LOS ANGELES, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Drinking alcohol may raise the likelihood among teenagers to spend more time on computers, a new study suggests. The study, conducted by researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College, was based on a survey of 264 teenagers, aged 13 to 17.Results showed that compared with teens who did not report drinking, those who drank alcohol in the last month used a computer more hours per week for non-school-related activities, including the use of social networking sites.Drinking was also linked to more frequent social networking and listening to and downloading music, according to the study published Monday in the on-line edition of the journal Addictive Behaviors. However, there was no demonstrated link between alcohol use and computer use for school work, neither there was strong link between video games and drinking or on-line shopping and drinking."While the specific factors linking teenage drinking and computer use are not yet established, it seems likely that adolescents are experimenting with drinking and activities on the Internet," said Dr. Epstein, assistant professor of public health at the college."In turn, exposure to on-line material such as alcohol advertising or alcohol-using peers on social networking sites could reinforce teens' drinking."Children are being exposed to computers and the Internet at younger ages. For this reason it's important that parents are actively involved in monitoring their children's computer usage, as well as alcohol use."Teenagers typically first experiment with alcohol at age 12 or 13, according to the study.Family risk factors include lax parental supervision and poor communication, family conflicts, inconsistent or harsh discipline and a family history of alcohol or drug abuse."According to a national study conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, more than half of parents of teenagers had filters installed on the computers their child uses to block content parents find objectionable, yet many parents do not use any form of parental monitoring, particularly for older teens," Epstein said.

BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Doctors may choose riskier treatment with fewer severe side effects for themselves than they'd recommend for their patients, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine Tuesday. In the study, two sets of questions were sent to primary care physicians around the United States. One involved choosing between two types of colon cancer surgery and the other situation involved choosing no treatment for the flu, or choosing a made-up treatment less deadly than the disease but which could cause permanent paralysis. Of 242 physicians who answered the colon cancer questionnaire, 38 percent went with the treatment that carried a higher risk of death but fewer side effects for themselves. By contrast, only a quarter said they would recommend that treatment to their patients. In the flu scenario, 63 percent chose the deadlier option of no treatment for themselves, versus 49 percent recommending it for patients. The findings are important because patients faced with difficult medical decisions often ask their doctors, "What would you do?" The answer reflects the doctors' values -- not necessarily those of the patients.Doctors should know what their patients value most before giving advice, and patients should ask doctors the reasons behind their answers, said study author Dr. Peter Ubel, an internist and behavioral scientist at Duke University.

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's state visit to the United States, during which he reached important consensus with U.S. President Barack Obama on building a cooperative China-U.S. partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit, has been closely followed by world media. The visit has drawn "unprecedented" world attention, said Gu Xuewu, director of the Center for Global Studies at the University of Bonn.NEW CHAPTER IN DEVELOPMENT OF CHINA-U.S. TIESCommenting on Hu's visit, which occurred at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, Professor Severino Cabral, director of Brazil's China and Asia-Pacific Research Institute, said the visit opened a new epoch for China-U.S. relations. The resumption of dialogue between the world's two major economies, which itself is a significant event, would exert great influence on the new world agenda, and hopefully help eliminate the residual cold war mentality and take bilateral relations to a new era, he said.Chen Kang, professor at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, said that the joint statement issued by the two sides during Hu's stay -- built upon bilateral efforts to establish a cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit -- is a clear reflection of the two countries' resolution and pragmatic attitude in jointly meeting global challenges.China Press USA, a New York-based Chinese language newspaper, said in an editorial that the two countries' commitment to building an all-round and mutually beneficial, win-win economic partnership, as put in their joint statement, is the greatest achievement that comes out of the meeting between the leaders of the two countries in the economic sphere.Nouvelles D'Europe, a major Chinese language newspaper in France, said in an editorial that Hu's visit yielded fruitful results which are indispensable to world peace and development. In their joint statement, the two countries for the first time defined that China-U.S. partnership is based on mutual respect and mutual benefit. Stable China-U.S. relations contribute to world stability, and a win-win scenario between China and the United States is conducive to a scenario of multi-party-win in a multipolar world, it said.International Daily News, an Indonesian newspaper, said that Hu's visit achieved a historic breakthrough. Their joint statement signaled a new chapter in their "cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit," and Asia is hailing the new orientation of bilateral ties and achievement set up by the leaders of the two countries.

LOS ANGELES, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Global warming will melt all the ice in the Arctic Ocean every summer, raising earth temperatures even further, researchers at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) warned. The findings, available online Sunday in the April issue of Earth and Planetary Science Letters, a leading journal in geoscience, were based on analysis of the fossilized remains of four-million-year-old mollusks, they said. Two novel geochemical techniques used to determine the temperature at which the mollusk shells were formed suggest that summertime Arctic temperatures during the early Pliocene epoch (3.5 million to 4 million years ago) may have been a staggering 18 to 28 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than today, the researchers said. And these ancient fossils, harvested from deep within the Arctic Circle, may have once lived in an environment in which the polar ice cap melted completely during the summer months, according to the researchers.Such balmy polar weather would certainly melt all the ice in the Arctic Ocean every summer, said Aradhna Tripani, an assistant professor at the UCLA's departments of Earth and space sciences."Our data from the early Pliocene, when carbon dioxide levels remained close to modern levels for thousands of years, may indicate how warm the planet will eventually become if carbon dioxide levels are stabilized at the current value of 400 parts per million," she said. The earth's temperature was raised five to nine degrees Fahrenheit merely by the absence of year-round Arctic ice, according to Tripani. The results of the study lend support to assertions made by climate modelers that summertime sea ice may be eliminated in the next 50 to 100 years, which would have far-reaching consequences for Earth's climate, she said."The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change identifies the early Pliocene as the best geological analog for climate change in the 21st century and beyond," said Tripati. "The climate-modeling community hopes to use the early Pliocene as a benchmark for testing models used for forecasting future climate change."
