A mother of a 9-month-old baby is upset after she says her daughter received a second degree burn while she was in a daycare in Detroit on Friday.Her daughter attended Lafayette Day Care Center on E. Lafayette Street in Detroit.It was a seemingly normal day for Sabrina Shellman when she picked up her kids at the center Friday afternoon. It wasn’t until she got home, she noticed a burn her daughter’s leg.The family took the baby to the doctors, filed a police report and then contacted Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit.“It’s frustrating, it’s heartbreaking, it makes me really, really angry,” Shellman said.When she picked up her kids, 9-month-old Jayla and 4-year-old Jayden, she said no one told her about the injury.It wasn’t until she changed the baby that she said she noticed something was wrong.“That’s when I noticed the burn on the back of her leg,” she said. “No one bothered to call me. No one informed me of this at all.”Sabrina rushed Jayla to the doctors, who told her it’s a second degree burn. She immediate called the daycare.Shellman said a manager said the injury did not happen at the daycare. The mother said she thinks they are trying to cover it up.“My daughter received a burn," she said. "They should be ashamed of themselves, definitely, they should be ashamed.”Sabrina asked her son if he saw what happened, he says one of the caregivers did it.“Spilled oatmeal on her leg, that’s what he told me,” she said.Now, Sabrina said baby Jayla has been traumatized.“She’s screaming, she’s yelling, she won’t stop crying.”The daycare manager didn’t want to talk on-camera, but said they don’t know how the baby got burned and claims it didn’t happen at the daycare.Sabrina says that’s a lie.“Mistakes happen but the fact that you all tried to cover it up and didn’t bother to call me that says a lot about them,” she said.The most recent report from the state shows the daycare has no violations. WXYZ has requested more information to see if there have been any violations in the past.Shellman has pulled her children from the daycare.She said she is consulting with an attorney because she said someone needs to be held accountable for her daughter’s injury. 2209

A Valrico, Florida mom is sharing her experience on social media after she said she was asked asked to wait outside the Plant City DMV office with her infant daughter.Liz Gatley, a stay-at-home mother of three girls, said she was asked by a representative at the Plant City Tag Office to take her one-year-old daughter outside or come back another day. In a picture on Facebook you can see at least four young children, one in a stroller, and the mothers waiting outside the office. Gatley said her daughter, as well as the other children were not being disruptive and said she's a firm believer of taking them outside if they were. In the post, Gatley wrote, "I was so mad but I was also embarrassed and confused," she said. She went on to say, "for you to embarrass me and be extremely rude, unapologetic and not understanding the fact many moms are stay at home moms with little to no help, is what bothers me."Gatley said she and the mothers stood outside with no bench or air conditioning as they waited two hours to be seen at the office. At the end of the post she said, "if you have children, go to another location!"Doug Belden with the Hillsborough County Tax Collector's spoke with Tampa-based WFTS on Friday afternoon. He apologized to Gatley and the experience at the Plant City office noting it was not the friendly and efficient policy that is in place.Belden said he called Gatley directly and told her he would meet with her at her earliest convenience, even throughout the weekend to help get the facts of what happened. Belden said he is outraged that Gatley experienced this at his office, and that children are always welcome in the offices across Hillsborough County.He went on to say that he will be looking into this employee, and taking appropriate measures -- and even went as far to say he plans to check with the landlord to see if they can install benches outside the office. We asked Belden if Gatley should have gone back inside, and he said "absolutely" adding if he found out about this situation at the time, he would have taken care of this immediately. Gatley said Belden was sincere in his apologies and plans to take him up on his offer of meeting with her as soon as possible.  2349

The structure was carrying two works of art, according to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and state-run news agency TASS.A surveillance video provided by MIA shows three people looking at art in the gallery when a structure carrying two works of art falls over. A person is seen behind the fallen structure.The damaged artworks, according to TASS, include a Francisco Goya etching from the Los Caprichos series and Salvador Dali's interpretation of it. A recent study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that antibodies might protect people who've already had COVID-19 from being reinfected for at least six months.Researchers looked at 12,541 healthcare workers at Oxford University Hospitals in the United Kingdom and were followed for up to 31 weeks.In the study, researchers investigated the incidences of COVID-19 infection by conducting polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests on the healthcare workers who had tested positive and negative, including both symptomatic and asymptomatic cases.The study results showed that 11,364 did not have antibody levels, and 1,265 had positive results, which also included 88 healthcare workers in whom seroconversion occurred during follow-up. A total of 223 anti-spike–negative health care workers had a positive PCR test (1.09 per 10,000 days at risk), up to 100 during screening were found to be asymptomatic, and 123 were to have symptoms, the study found.Researchers said that individuals who had anti-spike antibodies had no symptomatic infections. 1083

A new health hazard is washing up on shores around the world.“They found a lot of it in Italy. They found a lot of PPE in beaches of Japan and Southeast Asia,” said senior scientist Jennifer Brandon, Ph.D. about personal protective equipment, or PPE. “We’re already finding thousands of gloves and masks as the pandemic continues.” Brandon believes more people are using and also improperly disposing of these single-use plastics and says the litter can last several lifetimes.“I would not be shocked if it’s going to be in the hundreds of thousands in gloves and masks in the next years,” she said.Brandon says with grocery stores no longer allowing reusable bags and restaurants serving to-go orders in Styrofoam containers, this is adding to the problem.This swell of plastic pollution has a chain effect, impacting animals and humans.“That plastic is going to get eaten by animals and those animals are what you eat,” Brandon said. “Sometimes it can break down small enough, it even gets into our water supply and sea salts.”Experts say 30 billion pounds of disposable plastic is dumped into the ocean every year. Now, that number is expected to rise even more due to PPE waste.“We expect that plastic pollution will outweigh fish in the ocean if we don’t take care quick action to prevent that from happening,” said Shelley Luce, president of Heal the Bay, a nonprofit with the mission of keeping water clear and clean.“We do beach clean ups year-round and we generally get 700 to 800 people coming out early on a Saturday morning,” she said.With social distancing orders and many beaches closed due to COVID-19, large group gatherings are no longer allowed in some areas.So, Luce is now encouraging people to clean up what she calls “COVID waste” on their own or within their social bubble.“You can do a cleanup in your neighborhood,” she said. “Pick that trash up off the streets because you know where that's going to go, into a storm drain and out into the ocean.”Luce says there are simple solutions for this worldwide problem: properly dispose of PPE or wear a cloth mask, both of which can help stop the spread of coronavirus without creating an environmental hazard. 2187
