Plans to build a new 4-acre, .5 million park in National City got a boost this week, thanks to a partnership with the federal government.The Environmental Health Coalition will help the city plan the park and the surrounding area, to make sure people can access the park without having to drive there.National City is one of just 10 communities across the country chosen for the Safe Routes to Parks Initiative.The new park will be near 22nd Street and Harding, where an empty field sits right now. As part of the construction, the EHC will help design safer streets around the park."Kids are trying to get from point a to point b and they have to cross through that main road," explains City Engineer Jose Lopez. "Without enhancements to the road, there's no way a 10-year old or 5-year old can cross the street."The EHC will help the city plan curb extensions, a median refuge island in crosswalks and local trails to let people walk through parks instead of along busy streets.According to a release announcing the partnership, communities chosen for the program had high rates of crime and violence, and also high rates of weight-related chronic diseases. The Safe Routes to Parks program  hopes to increase park use and help communities become healthier and safer.Right now the park is still in the planning stages. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A parade of cars and motorcycles circled around a Jewish community center's parking lot on Sunday for a World War II veteran's centennial birthday celebration."Why is everybody here today? Well, you better ask them (family members)," said Mike Katzman, who turned 100 years old on Monday. "I think it's because I am so good looking."While he might have been joking, he was there for a reason."I am one of the luckiest guys in the world to hit 100," Katzman said.He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and served as a specialist in Texas and five other bases and schools throughout the United States.His family wanted to throw him a party at the community center, where he loves to workout, but the COVID-19 pandemic struck.Instead, he had a parade of family, friends and fellow veterans who drove by to say, "happy birthday."He has a few secrets to living this long: working out, giving to others and his special diet from when he was a child."My special diet was bologna. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A 72-year-old man died Friday night after being struck by a semi-truck trailer. San Diego police say the man had pulled off the 905 freeway at La Media Dr. to fix a broken spark plug on his 1980 Honda motorcycle. He was working on the bike when the big rig exited the 905 onto La Media heading east. The driver missed the motorcyclist with the cab but clipped him with the back tires of the trailer, dragging the body for several feet according to investigators. The man was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the semi-truck stopped at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Police say he could face a misdemeanor charge of involuntary manslaughter. 744

Patrick Quinn, a co-founder of the popular Ice Bucket Challenge, died at the age of 37.The ALS Association announced the news on social media Sunday.Quinn was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) shortly after his 30th birthday, according to the association. Since his diagnosis, Quinn raised awareness for the disease, co-creating the widely popular Ice Bucket Challenge.ALS posted the following message of Quinn following his passing:"We are deeply sorry to share that Pat Quinn passed away today. Pat was co-founder of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and an inspiration to millions of people around the world.Pat was diagnosed in March of 2013, a month after his 30th birthday. Immediately after he was diagnosed, he decided he wanted to make a difference in the ALS community. Taking a cue from his friend, the late Pete Frates, Pat established his own team of supporters – Quinn for the Win – to raise awareness and funds for the fight against ALS.Pat, who lived in Yonkers, NY, saw the Ice Bucket Challenge on the social media feed of the friends and family of the late Anthony Senerchia, of Pelham, NY, and knew it was the key to raising ALS awareness. He and his Quinn for the Win supporters, along with Pete Frates and his Team Frate Train supporters, turned the challenge into the biggest social media phenomenon in history.The Ice Bucket Challenge went on to raise 5 million for The ALS Association and over 0 million around the world for ALS research.
