Don’t expect BLM and social justice messages on basketball courts or jerseys in the NBA next season, according to league Commissioner Adam Silver. The 2020 NBA season has gotten a lot of attention for both the league’s response to the coronavirus pandemic with a “bubble” and their public embrace of social justice issues and the Black Lives Matter movement this summer.During a NBA Countdown interview on ESPN ahead of a playoff game earlier this week, Silver was asked about the league championing social justice and civil rights, but as Silver noted in a press conference recently, that has not been universally popular.“How committed are you to being that going forward?” host Rachel Nichols asked.Silver quickly responded, “We’re completely committed to standing for social justice and racial equality. It’s part of the DNA of this league.”He then said changes could come in how that commitment is manifested. The commissioner acknowledged the league has to sit down with the players and discuss for next season.“I would say in terms of the messages you see on the court on our jerseys, this was an extraordinary moment in time, when we began the discussions with the players and what we all lived through this summer,” Silver said.In July, when the league restarted their 2020 season from a so-called bubble in Orlando, “Black Lives Matter” was painted on the court floor. Players, coaches and staff stayed in Orlando this summer and drastically limited contact with the outside world and other people, in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Also this season, players were allowed to put slogans or phrases on their jerseys to highlight causes they support. The league was also the first large sports group to protest playing games in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Instead, many teams and other leagues spent time focused on social justice issues.Blake is a black man who is now recovering at a rehabilitation center after being shot several times in the back by a police officer. So, what can fans expect in the 2021 season?“My sense is there will be some sort of return to normalcy. That those messages will largely be left to be delivered off the floor. And I understand those people who are saying ‘I’m on your side, but I want to watch a basketball game,’” Silver said.As for when the next season will start, Silver says everyone with the league needs a rest, mentally and physically, and they don’t have an exact start date at this time. They said it could be as early as Christmastime, but will likely be in 2021. 2572

EL CAJON (CNS) - A 21-year-old man accused of leading Border Patrol agents on a high-speed pursuit that ended with a crash on Interstate 8 in Boulevard, killing three of the suspected undocumented immigrants riding in the pickup and injuring seven others, was charged today with murder and other counts.Arraignment for Luis Alberto Virgen, a U.S. citizen who lives in Tijuana, was postponed until Dec. 18 so he can hire an attorney. He was charged with three counts each of second-degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter, along with seven counts of reckless driving causing injury.Virgen, who is being held on million bail, faces up to 45 years to life in prison.Virgen allegedly sped off when federal officers tried to pull over the passenger-packed white Chevrolet Silverado he was driving near the Mexican border in eastern San Diego County shortly before 4:30 p.m. last Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.RELATED: Truck fleeing Border Patrol crashes in Boulevard; 3 killedWith the agents giving chase, Virgen entered Interstate 8 at Buckman Springs Road and fled to the east briefly before exiting at Ribbonwood Road and re-entering the freeway, this time headed west, the Border Patrol reported. After fleeing for several more miles, the suspect ran over a tire- flattening spike strip that agents had laid across the roadway in his path east of Crestwood Road, according to the federal agency.About a minute later, the Silverado -- occupied by a single passenger in the front and the rest unrestrained in the cargo bed -- veered off the interstate, went up a dirt embankment, became airborne, overturned and rolled back down the sloping roadside onto the freeway.Virgen was the only one in the truck wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and the others were ejected, CHP public-affairs Officer Travis Garrow said. Two of the male passengers and the sole female member of the group died at the scene of the crash. The names of the deceased were withheld pending family notification. Paramedics took Virgen and the surviving passengers to a hospital for treatment of moderate to serious injuries, Garrow said.About an hour after the fatal accident, Border Patrol personnel in the area came across another vehicle believed to have been involved in the apparent human-smuggling attempt and arrested a second man. The suspect's name was not released. 2393

Eight-time MLB All-Star pitcher Roy Halladay died on Tuesday at the age of 40 in a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the coast of Pasco County, Florida, law enforcement officials confirmed. The crash occurred early Tuesday afternoon. Officials originally said that a plane with a tail number matching Halladay's private aircraft had gone down in the Gulf of Mexico. Halladay was the only person on the two-seater plane that crashed just off Holiday, on Florida's Gulf coast north of the Tampa Bay area, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said.Halladay was twice named as a Cy Young Award winner. He won the award in 2003 as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, and won the award again in 2010 as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. Halladay retired at the end of the 2013 season after compiling a career 203-105 record in the MLB. "We are numb over the very tragic news about Roy Halladay's untimely death," the Phillies said in a statement. "There are no words that describe the sadness that the entire Phillies family is feeling over the loss of one of the most respected human beings to ever play the game." 1166
