In an effort to limit COVID-19 exposure and new transmissions, authorities in China are ordering food importers to avoid frozen food “from areas with severe epidemics.”The country’s Foreign Trade Operations Office released a statement Monday citing cluster infections that continue to occur from frozen food items that test positive for the coronavirus. The statement does not list specific countries, and asks companies to stay up-to-date on “key epidemic areas.”In August, a city in China warned food importers that a “surface sample of frozen chicken wings” from Brazil tested positive for the coronavirus.In June, Chinese authorities said they found heavy traces of coronavirus in meat and seafood areas of a large wholesale food market in Beijing, after an outbreak of new cases.Earlier this month, China said it would suspend imports from companies overseas if their frozen foods test positive for coronavirus. Media outlets report China has already taken steps to ban imports from some meat processing plants.Their release on Monday puts responsibility on food importers in China to “establish and improve the early warning and reporting mechanism for preventing the import” of the coronavirus.The CDC and the World Health Organization say the chances of catching the coronavirus from food is low.“Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that handling food or consuming food is associated with COVID-19,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states on their website.However, they continue by stating it is possible a person could touch a surface that has the virus on it and then touch their mouth or nose, potentially spreading the virus.The CDC recommends safe food practices like washing hands after touching food packaging and food products, and cooking meat thoroughly. 1802

In a fleeting moment, life can change dramatically. Two summers ago, Fred Quin was celebrating the 4th of July at his family’s lake cottage near Grand Rapids, Michigan. They loaded up the boat and headed to the sand bar.“I decided to go off the front of the boat, and that’s when it gets fuzzy,” Quin siad.Quin's girlfriend, Meghan Anderson, noticed Fred was acting strangely. She walked over to him and grabbed his shoulder.  He didn’t move.The group grabbed a raft, put it under Fred, called 911 and floated him to shore.  They were met by an ambulance.Within four hours, Fred was in surgery.  He'd shattered his C-6 vertebrae, causing his body to become motionless. "The surgery was to remove those pieces, put a donor bone in, put a plate in the front side, and on the back side put two rods going down my spine. And they fused my C-5 to C-7 vertebras," Quin said.The trauma doctor told Fred he would never walk again, and he would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.“It was devastating,” Anderson said.Quin wasn't giving up on his hope to walk someday, so he spent every day in therapy. With Anderson always by his side and after months of rehab, there was a sign of progress. Eventually, he began to regain feeling in his leg.“My first moment was my big toe on my left foot,” Quin said.Quin moved back home and started intense workouts at Detroit Medical Center's Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM).“Fred’s determination is what makes you make it enjoyable to come to work,” RIM Physical Therapist Kyle Weishaupt said.They have been putting Fred in a wearable motorized machine that helps increase strength and endurance during workouts.“With the robot, the Exoskeleton, and me, we can get him up, and we can do over 1,000 steps in one session,” Weishaupt said.As the steps progressed, so did Quin and Anderson’s relationship. On their eight-year dating anniversary, they returned to the water for a pontoon ride, and Quin proposed.“The next goal is to walk down the aisle with Meghan with just with one crutch,” he said.On May 12, Meghan became Fred’s bride, and he accomplished his biggest goal.He walked down the aisle on his wedding day — fulfilling his dream and sharing his special day with family and friends. “Whether it’s exactly how we wanted it to happen or not, that’s not what matters. It's that we’re doing it together, and we’re happy," Meghan Quin said. After the honeymoon, the Quins plan on getting back to their life and setting new goals for their future. In a critical situation where minutes determine life or death, you may think emergency medical services offer your best chance of survival. However, a Johns Hopkins trauma surgeon doesn't think that's always the case.“If it were me, and I know a lot about trauma, drive me to the trauma center as fast as you can,” said Dr. Elliott Haut, associate professor of surgery and emergency medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and senior author of a new study that evaluates emergency transport for shooting and stabbing victims.Haut and colleagues examined data from trauma centers within the 100 most populous U.S. metro areas and compared ambulance versus private vehicle transportation and the relationship between transport-mode and in-hospital mortality. He was not surprised by what he saw.“Patients who are injured with penetrating trauma — so stab wounds and gunshot wounds, in urban settings, so these are in the City — have improved outcomes and improved mortality if they're brought to the trauma center by private vehicle compared to emergency medical services, EMS,” Haut said.The keyword is trauma center; not all hospitals are equipped to handle walk-in patients with these kinds of injuries. And they are injuries that require immediate surgery. The study does not cover cardiac arrest where the most important thing is CPR and a defibrillator.“When we control for all those things, the rapid transport of patients by private vehicle makes a big difference,” Haut said.According to the study, 62 percent of patients are less likely to die when transported by private vehicle compared to EMS.Dr. Gabe Kelen has seen many of these walk-in patients at the Johns Hopkins Hospital emergency department.“You're waiting, waiting, waiting, the ambulance people get there, they do certain things, very skilled, it's all being done out there. Then they load you up, drive through traffic, they get here, that can take twice as long. It sometimes really is better to get you here, let us start doing our more definitive thing that we can do only in the emergency department,” said Kelen, director of the emergency department.He agrees time is of the essence, but also cautions that this is one study.“If you get multiple people being dropped off at one of the smaller hospitals, they may not have the staff to do everything that a place like ours can do so let the system work,” Kelen said.The current standard of care in Maryland is to wait for EMS to arrive. Dr. Richard Alcorta, acting co-executive director of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System (MIEMSS), does not support changing the standard.He says not everyone knows where a trauma center is located and EMS can perform certain life-saving procedures that may be crucial before transport. A spokeswoman with the Baltimore Police Department said they do not have a position on the study’s findings and that “preservation of life is paramount." Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have released more people seeking asylum in the United States from custody, citing a shortage in space.The release comes as thousands of people fleeing violence in Central America as part of a migrant caravan are beginning to arrive in Tijuana, hoping to enter the U.S. and claim asylum here.Earlier this year, federal officials released several hundred families to relatives, church groups or other organizations due to statutory limitations on how long people can be held in custody."These people, they don't speak English they don't have any money, and they are in another country and they don't have a cell phone to call their relatives," said Magdalena Shwartz, who works with churches and ICE to help find places to stay until relatives can pick up those the government releases.For families detained by immigration authorities, under a settlement agreement and subsequent decision, unaccompanied children or families can only be held in custody for 20 days before being released while their cases work their way through immigration courts.Pastors at a church in Mesa said they recently received a call from ICE asking if the church could help at least one hundred people, who were dropped off Tuesday. Others were given a bus ticket and dropped off at a bus station in Phoenix."They don't have another option," Shwartz said.
