SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are resuming their search Thursday morning for actress Naya Rivera who disappeared while boating on Lake Piru with her young son.The Ventura County Sheriff's Department tweeted that Rivera may have drowned. Later Thursday, authorities began a recovery effort, saying they believed Rivera had drowned. The 33-year-old actress rented a boat at the lake with her 4-year-old son Wednesday afternoon, authorities told media. Staff at the lake found the overdue rental with her child on board but could not find Rivera.Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Cpt. Eric Buschow told the Los Angeles Times that the boy and Rivera got out of the boat for a swim but she did not follow him back onto the boat. The boy was found sleeping on the boat alone by other boaters in the lake, Buschow said.Buschow said Rivera's son is safe with family members.Rivera, from Santa Clarita, earned stardom after her breakthrough role as cheerleader Santana Lopez on the television musical "Glee." According to her biography, Rivera appeared in commercials for retailer Kmart as a baby then broke into acting at the age of four when she starred as Hillary Winston in the television sitcom "The Royal Family."Rivera recently appeared on YouTube Premium’s “Step Up” series.Tragedy struck the former cast of the hit television show twice over the last decade. Former "Glee" star Cory Monteith, 31, was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver, British Columbia, in July 2013. Monteith's death was ruled an accidental drug overdose due to a toxic mix of heroin and alcohol. In January 2018, 35-year-old Mark Salling, known for playing "Puck," was found in a Los Angeles riverbed weeks before he was to be sentenced on charges of possessing child pornography. Salling's death was ruled a suicide.Stay with ABC 10News for updates on this developing story. 1865

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Call them the ghosts of summer vacations past: two mostly empty cruise ships remain anchored off the coast of San Diego, waiting for the green light to resume operations as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.Celebrity’s Millennium and Eclipse cruise ships have been anchored in San Diego since March, when the CDC suspended cruise ship sailings around the country March 14. That order has been extended to at least July 24.Several cruise ship companies have announced voluntary delays until September. After thousands of passengers disembarked from the Eclipse in late March, test results came back showing several passengers were COVID-19 positive.More than a month later, in May, 63 passengers remained quarantined on the Eclipse with hundreds of crew members.A third ship, the Disney Wonder, was anchored in San Diego for the first few months of the pandemic, but departed May 30, said Brianne Page, a public information officer for the Port of San Diego. For now, the Millennium and Eclipse are ghosts of their former selves. All the passengers have now disembarked, along with the vast majority of the crew. Both ships are down to minimal staffing levels of about 80 crew members to maintain the vessels and keep them operational, said Royal Caribbean Cruises spokesman Jonathon Fishman.“As of now, they expect to stay in this position through the summer until our return to service plans are finalized,” Fishman said via email. The ships occasionally pull into port to refuel, but otherwise stay anchored off the coast to avoid port fees that can exceed ,000 a day. When cruise ships pull into port with passengers, companies pay significantly higher fees, ranging from ,000 to ,000 per call, Page said. There were 28 canceled calls due to the pandemic, resulting in roughly million in lost revenue for the Port of San Diego, Page said, plus a staggering ripple effect for the region’s economy. The Port of San Diego estimates that each time a cruise ship visits San Diego as a midpoint in its journey, known in the industry as a “visitation,” the call generates 0,000 in regional economic impact as travelers visit local shops, restaurants and other businesses. Each time a cruise ship starts and ends its journey in San Diego, known as a “homeport,” the regional economic loss is about million, Page said.Using those estimates, the 28 canceled calls resulted in as much as million in regional economic impact.Cruise ships are working with the CDC and other medical professionals to establish safety standards once sailing is allowed to resume, and industry insiders expect the new guidelines may mirror ones recently adopted in Europe.“The European Union has issued guidelines for cruises operating in Europe, which include things like onboard separation by age group, reduced capacity, and COVID testing of all passengers,” said Doug Shupe, a spokesman for the Auto Club of Southern California.Shupe said interest in cruising remains high among Triple-A members, but members are mostly booking cruises for 2021.“We’ve seen that our bookings for 2021, for cruises, are actually higher than what they were this time last year,” he said.He said many cruise lines offered passengers with canceled bookings credits worth up to 125% of their original value. 3313

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Community members rallied Thursday to send a message to developers looking to build in Barrio Logan. This comes after a developer tried to bring an 80-room hotel to the area, but neighbors opposed it.Neighbors are worried the developers coming in would change the culture of the community. "I don't feel good at all. I think in the past, Barrio Logan has been assaulted and insulted," said resident David Heaney. "I'm afraid that they're going to go against the plan again, and there will be some kind of shenanigans where there the City Council will say it's done."Heaney has been living in his Barrio Logan home since 1998. It sits directly across from the proposed development site on Newton Avenue. RELATED: Gallery says gentrification is forcing them out of Barrio LoganProtestors gathered Thursday morning in opposition to the project and future developers who may want to come in. Last summer, a developer wanted to put a hotel at the location, but due to opposition from the community, it will now be a mixed-use space. Community members say there is simply no room for a project like a hotel or other large businesses because of the lack of parking in the area. Neighbors must have parking permits to park in the area. 10News reached out to developer Douglas W. Hamm, who initially proposed putting a hotel in the space. He sent a statement that read, in part: "I conveyed that I have zero interest in trying to build a project in their neighborhood that the community is not supportive of, much less opposes. That was the end of it then and remains the case today." 1602

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bernie Sanders is showing his support for dozens of hotel workers on strike over their pay and benefits. The former presidential candidate stood alongside protestors at The Westin Hotel on Friday. “Nobody wants to do this. We would all like to work right now,” says employee Arturo Ramirez.Ramirez has been working at The Westin Hotel since February. With the high cost of living in San Diego, Ramirez says its sometimes hard to pay the bills.“My mother and I, we work at the same hotel. We’re struggling to pay ,100 in rent," Ramirez says.Bernie Sanders took the stage to show his support to workers during his visit to San Diego.“We’re saying to Marriott who owns Westin, we’re saying to every corporation in this country who make billions of dollars in profit, pay your workers a living wage," Sanders said to a crowd of protesters.Employees are asking for a raise of at least an hour and a chance to save for their retirement.“It’s a billion dollar company that needs to pay the workers a living wage so they can live in the city of San Diego," says Bridgett Browning, President of Unite Here Union. Browning says employee wages at The Westin are lower than competing hotels. Unite Here union says they will go into negotiations with The Westin Hotel on Monday.10News reached out to the hotel, we are still waiting for a response.  1388
