HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. – As COVID-19 cases spike across the country, parents are struggling with whether or not to send their children back to school this fall. There are tools that can help make that decision though, like state-specific modeling data.Courtney Noffsinger of Hendersonville, Tennessee, is among the many parents grappling with this kind of anxiety.The mother of two has spent most of the blistering hot summer social distancing from other family members and friends. She and her husband even recently purchased an RV to go on camping trips, so they wouldn't run the risk of catching COVID-19 from crowded vacation destinations.For Noffsinger, the idea of sending her kids back to school where they’ll be surrounded by hundreds of other students and potentially exposed to the virus is daunting to say the least.“Parenting is already hard, parenting in the middle of a pandemic has been extremely difficult,” Noffsinger said as she watched her daughter scroll through TikTok.Noffsinger’s two kids haven't been to school since March and are both anxious to get back into the classroom. Her 14-year-old son Keagan is entering high school and her 11-year-old daughter Presley is entering middle school. While both children have asked their parents to return to in-person learning, Noffsinger is nervous about sending her kids back to school, especially given her daughter’s underlying asthma.“As their parents, we want to give them what they want, but we’re fearful, especially when the data keeps changing,” she said.As coronavirus cases continue to rise across the country, school districts are being faced with the reality of trying to provide education to the nation’s young people in the midst of the pandemic. While some of the country's largest districts have decided the entire fall semester will be virtual, many other districts are turning to hybrid models where students will attend school at least one or two days of school a week.COVID-19 has created a complex paradox for both parents and educators. They’re weighing the health and safety of students against the prospect of losing valuable learning and social interactions that can't be replicated online.But both parents and teachers are fearful that sending kids back into school environments will give the virus exactly want it wants, crowds of people to spread across.“Parents don’t like to hear me say it, but we will be undertaking a whole series of experiments across this country and we will have to see how those experiments turn out and be prepared to change what we’re doing to keep up with the virus,” said Doctor Williams Schaffner, who serves as a professor of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University.As COVID-19 cases continue to spike across a large swath of the country, Schaffner says parents need to be vigilant at home when it comes to instilling proper protections like wearing a mask and washing their hands. The more normalized those behaviors are at home, he says, the more likely they’ll be emulated in the classroom. And the less likely it is that the virus will spread.“Model the importance of wearing a mask, practice social distancing. If you do that in your family already, it’ll be easier for your child to understand what’s happening in school,” he said.So, where can parents turn for guidance about whether to send their kids back to school?The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has created the COVID-19 Projection Machine, which gives parents an interactive map to work with. As you scroll over each state, you can see current case numbers, hospitalization rates and most importantly, the positivity rate for your state. Health experts say once a state’s positivity rate crosses 5%, parents and school districts should take note.Since the virus is not under control in the United States, Schaffner says parents, students and educators who are returning to in-person learning will need to be flexible as the year progresses.“If there’s an increase in your community and an increase related to the school itself, that school system will have to figure out if there’s a trigger point there, where they call a time out and everyone stays home and the learning becomes virtual,” Schaffner said.As for Noffsinger, she has decided to let both of her children return to school on a hybrid schedule. It’s a decision she’s told them comes with a great deal of responsibility on their part as well.“We’re fearful for their health, but also understand the importance of their education,” she said. 4518

Harvard Kennedy School has rescinded its invitation to Chelsea Manning to be a visiting fellow at the school this fall, according to a statement from its dean, Douglas W. Elmendorf.Its Institute of Politics had announced on Wednesday that Manning would be one of approximately 10 visiting fellows, but the school withdrew the offer early Friday morning following controversy.Manning is still invited to spend a day at the Kennedy School and participate in a forum with students, but Elmendorf said in a statement that designating her as visiting fellow was "a mistake." 577

But if you're expecting howling, swooshes and crackles, you're in for a surprise. These are vibrations, captured by NASA's InSight lander, which touched down on the Red Planet just last week. The craft will stay put until November 24, 2020, measuring quakes that happen anywhere on Mars.This week, the craft recorded something unexpected."InSight sensors captured a haunting low rumble caused by vibrations from the wind, estimated to be blowing between 10 to 25 mph (5 to 7 meters a second) on Dec. 1, from northwest to southeast," the agency said.An air pressure sensor and a seismometer recorded the noise through the vibrations in the air and vibrations around the aircraft "caused by the wind moving over the spacecraft's solar panels."This is the only time when vibrations from the lander will be recorded by the seismometer, since it will be moved by the craft's robotic armed and placed on the Martian surface, along with other instruments.The craft's landing comes as part of NASA's mission to explore the planet's deep interior.InSight lander's sensors are designed to detect quakes and air pressure through wind vibrations. The lander will measure whether tremors have the same effect as earthquakes. The Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS), the seismometer, will use the vibrations to help scientists configure more about the planet's interior."Capturing this audio was an unplanned treat. A grandfather.“He was also a chef,” Yolanda Green-Samuel added recalling fond memories of her brother, Eugene Green, who was killed four years ago in a hit-and-run incident while he was on a bicycle. She still recalls a conversation she had with local police in Miami Gardens, Florida, one that is seared into her memory.“[Police said] ‘We have no leads and no answers.’ And at that point I said to him ‘that’s unacceptable.'"”I was engulfed in pain,” Green-Samuel added.But she took that pain and channeled it for good. She’s created an organization to help raise awareness and try to decrease the problem of hit-and-run drivers. She says few people know how much more severe the penalties are when you flee the scene. Prison time for suspects who are caught is becoming more and more common. Samuel-Green wants people to know that more often than not the crash is an accident.It highlights an issue that only seems to be getting worse, according to statistics. In 2016—the latest year for which complete data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration exists—there were more hit-and-run fatalities than there have been in the 40-plus years that NHTSA has been keeping track. There were 2,049 people killed as a result of a hit-and-run 2016. Significant in those numbers: 70% of those deaths were to pedestrians or bicyclists. Jacob Nelson is a researcher with AAA, which put out a study highlighting the new numbers. He says one of the reasons for the uptick in pedestrian and cyclist deaths could be the simple fact that there are more pedestrians and cyclists on city streets.“There’s been a huge push from the public health community to get more people outside walking and biking given all the health benefits to doing that,” Nelson said. But he cautions that cities also need to start looking at putting more barriers between non-motorists and vehicle traffic lanes.The other factor that could be playing a part: distracted driving.“That doesn’t matter whether you are a motorist, pedestrian, or a cyclist. You need to pay attention to what’s around you. A lot of these crashes could be prevented in the first place,” Nelson said.And he joins Green-Samuel in urging any motorist involved in a crash to stay put.“The element of people leaving the scene of a crash is not only illegal, but motorists need to realize that staying on the scene of a crash is the right thing to do,” Nelson said. “It can help prevent people from being killed and it can lessen the severity of the injuries people sustain if we make sure people get medical care in that first hour.”Green-Samuel also hopes that through her organization, Just an Accident: Stop Hit-and-Runs, she hopes more people will become aware of the immense power people hold in their hands when driving a vehicle.“I just don't think people realize the responsibly they take when they get behind the wheel of a vehicle," she said. 2984
