SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sea World employees went on a rescue mission Saturday to free a Sea lion pup from a plastic ribbon wrapped around his neck on Boomer's Beach.The timing is poetic, on World Oceans Day. A day that "provides a unique opportunity to honor, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean," according to WorldOceansDay.org.Sea World Animal Care Specialist Brooke Hubbard said they had been monitoring the pup and received another call Saturday. This time it sounded like the 2-3-year-old sea lion was in an area where they could safely remove the ribbon.A rescue that saved the mammal's life, "when there is lining around it's neck it can constrict it's airways and it's esophagus making it so they can't breathe or eat over time," Hubbard said.Video from her supervisor's perspective shows what it was like when the team snuck up on the sea lion, threw their net and cut the ribbon off with a pair of ordinary scissors.When they released the Sea lion, he scooted back to the ocean, "that's the best feeling in the world, especially since we didn't have to bring it back here and rehabilitate it," she said.Hubbard said this is is completely preventable, "please don't litter at the beach. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man shot in an officer-involved shooting downtown last weekend has died from his injuries.Leonardo Hurtado Ibarra, 25, died of his injuries at the hospital on Monday just before 10:30 p.m., SDPD said Tuesday.On Saturday, two officers in the area of 1200 6th Avenue saw Ibarra leaving a building and recognized him from a recent wanted flier regarding a robbery, according to SDPD. Police say the officers attempted to stop and talk with Ibarra but he began to walk away.RELATED: SDPD release surveillance video, body cam footage from officer-involved shooting in Downtown San DiegoPolice say Ibarra dropped the items he was carrying and "reached into his waistband." He drew an object and pointed it at an officer, prompting both officers to fire their service weapons, police added."He produced a handgun and then pointed it at the officers," said SDPD Capt. Rich Freedman over the weekend. "For fear that they were going to be shot, the officers return fire."Ibarra was hit at least once. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery and was placed in the ICU with life-threatening injuries.A loaded revolver wrapped in a bandana was recovered at the scene, but police have not determined if Ibarra fired the weapon at officers.The two officers involved, identified as Jonathon Lucas and Tevar Zaki, were not injured. Both officers have been with SDPD for about four years, according to the department. They have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.RELATED: Calls for San Diego Police reform following downtown shootingBodycam footage was released in Sunday showing the incident from the perspective of the two officers. Footage from a smart street light overhead and a nearby security camera were also released to the public.After SDPD's homicide unit completes its investigation, the case will be reviewed by the county District Attorney's Office to determine if the officers are subject to any criminal liability, according to police.If any policy violations are discovered, the Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation.SDPD says the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers. The Community Review Board on Police Practices will also review the incident and give any recommendations.The Federal Bureau of Investigations and U.S. Attorney's Office will monitor the investigations, police added.San Diego Police could not comment further while the investigation is ongoing. 2507

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's newly renamed Museum of Us will reopen to visitors this week.The museum, formerly called the Museum of Man, will reopen on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. under the state's new guidelines for museums during the coronavirus pandemic.The Museum of Us will operate at 25% capacity when it reopens and all guests will be required to wear a face covering. Other measures to slow the spread of COVID-19 include:Plexiglass is in place at the admission desk to minimize contact.Guests are required to keep 6 feet of distance between other visitors.Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the museum.Guests will be given a personal pencil to use throughout interactive exhibits.Guests will be provided a suggested linear path of travel to promote social distancing.Handrails and other surfaces throughout the museum are frequently sanitized for your safety.The museum is encouraging guests to also purchase their tickets ahead of time online or by using debit or credit cars. Cash will still be accepted if needed. Tickets can be purchased online for general admission or for students with school ID, military with active ID, seniors 62 and older, and youth 6-17. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — SeaWorld's next big attraction is on track to open later this spring.Construction on the park's Tidal Twister roller coaster is set to be completed in May of this year, the park said Wednesday. The roller coaster is being hailed as a first-of-its-kind coaster with a figure-8, horizontal design and dueling trains in which riders sit both backward and forward.Tidal Twister will take riders on a journey as if they're riding the tide, accelerating 30 miles an hour, twisting and banking on a figure-8 track, and crossing an opposite facing train in the middle of the attraction.
