BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Tuesday called for more efforts to optimize land use in order to save resources and further economic restructuring.     Li made the remarks during an inspection to the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR). As the most populous country in the world, China has been faced with shortages of land, water, energy and minerals, and the shortages were worsened by rapid economic growth, he said. BARCELONA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The top Chinese negotiator for the United Nations climate change talks being held here said Tuesday that the Kyoto Protocol must be followed.     "China's position is quite clear: the Kyoto Protocol must be adhered to, since it best illustrates the principal of 'common but differentiated' responsibilities," said Su Wei, head of the Chinese delegation to the talks.     Su told Xinhua that during earlier negotiations, some countries had proposed discarding the Kyoto Protocol and adopting a totally new document at December's Copenhagen climate change meeting.     "This demand is strongly rejected by the Group of 77 and China, and other developing countries," Su said.     Su stressed that the Kyoto Protocol must be the legal basis for further negotiations at Copenhagen, and developed countries must fulfill their obligations under the protocol, which regulates that they should clarify their reduction targets in the second phase of the protocol.     "If this basic arrangement is changed, the future of the Copenhagen meeting would be greatly shadowed," Su said.     The deal to be reached at the Copenhagen conference, Su said, should have two basic elements.     One element is to set the mid-term emission reduction targets for developed countries under the Kyoto Protocol. That is, developed countries as a whole should commit to making 25-40 percent cuts below 1990 levels by 2020.     The second element is to make substantial arrangements for the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in accordance with the Bali Roadmap.     "We hope we could lay a good foundation for the Copenhagen conference through negotiations at this meeting," Su said.

SINGAPORE, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chief of General Staff of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) Chen Bingde called on Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and military officials on Friday.     During his meeting with Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Teo Chee Hean, Chen said that China and Singapore share common strategic interests in economic development and regional security. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao is to meet his U.S. counterpart President Barack Obama Tuesday morning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.     The summit meeting is scheduled to be held at 10:40 a.m. after a grand welcoming ceremony. The two leaders will meet the press after the talks.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, will meet President Obama Tuesday afternoon.     President Obama will also visit the Palace Museum, or the Forbidden City, and attend a state banquet in his honor hosted by President Hu.

TAICHUNG, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Letting in more mainland investors again hit the agenda in Taiwan as negotiators from two sides discussed mainland investment with local business people Wednesday.     At the symposium, Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), suggested Taiwan should not be "afraid" of competitors. When the mainland began to open up, the enterprises and industries also worried that they would be beaten by overseas competitors, but 30 years after, they not only survived but also became stronger, Chen said. "The restrictions will prevent mainland companies from enjoying fair competition."     She cited the complicated procedure that mainland businessmen had to undergo to travel to Taiwan.     "We have invested in an IT firm in Taiwan. Research work requires cooperation between staff on both sides and they have to travel a lot across the Strait. When there is an emergency, our mainland staff always could not go to Taiwan promptly," she said. "In a world of tough competition, we should not sacrifice efficiency."     Many mainland companies are interested in real estate development, finance and telecommunication that are still not on the list.     Long Ge, vice president of Shanghai Xiandai Architectural Design Group, just finished a business tour in Taiwan.     "We hope to set up an office in Taiwan in near future," Long said.     His company hoped to launch real estate businesses, not only design but also construction and marketing, in Taiwan. "But we cannot if the restrictions remain there," he said.
