SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The woman accused of killing another driver in a wrong-way crash while drunk on a San Diego freeway last year changed her plea Friday.Lauren Ashley Freeman pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury in the Feb. 26, 2018 collision that killed 35-year-old Justin Callahan.Freeman's plea dismisses a murder charge. She is scheduled to be sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in prison at a September hearing.RELATED: CHP reverses blame in fatal wrong-way crash on I-5 rampInitially, Callahan was deemed responsible for the crash. The position of his Volkswagen Jetta after the crash led CHP officers to believe he was at fault. But California Highway Patrol investigators reversed their findings after Callahan's family refuted the claim and the case was re-opened. Freeman was charged with causing the fatal crash in November.Callahan was driving to his Ocean Beach home from work in Chula Vista when the crash occurred on a transition ramp from northbound Interstate 5 and westbound I-8 just before 2 a.m.The 35-year-old died at the scene, while Freeman and a passenger in her Toyota Camry sustained major injuries. Soon, it will finally reopen for all to enjoy.Opened in 1926, the San Diego Museum of Art is the city's oldest and largest museum.Following a four-month pandemic shutdown, the museum is finally ready to continue educating locals, starting July 9."Every single protocol has been put in place there is a big team here working the last three months and thinking precisely how to give you the joy of the art the pleasure of being at the museum but more importantly the fact that you can feel safe here," said Roxana Velasquez, the museum's executive director.Safety precautions will be in line with temperature checks and social distancing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The White House announced Tuesday that it would start cracking down on what the President calls the "California Homeless Takeover." The administration's plans include destroying tents on the street and relocating the homeless population to government facilities. Some local homeless advocates said the plan lacks details and direction. Underneath arguably some of the most expensive condos in San Diego is a place people go to live, rent-free."I think it gives people the opportunity to stabilize and get ready for the next step in their life," Alpha Project Chief Operating Officer Amy Gonyeau said. "Address the issues that are causing them to become homeless."The Alpha Project's Bridge Shelter helps keep 325 people from sleeping on the streets every night. Still, there are nearly 8,000 others in San Diego County without a home. In Los Angeles County, there are 50,000 homeless. The numbers were so astounding, President Trump vowed to intercede. He plans to take down tents on the streets and place the homeless into government-backed facilities."We just can't play Whack-A-Mole and move people from the sidewalk to jail, to tents, to a government facility," independent homeless advocate Michael McConnell said. McConnell said he believes the President's plan is far too vague. "Whether it's a shared housing model, whether short-term or long-term rental assistance, whether it is actually building a brick and mortar supportive housing for some folks, it takes all of these interventions," McConnell said. Gonyeau says representatives from Los Angeles have visited more than a dozen times to study their Bridge Shelter and their seventeen wrap-around services."They want to replicate this model," Gonyeau said. "I know they are going to do that in LA, and some other cities as well."It has become a temporary relief that has helped hundreds of people cycle out of homelessness. But McConnell says this is not enough."I would redirect a lot of the money that we are currently spending on Band-Aids," McConnell said. "I would redirect that into rental assistance in housing dollars so that we can start nibbling away at this deficit."At the end of the day, both McConnell and Gonyeau say California needs more housing, not just affordable housing, but low-income housing. If the President's plan has that as an end goal, both say they are on board."We have a very large unsheltered homeless population in California, and we have an incredible affordable housing crisis here. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thirty years ago, Officer Brian Hardy had an idea. Hardy told his chief, "Chief, I have this crazy idea. Let's put teddy bears in a police car and bring them up to Children's Hospital. I think the kids would really get a kick out of it."Hardy was just a few years into being a member of the Coronado Police Department. He got the idea when, during a visit to Rady Children's Hospital, he noticed the toy collection bin."I asked the nurse at the station there why are there so few toys and she said donations are way down this year. We don't have a lot of toys for the kids in the hospital," said Hardy.Hardy bought the first twelve bears himself. Then, the teddy bear drive started to spread to other law enforcement departments across the county.They have collected as many as 75,000 teddy bears and a huge caravan delivers bears to Rady Children's Hospital every December.Hardy said he'll never forget the impact bringing a little joy to one terminally ill child had on his fellow officers."This little girl was maybe 4, 5 years old and all those cops walked out of there crying their eyes out," said Hardy.A few years later, Hardy found himself on the other side of things when a doctor at Rady told him his 2-year-old daughter's appendix had burst."He said my daughter's very sick she may not make it till morning, but he says, 'We're going to do our best to save her life,'" said Hardy.They did and it happened to be the morning of the teddy bear caravan.Hardy remembered, "It was like an episode of the 'Twilight Zone.' Things were turned around and I was in the hospital and the cops were coming with teddy bears."Hardy has received many thank you notes over the years, but it's what one girl told him a few years ago that has stayed with him."She comes running up full clip and she says, 'You gave me a teddy bear when I was 5 years old,'" Hardy said. He said the young woman now in her 20s told him, "I never forgot that." Now, because of the pandemic, instead of collecting piles of bears, they are encouraging people to donate money to buy bears that go directly to the kids.Officer Hardy is retired now, but still involved and has this message for the many generous donors."If you could see what we see, these children just light up when you bring them these bears," he said.
