OJAI, Calif. (KGTV) - As many as 700 wild rats, along with dogs, rabbits, a parrot and a cat were found living in an Ojai home at the center of an elder abuse investigation, Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday. Deputies were first alerted to the situation on Mar. 13, when they responded to a “check-the-wellbeing” call initiated by Ventura County Adult Protective Services. APS officials suspected Catherine Vandermaesen of not properly caring for her 96-year-old father, who lived at the home with Vandermaesen and her 74-year-old sister. Deputies who went to the family’s home said the smell of ammonia and urine was detectable 20 feet away from the house. Vandermaesen, they said, refused to let them into the home. A task force of Ojai deputies and detectives said Vandermaesen allowed her father and the animals to remain in conditions not fit for living. Vandermaesen’s father was taken to the hospital and is now under the care of Ventura County Adult Protection Services. Vandermaesen’s sister was also treated at the hospital for unknown reasons and gained temporary housing. Animal Control officials impounded the animals, including 55 rats, but estimated as many as 700 more rats were still loose in the two-bedroom home. Ojai Code Enforcement officials yellow-tagged the residence as a danger to occupants. Vandermaesen was arrested on suspicion of felony elder abuse and misdemeanor failure to care for animals. 1446

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Oceanside's shoreline was closed Tuesday after the sighting of a 9-foot long hammerhead shark. Oceanside Lifeguards temporarily closed the city's beaches from Wisconsin Ave. to Harbor Beach around 11:30 a.m. Police officers were dispatched on a boat offshore to keep an eye out for the shark, according to the city. The shark was last seen swimming about 100 yards offshore, south of the Oceanside Pier. The shoreline was reopened at 2:30 p.m. after a final search of the area came up empty.RELATED: 564

(KGTV) - Parents in one North County school district are reacting to new numbers that show a sharp increase in the number of failing grades during virtual learning.Scotti Taylor has two children attending Mission Vista High: her son, a freshman, and her daughter, a junior. She says since the school year started in early September with virtual learning, both her children have struggled."Both of my kids normally have a 4.0 across the board. Now they're slipping down to low B's," said Taylor.Taylor says her daughter is struggling the most with virtual learning."I do think she's not as engaged. She's really struggling with focus. They don't have the same peer relationships or teacher relationships ... During class, she's mentioned many times that it's difficult to figure out what's going on. Sometimes she can't read the data on the screen," said Taylor.Taylor's children are not alone in their struggles. Vista Unified just released its six-week progress report for all of its high schools. During that time frame, it was all virtual learning.The number of F's that stand as the current class grade total more than 6,000. Last year at the same time, the number was more than 2,000, an increase of more than 200%. The number of students receiving F's in at least half of their classes increased from 3.9% in 2019 to 20.7% this year.In late October, Carlsbad Unified School District released an eight-week progress report and a similar finding, with F grades increasing by more than 300%.Taylor's kids are about to resume in-person learning Monday. If that option gets shut down again, she's worried about how her daughter's distance learning grades will affect her future."100% we are worried about how this is affecting college ... Your trash could make you a target for thieves and some of those items you're trying to recycle may be hazardous.To be safe, start with putting up those new gifts away from any windows in your home. Then, cut up the boxes your gifts came in and put them at the bottom of your trash or recycling bins. This is an easy way to prevent thieves from knowing what you got for the holidays.When it comes to recycling, this is a good time to check out your town or city's recycling rules. Accepted items do vary so depending on where you live, but there are some standard items you should recycle.First, cardboard that's clean and flattened, including shoe and shipping boxes. Wrapping paper can be recycled too, but only if there's no glitter or foil on it. The same thing goes for ribbons and bows. If you want to de-clutter, you can throw in your Christmas cards.Now, as previously mentioned, there are some things recyclers don't want to see. Those items include clothing, cellophane wrapping, or holiday lights. Any packing materials like bubble wrap or packing peanuts should go in the trash.Also, don't forget about the Christmas tree. You can check with your city or even local farms to see if they'll recycle trees to make wood chips for parks, or maybe for animals. You’ll just want to be sure to remove any tinsel, ornament hooks or wire from the tree before handing it over.Lastly, experts say never burn wrapping paper. It can be a fire hazard.The only other potential hazard is in your fridge. Those holiday leftovers will start to go bad Monday. However, you can freeze some leftovers.
