POWAY (CNS) - Authorities today identified a 69-year-old man who was gravely injured when he was struck by a car while walking in the same Poway intersection where sheriff's deputies were investigating a collision in which his wife struck and injured a pedestrian about 30 minutes earlier.Robert Tockstein of Ramona was struck shortly after 8:35 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Twin Peaks Road and Midland Road, and he died at an Escondido hospital early Wednesday morning, according to sheriff's Lt. Dustin Lopez and the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.In the first crash, which happened around 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, Tockstein's wife struck a man who was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection, Lopez said. The victim was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido where he was treated for minor injuries.While deputies investigated the first crash, Tockstein arrived at the scene, Lopez said.Tockstein moved his wife's vehicle and as he was walking back to the scene of the crash he was struck in the east crosswalk of Twin Peaks Road, the Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement.The driver of the Toyota Prius that struck Tockstein remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies, Lopez said.Tockstein was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he was pronounced dead at 1:58 a.m. Wednesday, the Medical Examiner's Office said. 1390

(KGTV) - A North County gun store, Poway Weapons and Gear Range, is part of a group suing the state of California over a law which took effect earlier this year.The law makes it illegal to sell rifles and shotguns to anyone younger than 21. There are exceptions for military, law enforcement, and people with hunting licenses. It was already illegal for those under 21 to buy handguns.Store Director of Sales Danielle Rudolph tells 10News the lawsuit is about sticking up for their customers."The constitution protects anybody that’s an adult in the United States. An adult is 18,” she says.The state legislator who wrote the law says he was inspired to act by the shooting in Parkland, Florida, in which a man is accused of killing 17 students and staff members at a school while using an assault rifle. A similar weapon was used by the gunman in the shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue, which killed one person and injured three others.Supporters of the law say it's a common sense regulation to help keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them.Rudolph says California already has the strictest gun laws in the country and that more aren't needed. She also says the law prevents her store from offering the gun safety and training programs for teens and children that are an important factor in creating a culture of responsible gun ownerships. (KGTV) - A Southern California officer was fatally shot and another officer hospitalized during a standoff with an armed suspect Friday.The officers, whose identities have not been released, were reportedly responding to a barricaded suspect at an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Palomares Street, according to ABC-affiliate KABC."It is with a heavy heart that I must report that one officer did not survive," Police Chief Michael Olivieri said on Twitter. (KGTV) — Suspected Poway Synagogue shooter John Earnest did not have a valid hunting license when he purchased his gun at a San Diego dealer, meaning he was too young to buy the firearm used in the attack, a state senator said Monday. State Sen. Anthony Portantino told 10News that the Department of Justice and Fish and Wildlife confirmed to him that Earnest did not have a valid hunting license when he bought the gun from San Diego Guns on Mission Gorge Rd.On Tuesday, Fish and Wildlife confirmed Earnest's hunting license was not going to become valid until July 1, 2019 — more than two months after the attack. A valid hunting license was one exception to a law Portantino authored that set the age limit to 21 to buy a firearm. The exceptions were for military, law enforcement, and those with a state-issued valid hunting license. The bill's proponents said people under 21 are disproportionately linked to crime. Asked how Earnest did buy the gun, Portantino said it was the big question."He did not have a valid hunting license," Portantino said. "I don't think it was a fault of the law ... I don't know where the mistake was made."Former Gov. Jerry Brown signed the legislation in response to the 2018 mass shooting at Stoneman Douglass High School in Parkland, Fla.
