The door was closed, and his Life Alert was in the other room on the charger. His phone was in the bathroom with him, but just out of reach on the counter.Lucky for Williams, Fluffy was in the room too. And whether or not he knew it, he’d been training Fluffy for this moment accidentally.“So I said ‘ring-a-ding Fluffy, you’re my only hope,’” Williams said, tearing up. “And he was. It wasn’t even five minutes later I felt something hit my hand. And I’m here because of it.”The cat had brought Williams his phone and he was able to dial 911.“I relive it a million times. What if he wouldn’t have been in there with me? I’d be dead today,” he added.Now Williams, who served with the U.S. Army in Korea, is fine – left only with some soreness and bumps and bruising. The American Automobile Association (AAA) expects at least 34 million less people will travel this holiday season than last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.Public health concerns and travel guidance are influencing decisions not to travel during a time when people often take vacations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is urging Americans not to go anywhere for the holidays this year, warning that it could increase your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19.Still, AAA projects as many as 84.5 million Americans may travel from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3, a decline of at least 29%.As for methods of travel, AAA says most Americans who do go somewhere in the next few weeks will do so by car, with road trips accounting for 96% of holiday travel. Up to 81 million Americans will travel by car, a decline of at least 25% compared to last year, according to AAA.As has been the trend this year, far less people will fly this holiday season. AAA says as many as 2.9 million travelers are expected to book flights for the holidays, a decline of nearly 60% from 2019.For those who do choose to travel despite the risks, it’s important to take steps that can help keep yourself and others safe.AAA says to plan ahead by checking with state and local officials along your route and at your destination to learn about local guidance and any restrictions in place. That includes what’s expected of you when you return home. Many places require COVID-19 testing prior to and after travel.The CDC recommends taking a COVID-19 test one to three days before travel and another three to five days after travel, in addition to reducing nonessential activities for seven days after traveling.When packing, make sure you include face masks, disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer and a thermometer. Surveys suggest a growing number of Americans are willing to get a COVID-19 vaccine, however the latest numbers from Gallup in mid-November show only 58 percent of those surveyed would get the vaccine.A former lawmaker is among those suggesting giving people a stimulus check in exchange for getting a COVID-19 vaccine.During an interview with CNBC, former Maryland Representative John Delaney suggested giving ,500 for getting immunized.“The faster we get 75 percent of this country vaccinated, the faster we end Covid and the sooner everything returns to normal,” Delaney said in an interview with CNBC.com.Survey data shows a growing political divide about whether or not to take the vaccine, and Delaney told CNBC.com there has to be an incentive for “people to really accelerate their thinking about taking the vaccine.”Delaney pointed out that while his plan would not force anyone to get vaccinated, there are already measures in the U.S. to encourage vaccination, including for children to attend school.While his proposal seems enticing, it faces some big hurdles.Sending people ,500 checks in exchange for vaccination could cost upward of 0 billion.
