OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A 16-year-old girl told Oceanside Police a man, possibly homeless, tried to kidnap her Thursday morning as she walked to El Camino High School. The girl was walking east on Mesa Drive near Vanilla Way at 7:20 a.m. and passed the man heading the opposite direction. After she walked by, the man turned and grabbed her in a bear hug, police said. The man struggled with the girl, who was able to break free when he fell to the ground, according to investigators. The girl arrived at school and notified security about the incident. Oceanside Police units and a drone were deployed to find the man but were not successful. The girl described the man as dirty or "possibly homeless" according to police, white, in his 50s, 5’9 inches tall, and very thin. He was wearing a tan pullover sweatshirt with a zipper and baggy black jeans. Police said the man may be bald on top of his head with short light brown hair on the sides. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — The Oceanside Unified School District voted Thursday to return students to an all-online learning format to prevent any coronavirus outbreaks, as cases surge throughout the state.Starting Monday, all elementary schools in the district will move to distance learning."With the recent rapid rise of COVID-19 cases, and our commitment to keep staff at home who are feeling sick, we’ve experienced a direct impact on staffing," an email from the district read late Thursday. "As a result of compounding staff shortages, we are unable to provide the amount of substitutes needed to effectively run our schools and classrooms. Additionally, we are not permitted under public health guidance to reopen our secondary campuses while we are in the most restrictive purple tier.The district said in addition to the move for elementary schools, it will delay the secondary return to in-person classes until San Diego County returns to the "red tier" of California's reopening guidelines.Secondary learning centers will continue to support students and the district's elementary enrichment program will serve students pending staffing. The district's free curbside meals program will also still be offered to all district students during virtual learning.The district's winter break will go on as planned from Dec. 21, through Jan. 8, 2021.No changes were announced regarding the scheduled return to in-person class for middle and high school students in January. 1485

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A man died Thursday in an Oceanside home after a fistfight with a relative, police said.Officers were called to the home in the 600 block of Arthur Ave. at 7:17 a.m. because of an argument between two men in the front yard. When police arrived, they found Nestor Jurado, 37, not breathing. Jurado was pronounced dead at the scene."It appears he died as a result of the injuries he sustained during the fight," Lt. Kedrick Sadler said. Police arrested 35-year-old Joel Cardona and booked him into the Vista Detention Facility on a murder charge.Sadler said the reason for the fight is unknown and no weapons were found at the scene. Jurado's sister told 10News Cardona is their mother's cousin. 763

OCEANSIDE (CNS) - A fight between two men at a North County convenience store escalated Friday into a stabbing that left one of them hospitalized and the other under arrest, police said.The 9:30 a.m. fracas happened at the ampm [sic] minimart in the 1500 block of Melrose Drive, Oceanside police Lt. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Outside the Star Theatre in Oceanside is a recently completed mural designed exclusively for the space and ushering in a wave of public art. "We want to create a place where people can feel welcome," said Gumaro Escarcega with Main Street Oceanside, the group that started the project called "Art that Excites."Their goal is to fund 10 new murals at places all over downtown Oceanside.
