SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Italian restaurant in Encinitas agreed to pay ,800 to settle a pregnancy discrimination lawsuit filed by a former employee who alleged her hours were substantially cut, and she was ultimately fired, after she told her employer she was expecting, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced Tuesday.After informing the owner in 2015 that she was expecting, the server was told that she "should stay home since she was pregnant, that her pregnancy had caused coverage problems, and that (the owner) would offer a position with less pay for more work so that she would not come back from her pregnancy leave," according to the complaint filed against Maurizio Trattoria Italiana LLC.She was fired in the summer of 2015, while less experienced servers were hired, according to the complaint.RELATED: Lawsuit aims to stop California's AB 5 from taking effect"Women should not be penalized for having children," said Christopher Green, director of the EEOC's San Diego office. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A United Airlines flight scheduled to take off from San Diego International Airport was diverted from the runway just before departure Friday due to an undisclosed mechanical issue with one of the plane's engines.Flight 478 was scheduled to take off for Denver shortly before noon, but was recalled while on the airport's taxiway. The plane was safely escorted back to the airport's terminal and the issue occurred at low speed, according to United.``The aircraft safely returned to the gate and customers deplaned normally,'' a United spokesperson said in a statement. ``We are making arrangements to get our customers to their final destination as soon as possible.''Roughly 120 passengers were aboard the flight. United and San Diego International did not disclose the plane's model, and information on a future flight to Denver was not immediately available. 888

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A young man who groped and sexually assaulted four female students as they walked to their off-campus housing near San Diego State University last summer was sentenced today to a two-year prison term.Judge Polly Shamoon also ordered Minda Shewangizaw, 20, to stay away from the four victims and San Diego State for 10 years.Shewangizaw pleaded guilty in April to felony and misdemeanor charges of false imprisonment and sexual battery. The defendant still faces charges that he tried to rape a woman in May 2017 at UC Riverside, where he was a student.Deputy District Attorney Judy Taschner said the victims in the SDSU case ranged from 17 to 19 years old. "He (Shewangizaw) attacked two separate groups of girls that were walking in pairs," the prosecutor said outside court."And even though they were walking with a friend, it didn't deter him from literally walking up to them and sexually assaulting them and grabbing them against their will."T.H. testified during a preliminary hearing in January that she and her roommate, T.L., were walking near Montezuma Road and 55th Street, back to their apartment just after midnight last Aug. 29 when the defendant came up from behind and forcefully "grabbed my butt."T.L. testified that she noticed someone walking behind them before he began chasing them. "I said, You need to leave," T.L. testified. "He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward him. He pulled my shirt down and grabbed my breast."T.L. said she kicked the defendant and was able to break free. She and her roommate notified a security guard, who called campus police.The witness said Shewangizaw was wearing an "extremely distinctive" blue Hawaiian shirt and she and her roommate were able to identify him a short time later, after his arrest following another attack.Jane Doe 2 testified that she and Jane Doe 1 were on a pedestrian bridge near the Aztec Student Union, headed back to their dorm about 1 a.m., when she heard footsteps and was smacked on her "behind" by the defendant."I was livid. I said, What are you doing? Don't do that! He laughed it off." The witness said she kept walking and tried to ignore the defendant, but he followed and made a remark about her breasts before pulling her shirt down and putting his hands on her chest.Jane Doe 2 said Shewangizaw went to Jane Doe 1 and said, "How about you? What do you have?" Jane Doe 1 testified that Shewangizaw asked them if they were freshman and told them he was a junior at SDSU. The witness said she froze when the defendant grabbed her friend's breasts."I got really freaked out." She said Shewangizaw grabbed her breasts and buttocks and trapped her against a rail before laughing and walking away. Shewangizaw was arrested and bailed out of custody, but was re- arrested in connection with the alleged attempted rape at UC Riverside. 2844

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who was a 17-year-old gang member when he killed a San Diego police officer in 1978 has been granted parole, but District Attorney Summer Stephan said today that she is hopeful Gov. Gavin Newsom will reverse the decision. Jesus Cecena, 59, was convicted of killing Officer Archie Buggs, 30, who was shot four times after he stopped a car driven by Cecena in the Skyline neighborhood.Cecena fired five times at Buggs, then paused, walked toward the fallen officer and fired a final bullet into his head at point-blank range. The officer died in the street, his hand still on his service revolver.Cecena was granted parole Wednesday during a video-conferenced hearing at Valley State Prison in Chowchilla. He was previously granted parole in 2014, 2015 and 2017, but each time the decisions were reversed.Cecena's latest parole hearing -- his 18th -- included a discussion of his criminal record, psychiatric factors, parole plans, and statements by representatives of the victim's family.``We are deeply disappointed that the killer of one of San Diego's finest officers was granted parole,'' Stephan said. ``This crime impacted the entire San Diego community and caused great pain for the family of Officer Archie Buggs.`` This fallen officer was so respected by the law enforcement community that a substation was named after him,'' she said. ``We are hopeful that Governor Newsom will review this parole grant and reverse it once again to keep this killer incarcerated.''In 1979, Cecena was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, but the sentence was reduced to a seven-year-to-life term in 1982 due to him being underage at the time of the shooting. 1708

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities today publicly identified a young man who was fatally shot last week during a fight near Horton Plaza.Patrol officers responding to reports of gunfire found Angel Maravilla, 22, mortally wounded at E Street and Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp District shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego police.Medics took Maravilla to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.``The initial investigation revealed the victim and a companion were involved in an altercation with a third man,'' Lt. Matt Dobbs said. ``At some point during the altercation, the (third man) pulled a firearm and shot the victim.''The reason for the fight was unclear. Based on witness accounts and video footage from several businesses, homicide detectives identified the suspected shooter as 27-year-old Reuben David Velazquez, who was arrested Sunday and booked on suspicion of murder, Dobbs said. 917
