Former President Barack Obama is cautioning activists against using slogans like “defund the police” to achieve policy changes.Obama spoke with Peter Hamby on Snapchat’s “Good Luck America” and was responding to a question about activists who use “defund the police” as a rallying cry."If you believe, as I do, that we should be able to reform the criminal justice system so that it's not biased and treats everybody fairly, I guess you can use a snappy slogan like 'Defund The Police,' but, you know, you lost a big audience the minute you say it, which makes it a lot less likely that you're actually going to get the changes you want done," Obama said.Instead, Obama encouraged them to have a more inclusive discussion with all stakeholders.“If you instead say, 'Let's reform the police department so that everybody's being treated fairly, you know, divert young people from getting into crime, and if there was a homeless guy, can maybe we send a mental health worker there instead of an armed unit that could end up resulting in a tragedy?' (AP) — California park officials have shut vehicle access to a pristine swimming hole in Northern California due to an influx of visitors to the “hidden gem” that has become a popular photo backdrop on social media. The move intended to discourage visitors to Yankee Jim's, a sliver of crystal clear water about 35 miles west of Lake Tahoe, comes as authorities struggle to control overcrowding at recreational sites as coronavirus cases continue to rise in many parts of the state. There are just 12 parking spots near Yankee Jim’s, but last weekend authorities counted more than 300 vehicles parked near the rugged roads surrounding a one-way bridge overhead.Placer County Sheriff’s officials said in a Facebook posting on Friday that the scenic area has exploded in popularity recently."This presents a huge public safety danger, and cannot allow any first responder to access Yankee Jim’s in the event of any emergency or fire," the statement said. 979

(AP) — Police say officers arrested five teenagers Thanksgiving night on suspicion of robbing a San Francisco Bay Area Target and firing shot at security guards before fleeing in a car.The Fremont Police Department says in a statement Friday that officers responded late Thursday to the store at a Fremont shopping mall after several reports of shots fired.It says the teens ranging in age from 17 to 19 stole video games and other items and that when a getaway car arrived, one of them fired multiple rounds into the air as the suspects piled into the car and fled.Officers gave chase in a brief pursuit that ended after the car stopped and one of the suspects tried to flee on foot.The department says officers arrested that teenager and the other four and recovered a gun and the stolen items from the car. 833

Fox News wants its biggest fans to sign up for a streaming service called "Fox Nation."The network is preparing to announce the new product on Tuesday morning, according to The New York Times.The Times said it will be a "stand-alone subscription service available without a cable package."The online channel is expected to start "by the end of the year," according to the report. The content will consist primarily of "right-leaning commentary, with original shows and cameos by popular personalities like Sean Hannity."A Fox News spokeswoman declined to comment ahead of Tuesday's announcement.But the Times story quoted John Finley, a senior vice president at the network, as saying that the "Fox Nation" service is "designed to appeal to the Fox superfan," the "folks who watch Fox News every night for hours at a time, the dedicated audience that really wants more of what we have to offer."Fox's existing contracts with cable and satellite providers limit how much it can stream shows like "Fox & Friends," "Special Report" and "Hannity." So the new product will have new programs."Fox Nation" is the product that the executives had in mind when they hired Tomi Lahren, a stand-out social media commentator, last summer.At the time, the network said Lahren would have a "signature role on an FNC digital product currently in development."Lahren and other Fox personalities will create programming for the streaming service."Fox Nation" is currently the name of the company's conservative opinion site. On Monday night, the site was temporarily taken offline.
