SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ralphs grocery stores are extending their hours to help seniors and provide greater flexibility for the general public, according to Director of Corporate Affairs John Votava.All stores will open at 6 a.m. - 7:30 a.m. for shoppers 60 years and older. "They're the most vulnerable population out there today, so we want to make sure they have time to come into our stores and shop uninhibited," Votava said.Locations will remain open to the public until at least 10 p.m., some will stay open later.Ralphs is also offering free pharmacy delivery for most locations and free pickup service for most grocery orders. Families took advantage of the pickup service Sunday at the Ralphs in Mission Valley. "I think it's going to make people feel comfortable shopping in a different way. If you can order online or call it in for sure," Tim Earp said through a mask.Votava said they're working on other safety features to protect customers and their employees. Plexiglass will be installed next week at checkout counters, and decals are already on the floor to encourage social distancing at checkout.Votava also said employees are allowed to wear masks and gloves while they work.He does have one request for anyone in the store, "if you see a senior who is shopping throughout the day, please let them cut to the front of the line so they can get in and out of the store safely."Votava said this is the new normal for now, and the store hours will reflect that indefinitely. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego and Mountain View community leaders honored the local work of a long-time resident Saturday with an honorary street.Theresa Mae "Mama T" Saunders was a resident and community member in Mountain View, helping with the development of Mountain View Park and its recreation center.In her honor, the city unveiled an honorary street sign above Ocean View Blvd. for Saunders. "Theresa Mae Saunders was a pillar of the Mountain View community," Councilmember Georgette Gómez said. "This honorary street name is one way we can commemorate her life of service to this community and to the City of San Diego."Saunders raised six children while also taking part in local volunteer work, feeding the homeless, and hosting garage sales to benefit those in need.  801

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police announced Thursday the arrest of a mother accused of driving her SUV the wrong way in Rancho Bernardo, causing a head-on crash that injured her children and an innocent driver.Mayra Gonzalez, 29, was drunk when she drove her Chevy Suburban east in the westbound lanes of Camino del Norte west of Interstate 15 Monday morning, police said.The Suburban hit a Jeep Liberty, seriously injuring the 57-year-old man in the Jeep.Gonzalez’ three children were in the car at the time of the crash. Her 8-year-old and 2-year-old daughters had minor injuries but her 9-month-old daughter, who was unrestrained, suffered life-threatening injuries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Wednesday that the San Diego Padres will oversee the creation of an all-new, mixed-use district outside of Petco Park.Moving forward with plans to revitalize the neighborhood adjacent to the downtown ballpark, Faulconer announced the winning proposal to transform the space in the East Village known as Tailgate Park into the East Village Quarter -- a project consisting of retail, housing, open space, parking, and more, with the Padres as a partner.The area is bordered by 12th and Imperial avenues and K and 14th streets. The City of San Diego has owned the four blocks since the ballpark district was developed.Last December, the city formalized its intent to sell or lease the space, and on Wednesday, Faulconer said the Padres came up with the best proposal to revitalize the area.The city also held a virtual open house to get public input on the top two proposals and the community’s priorities for the development.Padres President Erik Gruepner said they want the space to embody the “live, work, play” vision of the East Village, so much of which is already influenced by the team’s presence.Gruepner spoke about holding neighborhood festivals and farmers markets to help create a feeling of community, turning a parking lot into a neighborhood.When it comes to parking, the Padres plan to add 600 more spaces than what currently exists in a multi-level structure.The cost for the project is expected to exceed billion.The proposal will go to the City Council for a review and vote, and if approved, the goal is to have a final plan in place by next year. 1637

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the city's Get It Done mobile app has led to thousands of tons of trash being removed.In the app's first three years, more than 7,000 tons of trash, debris, and waste has been removed from public spaces around the city.The city broke that number up into:Illegal dumping/litter removal - 4,440 tons of wasteEncampment debris cleanup - 2,528 tons of wasteThe app was made available in 2017 to encourage residents to report trash and other concerns in their neighborhoods. Since then, city crews have responded to more than 6,500 reports and conducted more than 32,000 proactive cleanups.The average response time has also shrunk from 25 days in 2017 to five days in 2020, the city says.Council members have also been able to use the data received from the app to identify hot spots in their districts.The app is part of the city's "Clean SD" program. The program was born out of a need to clean unsanitary areas in the public, including homeless encampments, according to the city. Since 2017, the city has sanitized and power washed 18,000 city blocks, or about 1,800 miles of sidewalk."Clean SD is all about restoring a sense of pride in our communities and making sure our neighborhoods are clean and safe for everyone. Our cleanup crews have accomplished that and so much more," Faulconer said this week from the site of a frequent illegal dumping site in Paradise Hills. "This has truly been a citywide push to beautify our neighborhoods and we encourage San Diegans to keep using the ‘Get It Done’ app to report issues that we need to address in their community." 1631
