns the boxes. He declined to say how many exist and where they are located. Barajas said the state’s law governing so-called ballot harvesting allows an organization to collect and return groups of ballots. He said the GOP’s boxes are no different than methods use by Democrats to ensure ballots get returned.Neal Kelley, the Orange County's registrar of voters, said official drop boxes are clearly recognizable and carry the official county elections logo. He said it wasn’t clear how many voters had used unofficial boxes but after receiving reports about them he notified the state and district attorney’s office. 1107

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The popular grocery chain Trader Joe's says it won't be changing ethnic-sounding labels on its line of Mexican, Chinese and other international foods, adding they are not racist. Earlier this month the company said it was looking at changing some labels. But now it says it has no problem with ethnic-food labels like Trader Jose's, Trader Ming's and Arabian Joe. "Decades ago, our Buying Team started using product names, like Trader Giotto’s, Trader José’s, Trader Ming’s, etc. We thought then—and still do—that this naming of products could be fun and show appreciation for other cultures," a press release from the company reads.The company says they were created years ago in a lighthearted effort to promote inclusion and that customers still like them. "We continue our ongoing evaluation, and those products that resonate with our customers and sell well will remain on our shelves," the company said. A change.org petition demanding the change had gathered more than 5,000 signatures by Friday. 1030

A third installment of the “Sister Act” franchise is officially in the works.Disney confirmed Thursday evening that “Sister Act 3” is in development, with Whoopi Goldberg set to reprise her role as Deloris Van Cartier.The entertainment company said the film will premiere on Disney+, but didn’t provide a target release date.Along with starring in the film, “The View” co-host will produce it as well, alongside Tyler Perry. The two have worked together before, most recently in 2018’s "Nobody’s Fool” with Tiffany Haddish.Goldberg has been trying to get “Sister Act 3” made for some time now. In 2018, she and Perry actually suggested working together on it with Haddish during an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live.”"The two of them in 'Sister Act,' that should happen. LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A judge has denied a request from Britney Spears to end her father’s conservatorship over her estate, though the pop star did score small victories in the case.Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny declined to suspend James “Jamie” Spears from his central role in the court conservatorship, but said she would consider future petitions for his suspension or outright removal, The Associated Press reports.Spears’ attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, said he plans to file those petitions.The judge also approved a request from Spears for a corporate fiduciary, the Bessemer Trust, to now serve as co-conservator with her father.During Tuesday’s contentious court hearing, Ingham said his client fears her father and won’t resume her career as long as he has power over it. The 38-year-old singer has been on a hiatus since early 2019.A lawyer for Spears’ father argued during the hearing that he has been an excellent conservator and has taken his daughter from being in debt to being worth more than million.Spears’ conservatorship has been in place since 2008, when the star experienced mental health issues and her public meltdowns were widely reported on. Since then, however, she has made a comeback in her career and held a residency in Las Vegas.Legal experts told the Los Angeles Times that it’s unusual for someone as young and productive as Spears to be in this type of situation for so long and that conservatorships like these are usually used to protect the old, infirm or mentally disabled.The L.A.
