CHICAGO, Ill. – Stone carving is a tradition going to the wayside as technology takes over. Right now, there are only a few dozen stone carvers remaining across the United States. Among them is Walter S. Arnold in Chicago. “I am a sculptor and a stone carver. Traditionally, those were two separate professions,” said Arnold. “The sculptor was the creative person who made the model, like a composer for music, and the stone carver was like the musicians in an orchestra.”Arnold believes art is one of the things that define humanity. “You know, building on the old traditions and learning from them are all a part of it. 100, 150 years ago there were thousands of carvers in this country,” said Arnold. “There might be a few dozen now.”People have kind of lost the eye for it, according to Arnold.“People no longer grew up around it,” said Arnold. “Walk around an old city like Chicago and look up and you'll see carving everywhere.”Arnold has been carving all his life.“I think I first took a chisel to a piece of stone when I was about 12 and ended up going to Italy when I was about 20 near the quarries near Carrara where the marble is quarried.”Arnold says gargoyles in particular appeal to him.“They appeal to my imagination, sort of on the edge between what is recognizable and real and natural and human, and what is imaginary and supernatural,” he said. Throughout history, Arnold says our earliest records of civilization come to us through carving and it has been a part of civilizations all over the world throughout history as a way to communicate. “The painter Delacroix, a French painter in the 1800s, once said that the last few brush strokes that will finish a painting and kill it. So, in a way for me, the last few chisel strokes are when I pass it on from me and then it becomes your responsibility to see which piece appeals to you or speaks to you or is important to you.”Arnold says his message is to look at the world with a sense of wonderment, to see things that you don’t expect “To be delighted and surprised, to see the world in three dimensions.” 2089

The CDC's statement comes weeks after previous advisories indicating that dozens have become sick after their dogs consumed pig ear treats. Even after the CDC said two weeks ago that there is a possible correlation between pig ear treats for dogs and Salmonella illness in humans, 34 people have reported an illness. In total, 127 have become ill in connection to this Salmonella outbreak, the CDC says. Nearly 30% of the illnesses have resulted in hospitalizations, the CDC says. The CDC said that the treats came from many different suppliers and is the likely source of this outbreak. DENVER, Colo. – Colorado leaders are connecting relatively small businesses with the idea of making big, positive impacts on the environment.“Cannabis and beer, this is the perfect thing,” said Charlie Berger, the co-founder of Denver Beer Co. Berger’s team is taking part in the state’s pilot program in which his brewery captures its own carbon dioxide and sells it to marijuana growers.“It’s a really cool opportunity for us to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions,” he said. “Talking about two of Colorado’s, really the epitome of our state’s small business environment, is an easy one to talk about.”And it’s a relatively easy process. This brewery captures the Co2 emitted during the fermentation process, stores it in a machine, then ships it off to pot growers where it’s used to help with their harvests.“In front of me is Earthly Labs Co2 capture system,” said Amy George, Earthly Labs CEO. “It has the potential to capture the equivalent of 15,000 trees a year for our craft brewers.”George says this technology was once only available to really large brewers.Her team recently designed a more affordable carbon capturing process for smaller craft brewers, with the goal of reducing a billion metric tons of waste while basically turning IPA into THC.“Climate change is in front of us,” George said. “It’s important to for us to think of all the ways we can invest in technology or change our behavior to meet the needs of future generations.”And it meets the needs of The Clinic, a cannabis company based in Denver.Chris Baca, the operations manager at The Clinic, says this technology will help reduce his company’s carbon footprint – while increasing its yield of the sticky icky.“It’s always good to be ahead of the curve and with something that every grow room uses so much of it; think it’s a great opportunity,” he said. It’s an opportunity to turn what would be waste into a gas needed to grow weed.“Co2 is pretty much used in a combination with the lights to create the photosynthesis process of plants,” Baca said.
