SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Candidates, who are looking to unseat Congressman Duncan Hunter, are feeling emboldened as his trial grows near. This week, the Congressman’s wife took a plea deal with prosecutors, in which she has agreed to testify against her husband in the trial scheduled for Sept. 16. Several candidates had already made plans to run in 2020 against before prosecutors flipped his wife, and they are now watching to see what unfolds in court. Many of the candidates have begun fundraising efforts, and some say donations to their campaign have ramped up in the past few days. Many currently vying for the District 50 seat are Republicans within Hunter’s party, like El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells who ran against Hunter in 2018. “I think my chances are now even better, I lot of people know me more,” Wells said. “A lot of people, they wanted to vote for me last time but felt conflicted about the Duncan Hunter situation.” Temecula council member Matt Rahn, who is also eyeing Hunter’s seat, expects to gain some of his followers as the trial goes on. “I expect to see some change in the folks that are showing interest as we see this case evolve and unfold but right now, we have a solid base,” Rahn said. A conviction won’t remove Hunter from office. It will take a two-thirds House vote to do that. However, if he survives the trial, there's likely going to be some political fallout. That gives Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar confidence he can turn the district blue. “I think people are going to be willing to put country over party and look past the 'D' next to my name. No one has invested more in the running of this race to represent everybody, than our campaign,” Campa-Najjar said. 10News reached out to Republican Larry Wilske. He has not responded to our request for comment. 1806

It’s a victory for religious freedom sparked by a Philadelphia teen who loves the game of basketball.Mastery Charter sophomore Nasihah Thompson-King has been playing basketball since seventh-grade. She loves the game but was shocked that she was asked to remove her traditional Muslim hijab headgear during a playoff game back in February.“It was our second playoff game against Palumbo and when it was time for me to get in the game a referee told me I couldn’t play with my hijab on. I had to take it off if I wanted to play, so I decided just not to play,” said Thompson-King.At the time, the referee was enforcing a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association rule requiring athletes to get prior approval for any head garment for religious or medical reasons. But Thompson-King had never had a problem wearing her hijab before.“I just didn’t wanna take it off because of my religion,” she said. The incident sparked outrage over the constitutionality of the policy and calls for PIAA rule changes. That’s when Pennsylvania state Sen. Shariff Street got involved.“We’re asking you to change your rule books to accommodate First Amendment rights to freedom of religion and freedom of expression,” Street said. This week, the PIAA did change its policy, now stating that religious headwear is permitted without prior approval.“I was excited when I was told the news and I was happy for myself and anybody else who wears a hijab when they play basketball so they won’t have any questioning about the hijab,” said Thompson-King.“I’m absolutely proud of my Nasihah, that’s my only daughter and I’m so proud of her, of what she’s done and playing basketball and also taking a stand,” said Nasihah’s mother, Fatima Thompson.“I have two more years of basketball to play and I’m looking forward to seeing more females and males wearing their religious head covering,” said Nasihah. 1894

Sorry to rain on your beach barbecue: There is a 70% chance of tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico over Memorial Day weekend and an even better chance of soaking rains across the eastern Gulf Coast.Hurricane season doesn't begin until June 1, but that doesn't mean we won't see some action Saturday or Sunday.Forecast models have not been in agreement on where the expected storm will go, but they have agreed that it will form. It is now a small cluster of thunderstorms near Belize. Over the next 48 hours, the atmosphere is not favorable for development, but conditions look more favorable as we move into the weekend. The National Hurricane Center says there is a 70% chance that a subtropical or tropical depression could form in the Gulf of Mexico. The American forecast model has been very wishy-washy on the location. Most of its runs have shown the storm moving across the Florida peninsula. The European model has been a little more consistent, showing a tropical or subtropical storm drifting ashore near New Orleans. No matter where this storm moves or how strong it becomes, it will continue to bring tropical moisture into the South from Louisiana to North Carolina. The heaviest rain will fall near the Gulf, with Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama seeing seven-day rainfall totals of 4 to 7 inches. If it gets strong enough to become a subtropical or tropical storm, with sustained winds of 39 miles per hour (63 kilometers per hour) or greater, it will be named Alberto. As we have seen in years past, environmental conditions sometimes allow for development before the hurricane season begins. The last time a tropical cyclone was named Alberto was in 2012; it also formed before the season began, on May 19. It became a tropical storm that meandered off the cast coast of Georgia and South Carolina.Just last year, we had a named storm -- Tropical Storm Arlene -- east of Bermuda in April. This early development doesn't necessarily mean we are in for a busy hurricane season. The official National Hurricane Center forecast released Thursday will be a better indication. Some forecasters have suggested a slightly above-average year. 2191
