MANILA, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A reception was held in Manila Monday evening to mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines.Present at the reception, hosted by the Chinese embassy, were Philippine Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, diplomats, Filipinos with Chinese origin and representatives of Chinese enterprises investing in the country.Addressing the reception, Chinese ambassador to the Philippines Liu Jianchao said that over the past 35 years, constructive and productive meetings on a regular basis between top leaders of the two countries have been indispensable in advancing bilateral ties with sustaining strength."I strongly believe," he said, "The essence of China- Philippines should be rooted in our peoples, in the studies we share, the business we do, the knowledge we gain, and even the sports we play.""Our purpose has always been making friends and partners with the Philippines and all the other countries in the region, fostering an amicable, stable and prosperous neighborhood, and building cooperation for mutual benefit and win-win progress," he added."As we are expecting the Philippine top leadership to be proclaimed, we know that China-Philippines relations are facing a new historical opportunity. The common interests between China and the Philippines are large, so is the scope of China-Philippines cooperation. The Chinese side looks forward to working with the incoming Philippine administration to ensure that China- Philippines strategic and cooperative relationship gets off to a good start and continues to forge ahead," he said.Philippine Foreign Secretary Romulo said that the theme for this year's anniversary is "Philippines plus China, more than friends". This theme highlights three distinct features of bilateral relationship: the deep ties of friendship between the two peoples; the multifaceted and expanding bilateral relations; and the role of youth in this relationship."We are proud that many prominent Filipinos are of Chinese ancestry. Foremost among them, of course, is our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, our first woman President Corazon C. Aquino, and our first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruiz," he said.Aside from these prominent Filipinos, members of the Chinese- Filipino community have made and continue to make significant contributions to Philippine society, he added.China and the Philippines established diplomatic relations on June 9, 1975.
BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- China's chief in the fight against corruption, He Guoqiang, Friday urged authorities to tap into the people to "form a joint effort to combat corruption and build clean governance.""Fighting corruption and building clean governance is a life-and-death issue for the Party and the state, which calls for concerted efforts of the whole of society and the people," said He, head of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, at a meeting in Beijing. He, also a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, said the discipline inspection and supervision authorities should set up more channels to hear public opinions and recommendations on fighting corruption and building clean governance."We should create a better environment to engage the people in fighting corruption and building clean governance," he said.He also called on the authorities to be more willing to subject themselves to public supervision and to be more approachable, trustworthy and respected.
BRASILIA, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev Thursday in Brasilia to discuss bilateral ties and other important issues of common concern. It was the first meeting between the two leaders since they met on the sidelines of the Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Singapore last November.Hu and Medvedev were meeting on the sidelines of a summit of BRIC nations, namely Brazil, Russia, India and China. At the BRIC summit slated for Thursday, leaders of China, Brazil, Russia and India will discuss the global economy and financial situation, reform of the international financial system, climate change and cooperation among the four countries. Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) meets with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Brasilia, Brazil, April 15, 2010. In recent years, China and Russia have strengthened their strategic cooperative partnership with enhanced mutual political trust, and fruitful cooperation in all sectors. The countries also have had close interaction and coordination in dealing with international and regional affairs.Last year witnessed the celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Russia, as well as the hosting of the "Year of Russian language" in China, which brought about new breakthroughs in the Sino-Russian strategic partnership of cooperation.Despite some impact on bilateral trade by the global economic crisis, the quality of bilateral economic cooperation between China and Russia has improved, with trade structure optimized and significant progress achieved in energy sector cooperation."Relationship with Russia is one of the priorities of China's diplomacy. The two countries have enjoyed mutual support on issues that concern each other's core interests," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said at a press conference on March 7.Last year, the two countries signed a series of important cooperation agreements covering oil, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy and high-speed rail, said Yang, adding that the relevant cooperation projects are now well underway."We expect the China-Russia oil pipeline project to be completed by the end of this year and the pipeline will enter into operation next year. Moreover, the two countries are also committed to promoting cooperation between China's northeast region and Russia's Far East and eastern Siberia region," the minister said.
BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States wound up the two-day 2nd China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) Tuesday, achieving consensus and even forging agreements in a number of areas of crucial significance for both sides as well as regional stability. It is obviously of the utmost importance the two sides tread the path of dialogue to build cooperation and mutual benefit, given the complicated but important nature of the bilateral relations.HIGH-LEVEL DIALOGUELeaders have acknowledged the vitality of the dialogue mechanism consisting of two tracks: economic and strategic, which was initiated last year by President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama.Hu said when with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner that he hoped the S&ED would play a greater role in boosting bilateral relations. U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo (L to R) attend a press conference of the second round of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogues in Beijing May 25, 2010"I hope the four special representatives and both teams will seriously implement the achievements, draw on their experiences, and strengthen the building of the mechanism so it can play a greater role," Hu said, referring to the leaders and ministers chairing the dialogue. Both Clinton and Geithner were special representatives of President Obama. They were joined by Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and State Councilor Dai Bingguo, both special representatives of President Hu.They achieved consensus on bilateral relations, facilitating global economic recovery, anti-protectionism in international trade, pushing forward financial reforms and important international affairs. The two dialogue partners also signed agreements covering trade, environment, energy and disease control at or on the sidelines of the S&ED, underscoring the value of the dialogue platform."The two teams worked hard to realize the vision" between Obama and Hu and that the two sides deepened cooperation in the second round of talks with the largest-ever delegation, Clinton said.Clinton told Hu when they met she appreciated the "substantial speech" he made at the opening session of the dialogues.President Obama once even drew on traditional Chinese wisdom of Mencius, a master of the Confucius school of teaching that has helped shape Chinese society, to illustrate the value of the high-level dialogue platform."A trail through the mountains, if used, becomes a path in a short time, but, if unused, becomes blocked by grass in an equally short time," Obama said at the opening of the 1st S&ED last year, quoting Mencius to compare the bilateral exchanges to blazing a path through the mountains.
