CALIPATRIA, Calif. (KGTV) — Six prison guards were injured during an attack by an inmate this week, leading to the use of deadly force.Calipatria State Prison inmate Douglas Compton refused to leave an "out-of-bounds" area in the prison's yard on Thursday after three officers ordered him to do so, according to the state's Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR).Compton then stabbed one of the officers in the head and face, CDCR says. Responding officers used batons, pepper spray, and other use-of-force options to try and subdue Compton.During the struggle, Compton punched another two officers.An officer in an observation tower discharged one lethal round from a rifle to stop the attack. No one was injured by the use of lethal force, CDCR says.Six officers were injured and taken to an outside hospital for treatment and released.Compton was injured and treated, before being transferred to another prison.CDCR added that two inmate-made weapons were recovered at the scene. CDCR investigators are investigating the weapons as well as the use of deadly force.Compton was sentenced to 112 years to life in prison following a 2013 conviction of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter with the use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon with the use of an altered ID. 1315

Carlsbad (KGTV): Voters in Carlsbad could put women in charge of the local government, as female candidates overwhelmingly outnumber male candidates in the races for Mayor and City Council.Right now, there is just one woman on the five-seat council, which includes the Mayor. The lone female, Cori Schumacher, is currently running for mayor against incumbent Matt Hall.Meanwhile, Council-members Mark Packard and Michael Schumacher are not seeking reelection.Six candidates have come forward to fill their spots, five of which are women. In District One, Linda Breen, Tracy Carmichael, Barbara Hamilton, and David McGee are running. In District Three, Priya Bhat-Patel is facing Corrine Busta.Depending on the outcomes of those elections, women could hold 3 of the five City Council seats. And, even if Schumacher loses, she'll still keep her current position on the Council."I think it's about time," says Loann Simon from the League of Women Voters in North County.Simon believes the rise of the women's movement in the last few years has spurred more women to come forward and get more involved in local politics."Women are becoming braver," she says. "I think it’s something that’s evolving, but after 2016, it’s kind of flipped a switch." A "pink wave" would be rare in Carlsbad. According to the Coast News, only 11 women have been elected to the City Council in the last 66 years.Simon says more female candidates means more of a focus on women's issues, like family, health and open space."It brings their voice to the table. Some people in the city told 10News they’re happy the President is paying attention to their community while others say they don’t support him and wish he’d stay away. A plaque now hangs from a new section of the border fence proclaiming it to be the first section of Trump’s border wall. CARLSBAD, Calif., (KGTV) -- Nearly 200 active duty mothers and mothers who support active duty staff at Camp Pendleton, got a full day of pampering at the 12th Annual Military Mother's Day Brunch. 10News spoke to the Torres family. "Right now, Daddy's deployed," mother, Sonia Torres said. While her husband defends the country as Sgt. Major of Batallion 1-4, she defends the homefront as she cares for her two children, Jasmine and Al."My mom means the world to me. She does everything for me. Cook, kisses me good night, everything," 11-year-old Al said.With no family nearby, military mothers like Torres are in a unique parenting situation. They play the roles of both mom and dad. "Since Daddy left, we needed something to fill that void, and we found Tae Kwon Do. We [Al] went from white belt to yellow belt to orange belt, Friday night." Torres said proudly.They often witness milestones alone. Jasmine celebrated her 13th birthday yesterday. "My mom is well, there's no words to describe it. She's always there for me. I couldn't really ask more than that," Jasmine said. So they don't. The Torres children will spend the rest of their lives being Mama's Girl and Mama's Boy."When I'm in university or college, I would be really close to her because she's my number one fan," Al said.
