BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao left Beijing on Wednesday for the 10th annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) scheduled for June 10-11 in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent.Hu will also pay state visits to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan as guest of Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev respectively.Established in 2001, the regional body SCO now groups China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Britain on Monday pledged to enhance military ties.The pledge came out of the meeting between Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong and visiting British Chief of Defense Staff Jock Stirrup.The military relationship is an important component of China-Britain relations, and the two sides have witnessed frequent exchange of high-level visits and fruitful cooperation in many fields, Guo said.He said China's armed forces attached importance to the friendly cooperation with the British armed forces, and would work with it to enhance mutual trust and expand cooperation.Stirrup echoed Guo saying the military relationship was very important and the British side hoped to strengthen military cooperation with China.The two sides also discussed the development of China-Britain relations and international and regional issues of common concern.Highlighting the development of China-Britain relations in recent years, Guo said the bilateral relationship is at a new historic starting point. BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said Friday that the government would continue to regulate the housing market and resolutely crack down on speculative property investment and other unreasonable market demands.He said the government would continue to increase the supply of affordable housing for low-income families in order to consolidate the effects of the regulation over the past months.He pledged to ensure healthy development of the real estate industry and improve people's living conditions.Inspecting a low-rent housing site in Beijing, Li urged the municipal government to offer preferential policies in the areas of investment, land, and taxation to quicken the construction of affordable housing.He said that the affordable housing program should be transparent and fair in order to allow mid-and-low income residents to benefit.In the face of skyrocketing housing prices, the Chinese government has ordered a stringent credit policy to restrict speculative purchases and has increased spending to build affordable housing.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 10.3 percent year-on-year in July, slower than the 11.4 percent growth in June, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.

MOSCOW, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China has played a role of great importance during the founding and development of G20, Russian presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich said on Monday."Without China's participation, it would be much more difficult for the group to discuss or solve the developmental problems of world economy. Therefore, the participation of China, as well as some other emerging economies like Brazil and India, has become prominently significant," Dvorkovich commented after a news conference ahead of the upcoming G8 and G20 summit in Toronto, Canada.The presidential aide said the Chinese leaders' stance and viewpoints, proposed in the previous three G20 financial summit since November 2008, have helped stabilize the world economy as a whole.Dvorkovich noted that China's decision on further exchange rate reform was not outcome of external pressure.He said that any country, including Russia, China and the United States, could not allow their domestic policies to be ruled by external factors. The nations, however, should understand the common and mutual responsibilities in the global economic system.The delegates to the G20 summit will adjust their polices after consultations, but nobody will bend under pressure, he stressed.Dvorkovich said that several countries may voice concerns over China's exchange rate policies at the summits, but there will not be large-scale discussions over the Chinese currency.The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, announced on Saturday a decision to proceed further with the reform of the exchange rate regime to enhance the flexibility of the RMB's exchange rate.
