SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The downtown building at 101 Ash Street has been sitting vacant for most of the last four years and as it continues to sit empty, taxpayers are footing the ,000 per day bill.City Council leaders voted 5-4 — with Council members Vivian Moreno, Monica Montgomery, Barbara Bry, and Georgette Gómezto voting in opposition — to request monthly updates on the building's status and costs for several options presented by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office.The mayor's options included putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursue a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely, the last of which could risk litigation and credit damage.The coronavirus pandemic has cleared out office buildings across downtown San Diego. But emptiness is business as usual for the old Sempra building at 101 Ash.In 2016, the city approved a lease-to-own agreement for the building, valued at million. The idea was to move upwards of 1,100 city employees into the facility.But officials quickly discovered a series of problems requiring major renovations to the site's 19 floors.In December 2019, the city finally began moving workers into the building, only to vacate them a month later when the county found traces of asbestos.So how did the city get into this mess? A new investigation shows it really never did its homework for such a big purchase from the start.The law firm Hugo Parker found that, "at no time, however, did the city formally inspect 101 Ash before closing escrow."In January, councilmember Barbara Bry showed ABC 10News a document that the city accepted the property as is."That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said.An additional new report from Kitchell says the building needs 5 million of repairs, which is well more than what the city paid for it. 1947

According to the agency, the man robbed a U.S. Bank located inside a Vons grocery store at 665 Saturn Boulevard. The suspect reportedly approached the teller and made a verbal demand for cash, telling the employee he had a gun. The man made off with an unspecified amount of cash. Pictures show the man wearing a hooded Padres sweatshirt and mirrored sunglasses. He is described as a white or possibly Middle Eastern man in his late 20s or early 30s. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The future of warfare is in San Diego for the time being. The 21st Century Combined Arms Advanced Naval Technology Exercise is currently taking place at the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific (NIWC Pacific). ANTX West 2019 is roughly two weeks long and features the brightest in the military, academia and industry demoing the latest advancements to see if they are ready for the battlefield. “This isn’t a trade show - this is ‘get people together let’s go do things and see how it goes,’” said Rear Admiral Donald Gabrielson, “this is innovation.” Much of technology of the the last several years has focused on human and machine interactions with virtual reality. “We can give feedback to the industry and say this is eligible for rapid prototyping or this needs some science and technology investment,” said Richard Byers, a systems engineer with the Navy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thanksgiving with the Salvation Army will be different in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic."We knew that we were going to do something," says Captain Sean Kelsley, who oversees the Salvation Army East County Operations. "The question was, what would it look like?"For the past 30 years, the Salvation Army held large, family-style gatherings to feed people experiencing homelessness, the disabled, and families in need at Golden Hall for Thanksgiving. They plan for 1,800 people, plus volunteers.But a gathering of 2,000+ people is strictly forbidden under California and San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines.In its place, the Salvation Army will offer "grab-and-go" style meals at four locations around the county."We're just glad to be able to be here," says Captain Kelsey.
