Want to know how old your dog is in human years? A new study states that calculating every dog year isn't equal to 7 human years. That's because your dog ages differently than you.Researchers at the University of California San Diego’s school of medicine said in a news release that a 1-year-old dog is similar to a 30-year-old person. But a 4-year-old pup is identical to a 52-year-old human."The formula is based on the changing patterns of methyl groups in dog and human genomes — how many of these chemical tags and where they’re located — as they age," researchers said in the release. "Since the two species don’t age at the same rate over their lifespans, it turns out it’s not a perfectly linear comparison, as the 1:7 years rule-of-thumb would suggest."This graph formula, which was created from the study, will match up the age of your dog with the comparable human age.Lead researcher Trey Ideker said that dogs that are younger age faster compared to humans.“This makes sense when you think about it — after all, a nine-month-old dog can have puppies, so we already knew that the 1:7 ratio wasn’t an accurate measure of age," Ideker said. For the new study, which was published in the journal Cell Systems, samples of blood from 105 Labrador retrievers were studied.Researchers plan to study other dog breeds to see if their method holds up. 1359
Voters in Colorado have rejected a measure that would have added buffer zones for new oil and gas drilling areas. The passage of Proposition 112 would have banned drilling of wells within 2,500 feet of occupied buildings, water sources and other "vulnerable" areas. But voters rejected it, with 57% of the state's voters saying no.If approved, Colorado's flourishing oil industry would've been dealt a major blow because a chunk of the surging Denver-Julesburg, or DJ, basin in Colorado, would suddenly become off limits. 528
VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Video of a violent arrest by San Diego Sheriff’s Deputies in Vista has renewed calls for better community engagement by local law enforcement.Rev. Shane Harris said that push was galvanized last July after Jonathon Colonel was shot and killed by a Deputy after a foot pursuit. While the Sheriff’s Department said Colonel was a documented gang member, he was not armed at the time of the shooting. His family said he was shot 17 times. The Sheriff’s Department said he had been reaching under his shirt when the deputy opened fire. After that shooting, Harris said the captain of the Sheriff’s station in Vista, Charles Cinnamo, promised to create a community advisory committee.Harris said the group would be composed of various community members who could offer perspective on issues ranging from racial profiling to police brutality.“Conversation lowers tension, automatically,” said Harris.Capt. Cinnamo issued a statement to 10News on the progress of the committee: 998
VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Vista Unified School District is calling on the community to donate their new and used instruments. As they add new music programs, the goal is to get an instrument in the hand of every student. "I really feel music has the ability to save lives and it does," said Eric Weirather, Band Director at Rancho Buena Vista High School.Weirather has been organizing instruments coming in, and a recent donation took his breath away.RELATED: See how music is molded — for free — at El Cajon's Taylor Guitar factory“It was really unreal, like a kid in a candy store!" Weirather said.North Coast Church heard about the instrument drive and asked their worshipers to help, and they delivered.“They filled an entire room. I think they might be up to 1,000 instruments they've donated. Think about all the impact that will have on these kids for years to come.”They've received guitars, drums, flutes, ukuleles, tambourines, saxophones, keyboards and much more. But with a school district of 20,000 students, they are not done collecting yet.A donation drive will be held this Saturday, March 2:Vista Magnet Middle School151 Civic Center Dr, Vista, CA 920848 a.m. till noonIf you cannot attend the drive and live in the Vista, Oceanside area, district officials might be able to pick it up from you. 1318
WASHINGTON (AP) — Contested congressional seats in the nation's suburbs are becoming battlefields, and each party is wielding what it hopes will be a potent weapon. During the pandemic, Democrats are widely returning to the health care theme they used in 2018 to capture House control. In some races, Republicans are promoting the need for law and order after racial justice protests this summer that sometimes turned violent. Even in campaigns where the GOP has chosen a different theme, President Donald Trump's recent focus on law and order can color the debate. Each side has tested its messaging carefully and thinks the other side has chosen a losing issue. 671
