The statement came about 24 hours after the news broke that the two teens – 19-year-old Thomas Kanewakeron Gray and 17-year-old Lloyd Skanahwati Gray – had the police called on them by the mother of another prospective student who was also on the official tour at CSU.The woman, who has not been identified, said the boys were making her “nervous” because they were being quiet. The teens, who are Mohawk and moved to New Mexico in 2009 from upstate New York, attend Northern New Mexico College and Santa Fe Indian School, and had gone up for the tour by themselves, their mother, Lorraine Kahneratokwas Gray, told Scripps station KMGH in Denver on Thursday."They scraped together their dollars, made arrangements themselves to register for the campus tour, and took the only car we have and drove up there," Gray said. “And how it ended was even worse.”According to Gray, her sons got all the official paperwork to take the tour, and staffers were aware they were a part of the official tour. But after police arrived, the boys could no longer find the tour, and their mother told them to come home.“When you think about young men of color being shot all over the place, or being arrested…I said, ‘Just get in the car and come home,’” she said. “They’d missed a day of school for this campus tour only to be pushed aside because of some woman’s fears.""It breaks my heart, because they didn't do anything to warrant that," she added, saying she had spoken with some administrators but still had raw emotions. "They're walking on their own ancestors' land, so it breaks my heart."Several CSU officials wrote in a letter about the incident Thursday ahead of the Friday official statement from the university, and said they would be reaching out to the family.“This incident is sad and frustrating from nearly every angle, particularly the experience of two students who were here to see if this was a good fit for them as an institution,” wrote Vice President for Enrollment and Access Leslie Taylor, Vice President for Diversity Mary Ontiveros and Vice president for Student Affairs Blanche Hughes.“The fact that these two students felt unwelcome on our campus while here as visitors runs counter to our Principles of Community and the goals and aspirations of the CSU Police Department, even as they are obligated to respond to an individual’s concern about public safety, as well as the principles of our Office of Admissions,” they continued.Late Thursday, Colorado Lt. Gov. Donna Lynne, who is the chair of the state's Commission on Indian Affairs, issued a statement about the incident and said she'd spoken with CSU's president, Tony Frank."We share concern over the reported treatment of two Native American teens while on a campus tour of Colorado State University. After speaking with CSU President Tony Frank, we believe the university's response shows the seriousness of the issue, and we understand new procedures will be introduced to better manage campus tours," Lynne said in a statement."We want to reiterate our commitment to ensuring public universities are open and welcoming to all students and hope that the young men will not be deterred in their pursuit of attending college in Colorado, a traditional homeland to many tribal nations," Lynne added. 3275

The tragic deaths ... (are) a stark reminder of the dangers our law enforcement professionals face each and every day while protecting and serving our communities. Too often, their service and sacrifice are taken for granted, said Craig Floyd with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. 305

The rapper Drake posted on Instagram, ``My whole energy is just at a low right now hearing this. We just linked for the first time in years and said we were gonna do a new song this summer cause it had been too long. I'm only doing this here cause I want the world to know I saw you as a man of respect and a don. Rest easy ...''Singer/Musician Pharrell Williams tweeted, ``You were about something positive and for your community in every chance you had to speak ... and because of that you inspired millions ... millions who will uphold your legacy forever, Rest amongst the stars.''Rapper Megatron told reporters at the scene, ``Every time I met him (Nipsey) it was love. He was all about helping people.''Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted, ``Our hearts are with the loved ones of Nipsey Hussle and everyone touched by this awful tragedy. L.A. is hurt deeply each time a young life is lost to senseless gun violence.''``My Crisis Response Team is assisting the families coping with shock and grief,'' Garcetti added. As homicide detectives investigated the shooting, Moore noted it ``represents the latest loss in a troubling surge in violence. Since last Sunday 26 victims have been shot and 10 homicides.'' He promised to ``work aggressively with our community to quell this senseless loss of life.''Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who represents South Los Angeles, released a statement calling for restraint in the aftermath of Hussle's killing.``I urge calm and a period of reflection,'' Ridley-Thomas said. ``Violent retaliation for this event will not be tolerated. Our communities have lost too many young men and bright futures to the scourge of gun violence. For healing to occur, even from this terrible incident, justice must be sought through legal means, and community peace must be found.''Hussle transformed himself from a Rollin' 60s Crip to a rap musician and channeled his success into efforts to help other stay out of gangs, according to the Los Angeles Times. He bought shoes for students, re-paved basketball courts and provided jobs and shelter for the homeless, the newspaper reported. He helped renovate a Mid-City roller rink and redeveloped the strip mall that housed his Marathon Clothing shop where he was fatally wounded. 2277

The time-of-use plan does away with the new state-mandated high-usage charge, which more than 80,000 San Diegans hit over a record-hot summer. That led to bills of 0 or more. Scott Crider, SDG&E's vice president of customer services, said he understands 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. is the time people cook dinner, turn on lights and run their air-conditioners. But he said the utility is encouraging residents to conserve when demand on the grid is highest. "What we're really asking our customers to really think about energy just a little bit differently and see if they can make some minor shifts of major appliances, for instance, instead of running your dishwasher at 7 p.m., can you set it on a time to run at 9 p.m. when electricity is cheaper," he said. The price difference between times of use are minimal during the winter. But that changes in the summer, when prices from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for most users will be nearly triple the most affordable hours. 961

The suspect became enraged, removed a handgun from his waistband and shot the additional male, according to a police statement. "The suspect entered a dark-colored, four-door Range Rover and fled east on Sunset Boulevard." 222
