BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- CNC World, the English-language channel of Xinhua News Agency's TV arm, CNC, will reach cable television audiences in Africa from Jan. 1, 2011, according to an agreement signed Friday between CNC and South Africa-based MIH Group.The English-language channel of China Xinhua News Network Corporation (CNC) will be available to 4 million African families through MIH's cable network.Xinhua President Li Congjun met Koos Bekker, founder of MIH, before the signing of the agreement. Both sides expressed their hope CNC will be a competitive and influential international media organization.On Thursday, Xinhua signed an agreement with Eutelsat Communications to extend the coverage of CNC to all of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa from Jan. 1, 2011, through Eutelsat Communications' Eurobird, Hotbird and W7 satellites.CNC World broadcasts English news programs 24 hours a day and covers breaking news and major political, economic and cultural news from around the world.Launched in 2009, CNC has developed into a television network with satellite services in the Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe and Africa.It is also expanding its cable television and new media services and provides news programs to about 300 domestic and overseas television organizations.

TAIPEI, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Procedures of cross-Strait talks had become more "simplified" and the results "more tangible" after five talks over the last two-and-half years, said chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) Friday in Taipei.Chiang Pin-kung told a press conference that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan were expected to sign a medical and health cooperation agreement at the upcoming talks between the SEF and the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), scheduled Tuesday.Regarding a cross-Strait investment protection agreement, he said the two sides had "reached a preliminary consensus" on it, but still needed time to further exchange views since it was "complicated" and "concerned a wide range of issues."The investment protection agreement is an important part of the follow-up negotiations after the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) took effect in September.Chiang said the SEF and the ARATS would "continue to discuss" it in order to reach a deal as soon as possible, as "it is related to people's interests."The talks will be the sixth round since the two organizations, authorized by the mainland and Taiwan to handle cross-Strait affairs, resumed negotiations in June 2008 after an 11-year suspension.About 560 reporters, including more than 400 from Taiwan, 60 from the mainland, as well as those from Hong Kong, Macao and foreign countries, will cover the event.Chiang said a mainland delegation, led by the ARATS executive vice president Zheng Lizhong, was scheduled to arrive in Taipei on Sunday and would hold a preparatory negotiation with SEF vice chairman and secretary general Kao Koong-lian, to decide the agenda of the talks.ARATS president Chen Yunlin and his wife are expected to arrive in Taipei Monday morning. The two sides are scheduled to hold talks on Tuesday morning and sign the medical and health cooperation agreement in the afternoon.Chen and his wife will also visit Taipei's National Palace Museum and the Taipei International Flora Expo, before leaving Wednesday noon.Chiang said next year would mark the 20th anniversary of the SEF's establishment. GUANGZHOU, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- China will increasingly promote the use of clean energy, since the country's energy needs are expected to increase by an equivalent of 2 billion tonnes of coal in the next decade, said Dai Yande, an official of the National Development and Reform Commission Tuesday during the 2010 Asia Energy Forum in Guangzhou City."China will use the lever of price to increase the demand for new energy," Dai said, "We will increase the share of non-fossil fuels in energy consumption to 15 percent by 2020.""We will increase the installed capacity of nuclear power to 80 million kilowatts and hydroelectric power to 400 million kilowatts by the end of 2020," Dai added.Further, China's major export hub Guangdong Province will invest 10 billion yuan (1.5 billion U. BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's government-run welfare lottery has raised a total of 164.5 billion yuan (24.8 billion U.S. dollars) for public welfare funds over the last 23 years, the Welfare Lottery Distribution and Management Center (WLDMC) announced Monday.Total sales of welfare lottery tickets had amounted to 500 billion yuan (75.2 billion U.S. dollars) since the lottery started operation in 1987, said a statement issued by the WLDMC.Half of the funds were allocated to social welfare projects organized by local governments, and the rest to public welfare funds or projects administered by central authorities, including the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA), said the statement.The civil affair authorities for the past 23 years had supported more than 200,000 projects for the public good, the statement said.The projects included social welfare institutions, child welfare associations, homes for the aged in villages and towns, and community service centers.The WLDMC is administered by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, which was authorized by the State Council to raise welfare funds through lottery sales in 1987.
