Colleges and universities are looking ahead to the spring semester as the pandemic continues.Schools like Georgetown University, Smith College, Princeton University and the University of Florida (UF) are either inviting undergrads to live on campus starting in January, or are bringing back more students for face-to-face learning.Princeton and UF are among the universities that will test students and staff regularly.UF already has students living on campus and has more than 14,000 undergrads registered to take in-person classes in the spring.“We feel it's important to move the campus back to normalcy to the extent possible. Because in the end, a university is really a community of people, living and working and researching together. And we feel it is important to bring people back and reestablish that sense of community,” said Joe Glover, Sr. VP of Academic Affairs at UF.While having 14,000 undergrads on campus sounds like a large number, that’s less than half of the 36,000 undergrads who are enrolled at the university located in Gainesville. The campus has reduced class sizes and is already near capacity of what they can handle, while being socially distanced.Before the pandemic, many states required college students to have the bacterial meningitis vaccine if they want to live on campus. That still stands, but now there is a possibility universities could have a similar requirement for the COVID-19 vaccine.“Until it moves from emergency use to a more normal, permanent approval, that will probably remain in the realm of possibility or theoretical possibility,” said Glover.Ultimately, it is up to states to decide whether this should be a requirement. CLEVELAND, Ohio - A local Tuskegee Airman who served in World War II was honored and celebrated in a special way on Thursday.Asa Newman who was part of the Tuskegee Airmen— the first African American unit to fly combat airplanes in World War II—recently turned 102 years old.To celebrate this American hero, community members lined the street as law enforcement honked their horns and a crowd waved across the street to Newman.The Aurora Post of the American Legion was there to honor Newman who was surrounded by family and friends.Newman grew up in Cleveland and attended East Cleveland High School. After World War II, he moved to Chicago and attended college at Roosevelt University. He was one of seven children, with three brothers and three sisters. College enrollment is dropping sharply among high school seniors.A new report finds the number of students who immediately went on to college this year fell by nearly 22% on average.Breaking that down by area, under-served communities have been hit hardest, nearly a 30% drop for low-income high schools and 33% for high poverty high schools.The National College Attainment Network funded the research. They tell us students lost access to support networks when schools went virtual.And then, many students in communities hit hardest by COVID-19 didn't have a choice other than to get a job and support their families.“They get used to that. Their families get used to that. Their families need that from them, and it makes the idea of thinking about college later in life after high school graduation all the more impossible,” said Kim Cook, Executive Director at the National College Attainment Network.The group's biggest message is to stay engaged.It's not too late to apply for federal student aid, like the Pell Grant or subsidized student loans.There are online resources through the U.S. Department of Education and platforms like the Common App that offer chat options to answer questions.Even just a couple classes at a community college will help keep you on track. You can also reach out to institutions you previously applied to but felt like you couldn't go to. Talk to the financial aid office about how your circumstances have changed.“This is all about making it an open conversation and reaching out to those supports and telling them you'd like to enroll and asking them to help you make that happen and what kind of options you have now,” said Cook.The data suggests that declining college enrollment will not only continue, but possibly get worse next fall.This time of year, current seniors should be focusing on keeping grades up and writing essays for applications. 1897

Customers of Comcast’s Xfinity internet service in many states may find that they will be charged if they use a lot of internet at home.The news comes as many Americans are working, schooling and using the internet to watch TV programs through the internet.Comcast will begin limiting many customers to 1.2 terabytes of internet data per month before charging overages. Beginning in December, Comcast says it will begin offering an unlimited plan for customers who plan to use that much data. For most customers who rent a gateway from Comcast, an unlimited plan would cost an additional a month, while most other customers would pay an additional a month. Comcast will implement the plans for customers in the states of CT, DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, parts of NC, NY, parts of OH, PA, VA, VT, WV, and the District of Columbia.The cap will not apply to the Gigabit Pro tier of service or business internet customers.For those who use more than 1.2 terabytes of data per month, Comcast will charge for every 50 gigabytes of additional data. The overages will be capped at 0 per month.Comcast says it will notify customers when they're nearing their data limit, and will send those notifications at 75%, 90% and 100% usage.Comcast says only 5% of its customers exceed 1.2 terabytes of data per month. Before the pandemic, Comcast suspended caps on internet usage as more Americans began using the internet for work and school.Those who stream TV might be most likely to go over the cap. According to Netflix, one hour of video can use up to 7 gigabytes of data. Someone who streams six hours a day without using any additional internet could use up an entire month’s worth of data. However, Comcast refutes those estimates and says that 1.2 terabytes cover as many as 500 hours of streaming video. (KGTV) - The forward rate of spread of the Dehesa Fire burning in East County has been stopped, Cal Fire tweeted just after 5 p.m. The flames broke out about 3 p.m. east of Dehesa and Sloane Canyon Roads near Sycuan Casino, Cal Fire officials told 10News. Sky10 video indicated the flames were on a ridge above the Sweetwater River and Beaver Hollow.By 8 p.m. the fire had burned 200 acres and was 10 percent contained, Cal Fire reported. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office tweeted evacuations were underway for a "handful of structures" at Sycuan Truck Trail and Japatul Road. Employees of the nearby Dehesa School District offices were told to go home. By 8 p.m., all evacuations were lifted. Fire danger was increased due to dry weather Tuesday.
