LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - People from all over the world come to La Jolla Cove for its beauty, its water and to get an up-close look at the seals and sea lions living on the rocks. The two eyesores they don't come to see, however, are impossible to miss. "I suddenly turned around and saw these two structures and said, 'whoa! How'd that happen?" said Rich Heleniak, who was visiting the Cove on a recent Friday. Heleniak was referring to cottages called Red Roost and Red Rest. Built in 1894, they are the oldest structures still on their original location in La Jolla. At first glance, it's easy to see they have been crumbling for decades."They've been vandalized over the years, bricks have been thrown, there was an arson fire," said Corey Levitan, a journalist for the La Jolla Light newspaper who has tracked the cottages for years. The cottages were designated historic in 1976, meaning former owner Jack Heimburge could not redevelop them into apartments. Instead, he neglected them until his death in 1998. Heimburge also owned the La Jolla Cove Hotel and Suites next door, so his motivation to ignore them was up for debate. "There was never enough money to take care of the cottages properly," Levitan said. "Then again, this guy owned the hotel, I think there was enough money to take care of the cottages properly."In his will, Heimburge split the ownership of the cottage among his heirs.A multi-year legal battle over what to do with them settled in 2018, clearing a key road block to revamping the cottages. "Take the original structure and rebuild the outside, and they've got carte blanche on the inside to do whatever they want, right?" said Catherine Oborne, a tourist who stopped to see the cottages. The parent company of Cove Properties Inc., which also owns the Cove Hotel and Suites next door, did not return messages seeking comment.The group has retained La Jolla architect Alcorn Benton to design the project. The firm declined to comment, saying the owner is currently reviewing the alternatives and that the schedule is not yet finalized. The cottages were originally called the Neptune Bungalows. A Los Angeles attorney named George Leovy designed them and used one as a vacation home in the 1890s. A banker named Joseph Fishburn owned the other. 2287

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Dencil Gold, a father of three from Las Vegas, has never been into sports, let alone the game of hockey.But this year, all that changed.“It’s like the perfect storm in a perfect community,” Gold said, “and everybody loves it.”He’s describing the hockey fever surrounding the Las Vegas Golden Knights.From the oversized Knights jersey draped over the Statue of Liberty replica outside the ‘New York, New York’ hotel and casino, to the well wishes on the marquees, to the giant-sized chocolate sculpture of star goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, hockey is the talk of the town.The Las Vegas Golden Knights are an NHL expansion team; it’s in its inaugural year, and few expected them to do well. Vegas Sports Book locations had their odds at clinching the Stanley Cup at 500-to-1.That was months ago. Now, they’re just one round away from the finals.“This is really special,” Gold said as he looks out over a packed house on a recent Thursday morning to watch the team practice.But it’s not even about their enormous and almost unrivaled success as a first year team.The Knights' very first home game ever took place just nine days after, and just down the street, from one of the most horrific mass shootings the country has ever seen. The city was in mourning. What this team represents is hope in the face of evil.“We were hurting as a community, and [these team members] were hurting as people,” Gold said. “All of a sudden none of that mattered. We were all in this together.”He can point to the exact moment he became a fan of the Golden Knights. It was during the opening ceremony at that first game, when emotions were still raw. The Knights put together a tribute to the 58 people who lost their lives, and the players, often considered heroes in their own right, escorted the “everyday heroes” of that fateful night, doctors, nurses, and first responders, out onto the ice.“It was a very moving and touching moment,” Gold said. “It was just like ‘Oh my God, this is really special.’”Golden Knights’ defenseman Deryk Engelland then skated to the center of the rink and took the microphone.“To the families and friends of the victims,” Engelland said, “know that we’ll do everything we can to help you and our city heal.”The crowd erupted into cheers before his closing line.“We are Vegas strong,” said Engelland.“The city was just trying to find a way to come together,” said mom of two Melanie Samaniego. “I think it brought something positive into the city in a time of mourning when people were really feeling low and sad and kind of lost.”Samaniego was also watching the Knights practice on this weekday morning, and admitted that, as Gold has done, she too has taken her kids out of school to be at these practices.“This doesn’t happen every day,” she said, smiling. “I’ve never seen this kind of reaction to any team brought into this city.”Her daughter has even started playing hockey, mimicking the moves of the standout goalie.In the locker room after practice, Fleury, asked whether he thinks their success is helping people heal after an unthinkable tragedy, he demurred but said that if their games can help take people’s minds off something horrible even for “a few nights a week” and cheer for their home team, then “we did a little bit of good for the community.”Samaniego, beaming from ear to ear, summed it up with one sentence.“I don’t think anything more positive could have come out of this.”Chris Welch is a national correspondent for The E.W. (KGTV) - New research at UC San Diego has found that breast milk does not spread the Coronavirus."I think it's safe to say that breast milk is safe, that donor milk is safe, and that the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risks," says Dr. Lars Bode, the Director of the UC San Diego Mommy’s Milk Human Milk Research Biorepository, which conducted the study. "We don't have any risks identified at this point."A preliminary research letter, published in August in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found "No replication-competent virus was detectable in any sample."The study analyzed multiple breast milk samples from women who had recently given birth and been infected with SARS-COVID-2, the disease that causes coronavirus. Among 64 samples from 18 different women, they found nothing that could transmit the virus.READ THE REPORTThe Center now has around 400 women enrolled in the study to ensure the results play out over extensive scale testing."Having the information and knowing what the risks are and what you might expect and being prepared for that, it certainly can help reduce anxieties related to having these types of infections," says Dr. Christina Chambers, a pediatrician at UC San Diego.In addition to looking for virus transmission, the researchers are also looking into whether breast milk can transfer antibodies from mother to baby and help the child gain immunity without a vaccine."When mom gets infected, she produces the antibodies," says Dr. Bode. "It's not just in her plasma. It also gets handed over to the milk, and we've seen this for many other diseases as well. There's some act of protection to antibodies and other components in human milk that protect the infant directly."Dr. Bode says they may be able to find a way to synthesize the compounds containing the antibodies so other adults can get their benefit without having to take breast milk away from infants.UC San Diego's MotherToBaby Pregnancy Studies is also running a research project on Coronavirus's effects on pregnant women and babies still in the womb.
