SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An ash-filled stolen trailer in Miramar contained heartbreak for more than 100 military families in the form of hand-carved model aircraft burned and damaged. Many of the coveted items are simply too far gone from the damages."They are hand-carved, hand-painted and personalized," said John Pineda, who owns Squadron Toys.He says his model aircraft are ordered by service members and veterans - and their loved ones to commemorate service. Many of them are gifts for a retirement or Christmas.Those gifts disappeared overnight, in minutes."We are heartbroken," said Pineda. He showed 10News the surveillance video.Just past 1 a.m. on Nov. 3, a U-Haul truck drives into the parking lot. Five minutes later, you can see it again, this time hauling Pineda's trailer, filled with more than a hundred model aircraft to be shipped out the next morning.The discovery of his trailer missing was followed a week later by a call from the CHP.The trailer was found on fire on a street in Vista. He towed it back Thursday.Pineda looked in the trailer and found about 60 of the models were missing. There were also burned model planes and helicopters. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After releasing a new study showing the link between free, unstructured play and increased brain development, doctors may now start prescribing playtime for young children.The study, titled "The Power of Play" by the American Academy of Pediatrics, says free, unstructured play, "is brain building, a central part of healthy child development, a key to executive function skills, and a buffer against the negative impacts of stress. Furthermore, play builds the bond between parent and child."The study blames an increase in strict scheduling, more screen time and parents' safety concerns as reasons why play time has dropped by as much as 25% over the last 30 years.The AAP is now advising its member-pediatricians to prescribe playtime to kids when they come in for wellness exams and check-ups."The benefits of play cannot really be overstated in terms of mitigating stress, improving academic skills and helping to build the safe, stable and nurturing relationships that buffer against toxic stress and build social-emotional resilience," says Michael Yogman, MD, FAAP, lead author of the AAP report.Local child development experts in San Diego agree, saying free play gives kids life-long skills."That's exactly what children need, especially in pre-school," says Andrea Wilson, the Manager at Rady Children's Hospital's Alexa's Playful Learning Academy for Young Children."That's the opportunity for them to turn-take, build empathy, use their communication skills, learn to be team players."Wilson's school emphasizes unstructured play in its classes. She says parents need to take part at home too, by giving kids choices when they play and letting them lead the way."Tell them, 'You can play with this toy, you can play with that toy,' and see what they want to do from there," says Wilson. "Also ask a lot of open-ended questions and learn with them as well."According to the study, screen-time is one of the biggest reasons kids aren't free-playing anymore. Wilson says it's easy to give kids an alternative, even when they're away from home."Having a bag of books, crayons and manipulative toys is always a better option than putting a screen in front of them," she says.As for how much free play kids need, the study doesn't give a specific set limit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A University City woman is searching desperately for what she says is worthless to a thief, but priceless to her.Cassie Moua's wedding outfit, which her grandmother made for her over 15 years, was stolen out of the trunk of her husband's car the week after her wedding. "It's been sitting in a closet for 15 years, waiting for the day I get married," Cassie said. "I get married and a week later, it's gone."Cassie married David Lawrence on Feb. 29 at her father's house in Scripps Ranch. She wore a traditional Hmong wedding outfit, including a black jacket with embroidery, a black apron with embroidery, and a white skirt with a pink belt. That dress, however, is now in the hands of a thief. Sometime during the night of Friday, March 6, a thief got into David's car, stealing the suitcase from the trunk with the wedding outfit inside. Cassie says there were no signs of forcible entry and she believes the thief may have used a device to spoof the remote and unlock the car. It was parked in the lot of their apartment complex, near the corner of Nobel and Cargill Avenue in North University City.Cassie says she went to the car on Saturday morning to go grocery shopping, and saw the hood popped, trunk opened, glove compartment ajar, and items spread out all over the seats. She says she does not care about other stolen items like a pet transporter and tire chains stolen, but is now on a mission to get the outfit back. "Since it happened, I've been driving around the neighborhood, looking in little pockets and corners, hoping to see abandoned clothes or an abandoned suitcase," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested early Sunday morning after police say she stabbed her son several times. Police responded to the 8000 block of Donzee Street near I-805 and SR-163 just after 2 a.m.According to police, a 71-year-old mother and her 31-year-old son got into an argument when things got physical.The woman reportedly stabbed her son four times before calling police to report the stabbing.The man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
