As more businesses open up, along with schools and colleges, there are still some hurdles many people need to get over when it comes to fears associated with COVID-19.Fox 17 spoke with Psychologist Dr. Lyndsay Volpe-Bertram from Spectrum Health about these fears."I don't think six or seven months ago any of us thought we'd be still in this current state," Dr. Volpe-Bertram explained, adding that the differences in the way people are handling the precautions is adding another layer of stress. "I think that range of reaction and behavior is also contributing to our overall stress because everybody is kind of taking a different approach to it."To address a balance, Dr. Volpe-Bertram recommends what's called "Ongoing Calculated Risk Assessment", similar to what many call risk vs. reward."We are looking at it as, 'Is this worth it to me?' Is what I'm going to get as a benefit back from having this experience or putting myself out there in some way, is that worth the possible exposure?", asked Dr. Volpe-Bertram.Essentially she recommends we be efficient and choosy in everything we do, even in socializing or explaining."Rather than saying, 'We have to say yes to everything'. Help us identify what are the most important events for us to be attending? Who are the most important people that we want to spend our time with?"Dr. Volpe-Bertram reminds, as the weather turns and flu season fast approaches, not to stress about it, but instead prepare for more mental well-being."It's important for us to start thinking about what our coping strategies are going to be in the Winter and how are we going to keep ourselves busy. Because we don't want people to stay holed-up in their houses, fearful of going out to places. Automakers are racing to develop driverless cars, putting increasingly complex technology on the road despite concerns from safety experts and the National Transportation Safety Board about a lack of regulations.Unlike rules for the design of a seatbelt or airbag, the federal guidelines for automated vehicle systems are voluntary. The U.S. Department of Transportation says keeping rules at a minimum will speed up the introduction of life-saving technology, a goal made all the more urgent as traffic deaths climbed again last year to 37,461, with 94 percent of those caused by human error.That lack of mandatory rules for self-driving cars has given automakers and technology companies the green light to police themselves, said Jackie Gillan, president of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. The group is calling for the government to issue mandatory safety standards for driverless cars.“Before we introduce this technology we need to have some assurance and accountability by the industry that this technology is not going to kill or injure consumers,” Gillan said.The National Transportation Safety Board makes recommendations after investigating major transportation incidents. The board recently called on DOT to issue new safety rules after its investigation of a May 2016 fatal crash of a Tesla Model S operating on autopilot near Williston, Fla. The Tesla slammed into a tractor-trailer, its cameras and automatic emergency braking system failing to spot the blank side of the truck against the white sky.It was the first known deadly wreck of a car driving with that level of automated sophistication. The NTSB said the driver relied too heavily on the car’s traffic-aware cruise control system and autosteering feature, but also blamed Tesla’s autopilot for allowing the driver to not interact with the car for prolonged periods of time.Investigators found the driver had his hands on the wheel for only 25 seconds during the 37 minutes the car was on autopilot. After the crash, Tesla updated its software that requires drivers touch the wheel every so often when the car is driving itself to ensure a human is paying attention to the road. Now if a driver repeatedly fails to touch the wheel, he or she will “strike out” and cause the car to slow down and stop in its lane with its hazard lights on, disabling autopilot for the remainder of the trip. 2378

BALTIMORE — A 79-year-old New York woman lost thousands of dollars after she fell for the "grandparent scam."Earlier this week, the woman received a call from someone posing as her granddaughter. The woman on the phone said, "Grandma, I need help," then handed the phone to someone claiming to be her lawyer.Susan Mayorga's mother thought it was her eldest granddaughter on the phone and agreed to hear the man out."He said, you need to send me ,000 immediately in cash, wrapped in a magazine, here's the address, send it overnight early delivery UPS, and everything will be cleared up," said Mayorga.Mayorga's mom went straight to the bank, then to UPS where she mailed ,000 in cash to 208 South Loudon Avenue, a vacant home in Baltimore. The next day, she received another call.“[He said], 'Oh, I didn't realize there's a gun involved and gunpowder went off, so it's more than a misdemeanor, we need another ,000,'” said Mayorga.Her mom only had ,000 left, and sent it. But before it got there, Mayorga's mom discovered her granddaughter was fine. She immediately told her children and they got to work calling UPS.“I immediately got the tracking number, I called UPS, and spoke to a supervisor and told them it's a scam, there's cash in the envelope this cannot be delivered. It's a scam, please hold the envelope and have it sent back,” Mayorga said.UPS tracking history shows they received a request to place the order on hold, but it was still delivered.“Someone was outside waiting for it and signed his name at 7 a.m. and took the package and left,” Mayorga said.Last year, 1 in 5 people lost money to impostor schemes like the grandparent scam. The total loss amounted to 8 million, according to the Federal Trade Commission. And scammers get away with it because they know people will do anything for the ones they love.“It's just sad because she doesn't have a lot of money and she’s like, I would do anything, give my last penny for my grandchildren, so it's just extra sad,” said Mayorga.Mayorga’s mother called the scammer and he answered. He said he received the package but wanted to know why she tried to hold it up. When she said she knew it was a scam, he threatened her then hung up.UPS said they're investigating what happened to the package. 2315

As teachers report to work this week at Georgia’s largest school district, the Gwinnett County Public Schools, 260 of them tested positive or reported exposure to the coronavirus, according to multiple reports.Officials told CNN that most of the cases were likely through community spread. "As of last Thursday, we had approximately 260 employees who had been excluded from work due to a positive case or contact with a case," GCPS spokeswoman Sloan Roach told CNN. "This number is fluid as we continue to have new reports and others who are returning to work," she added.The district plans to reopen August 12 after shutting down in March. Nearly 160,000 students attend classes in Gwinnett County.The area saw a rise in coronavirus cases in July, according to public health data. The state of Georgia has averaged over 3,000 new coronavirus cases per day in the month of July."Given the number of COVID cases in Gwinnett we would expect to see positives among our employees based on the community spread in our county," Roach told CNN. 1045

You've got Machado, Tatis, ya know?"But the uptick in attendance hasn't helped all business equally. There are still multiple shuttered storefronts near Petco Park, including the site of what used to be Tilted Kilt on 10th Avenue. Alina Ahmed, who owns Cafe de L'Opera, across from Petco Park, said high rents hurt. Plus, she pointed to issues with the area's homeless population that can keep customers away.
