SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Only recently identified through DNA testing, Marine Sgt. Millard Odom was laid to rest Tuesday at Miramar National Cemetery.Tuesday was the 75th anniversary of Odom's being killed in action during World War II in the battle for the Pacific Island of Tarawa.Sgt. Odom had been buried in Hawaii for 69 years with no name on his marker.  Now his loved ones are able to pay tribute.His niece, Pollyanna Brown, spoke at the service."Even after 75 years our family is one of the lucky ones that have the privilege and honor to bury our lost loved one," said Brown.Several other veterans, including the Patriot Guard Riders, attended the service. 687

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two Carlsbad grocery store workers have tested positive for coronavirus, after the county reported COVID-19 cases among restaurant workers and another grocery employee.Sprouts confirmed two employees from the company's store at 2618 El Camino Real have tested positive. The two cases include:One team member who was last in the store on March 15One team member who was last in the store on March 17Sprouts said team members who may have come into contact with an infected colleague have been notified and asked to self-quarantine. The store also conducted "extensive cleaning and sanitizing" to reduce the risk of spreading the virus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With schools temporarily closed because of the coronavirus, a Carlsbad librarian is providing the comfort of a library to students one driveway at a time.Calavera Hills Elementary librarian Lindsay Rudy started drive-by storytimes Wednesday, but has already found her schedule filing up with requests."I'm definitely surprised," Rudy said. Soon, others also signaled their interest."It brought me back to feeling like I was right there with them at the school," Rudy said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – With just hours until Election Day, several local law enforcement agencies are already on high-alert in the event that large demonstrations arise."We are comfortable with the staffing level we have for [Tuesday] and into the weekend,” SDPD Lieutenant Shawn Takeuchi told ABC10 News on Monday and added, “We're monitoring social media and any information available to the public about any groups that are planning to protest or celebrate.” He said San Diego Police Department is well prepared for any potential unrest although officers have no credible knowledge of plans for it. On Tuesday, SDPD will open its Department Operations Center (DOC) which is only activated during major events as a hub to filter and disseminate intelligence. “We are not fully staffing the DOC. We are putting it on a monitoring status [and] we feel that's prudent given the climate that we're in,” he added.“I think anxieties are very high all over the country,” San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore told ABC10 News on Monday. He said that his Department will be adequately staffed. “We fully respect everyone's right to peacefully demonstrate [and] to express their first amendment rights. However, when those peaceful demonstrations cross that line into criminal activity, deputy sheriffs and local law enforcement will be ready to act to keep everybody in the crowd safe so that they can express their legitimate first amendment rights,” he added.On Monday, California Highway Patrol told ABC10 News that its officers are being moved to 12 hour shifts. A statement reads, “The protection of state of California properties, including state buildings and state highways, is the primary responsibility and jurisdiction of the CHP. As a statewide law enforcement agency, the CHP has officers available to respond to any incident or a request for assistance by an allied agency through the mutual aid process anywhere in California. As for the days leading up to election day, if a community member receives threats or intimidation intended to affect their vote, they are encouraged to give us a call. Threats of this nature will be investigated and be shared with the FBI who has been working on such issues nationwide.”The La Mesa Police Department states, “The La Mesa Police Department would like to assure the public that we are committed to the goal of facilitating a safe, peaceful and legal Election Day tomorrow. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Where the 5 freeway meets the Coronado Bridge, under the loud noise of cars sits a historic gem, a staple of Barrio Logan, Chicano Park. "It's always growing, new murals, new activities."Vibrant murals, familiar sounds and a sense of community is often what you find and feel. "I think people feel that energy and see those colors and images of faces that are familiar to them." For 50 years, Chicano Park has united people of all backgrounds including hispanics, african-americans, latinos, and chicanos, in particular. "We like to clarify that we're more than that. Yes, we have spanish heritage but we also have native american and indigenous heritage," said Beatrice Zamora-Aguilar. Aguilar is an author, teacher and member of Chicano Park's steering committee. Her first visit to the park was in the late 1970's. "That was an eye-opening and exciting event, to see so many aspects of my culture in one place. Music, dance, speakers, mural art, paintings, and low riders. It was so many different parts of my culture all in one place being embraced in one celebration." Since then, she's become a part of the park's roots."It's a place we come together sometimes to take action on various issues through the community." But little do people know she said, Chicano Park almost didn't exist. "The story goes Mario Solis is walking through the neighborhood and sees these big construction equipment." She said Solis alerted everyone he could, and together they created a human chain to stop the city from building what would've been a highway patrol substation. This was after thousands of chicanos in the neighborhood were already displaced after zoning changes and factories were built. "They occupied land for 12 days and then started to talk with city officials about fulfilling their promise to build a park for the community." That story lives on through those who were there and now in a children's book by Aguilar. "Children need to understand places and landmarks they take for granted didn't just happen, it took people coming together who really cared about creating something for the children and future." The book titled 'The Spirit of Chicano Park'."Many of those elders have passed on now and I believe they leave a little bit of their energy and love in that park and that's what you feel." 2336
