SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 15,000 runners are expected in Balboa Park on Sunday for the 21st annual Susan G. Komen San Diego Race for the Cure.The event will raise funds for Komen's breast cancer programs, including mammography, financial assistance to patients and meal delivery.An opening ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 a.m., and the 5K run and 1K walk/run begin at 8 a.m. at Sixth Avenue and Palm Street on the west side of Balboa Park.According to Komen, six women a day are diagnosed with breast cancer in San Diego and one dies daily from the disease.However, the survival rate is nearly 99 percent if the most common form of breast cancer is detected early, Komen officials said. Many of the organization's programs, such as free mammograms for low-income women, are aimed at finding the disease as soon as possible.A closing awards ceremony will take place after the run.Online registration is closed. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was struck and killed Sunday morning by a hit- and-run motorist in an SUV, in the Sherman Heights community of San Diego, a police officer said.The vehicle was going eastbound in the No. 1 lane in the 1800 block of Market Street, where a pedestrian was standing in the street or crossing Market Street at 1:55 a.m., said San Diego police officer Robert Heims.The vehicle struck the pedestrian and dragged him for approximately 100 feet eastbound on Market Street, Heims said.The motorist fled the location eastbound on Market Street and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.The vehicle was possibly a silver GMC Envoy or similar model, with front end damage.Anyone with any information regarding the death was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 798

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In a first for San Diego County elections, the polls for the Nov. 3 Presidential General Election will open for four days, starting today from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.In light of COVID-19, voters were encouraged to vote from home using their mail ballot. This close to the election, voters are advised to not mail in ballots, as they may not reach the registrar in time.For those who want to vote in person, they can vote early at their assigned polling place from Saturday, Oct. 31 through Monday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.On Thursday, the registrar reported nearly half of the county's 1.95 million registered voters had already cast their ballots, more than double the number received by that point in 2016.More than 937,000 ballots had been received as of Thursday. At this point in the 2016 presidential election, the registrar had received 409,702 ballots.Even so, due to the pandemic and a predicted high voter turnout, the registrar's office is continuing to urge voters to avoid long lines and crowded polling places by voting before Election Day itself.Mail-in ballots were sent to all registered voters in the county on Oct. 5, even those who had not requested one.There are fewer polling places than in past elections, and the location of some polls have changed so voters are encouraged to check the back of their sample ballot and voter information pamphlet before heading out to vote this weekend.Voters casting ballots in person are instructed to bring a face mask and plan to maintain social distance. ``We encourage voters to act early and make voting decisions from the comfort and safety of their home,'' Vu said. ``Mark your ballot, sign, seal and return your mail ballot to a trusted source. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man waiting for an Uber was stabbed in San Diego Sunday morning, according to San Diego police.At 2:08 a.m., a 37 year-old male was waiting for his Uber ride on the corner of 8th Avenue and B Street when he was approached by two female suspects and a male suspect, all in their 20s. The victim began talking to one of the women when she reached into his pocket and stole his cellphone. The suspects ran away and the victim chased them. After he caught up with them, the male suspect turned and jabbed the victim in the right arm.The victim began to bleed and witnessed the three suspects running away and getting into a red Chevy Camaro that fled westbound on B Street. The victim was taken to a hospital with non-threatening injuries.San Diego Police Central Division is investigation.
