SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This Saturday's inauguration of a new president in Mexico was the topic of a forum Thursday at the University of San Diego. Experts and policy makers from both sides of the border shared their thoughts on what the new presidency will mean to the future of the relationship between the United States and Mexico."So much of what happens in Mexico doesn't stay in Mexico and so much of what happens in the United States happens along the U.S-Mexico border," said USD Professor David Shirk, who helped organize Thursday's forum.Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will become the first person to lead Mexico from the political left in several decades after a landslide victory in July elections. He ran on a platform of populist reforms."He's traditionally been a strong supporter of the rights of migrants and respecting their human rights and caring for them," said Tony Wayne, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico from 2011-2015 and attended Thursday's event. He's currently a Public Policy Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Institute."They're going to have to try to pick things up as quickly as they can. Nobody wants a repeat of the kind of incident that you had a few days ago at the border," Wayne said, referring to the clashes between Central American migrants and Border Patrol agents near the San Ysidro border crossing Sunday.Wayne and Shirk share some optimism that Mexico's new administration will be able to find common ground with President Trump, despite their differences on policy. Wayne points out that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be traveling to Mexico the day after Lopez Obrador's inauguration. Shirk says the two presidents have already formed a bond based on similar styles. "As much bluster as we hear from the Trump administration, there's actually quite a bit of cooperation going on with Mexico." 1848

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer called on Governor Gavin Newsom to issue guidance that would allow San Diego's hotel industry to resume hosting business meetings and conferences."It's incredibly important for the jobs that this industry represents and the bottom line of dollars to our city," Faulconer said.San Diego tourism officials tell ABC 10News that the industry has lost an estimated billion due to the pandemic thus far. About 22% of out-of-town visitors to San Diego typically come for business meetings or conferences. The loss of this business has led to the loss of more than 50,000 local hospitality jobs.Thursday, Faulconer visited the Manchester Grand Hyatt to review the safety protocols they would put into place for business travelers. That includes plexiglass dividers, hand sanitizing stations, outdoor meeting spaces, and socially distanced seating."Seeing is believing," Faulconer said. "When you can see firsthand the remarkable precautions that our hotel industry has taken, the remarkable job that they have done with leisure travel, we can host business travel safely.”Faulconer points out that California is the only state in the country that bans hotels from hosting businesses.ABC 10News reached out to the California Department of Public Health. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego International Auto Show announced Wednesday that its 2020 lineup was cancelled.The show was set to take place from December 31 through January 3.“After careful and extensive consideration of the health risks and other factors resulting from COVID-19, the New Car Dealers Association San Diego County will be unable to hold and unfortunately must cancel the San Diego International Auto Show,” the New Car Dealers Association of San Diego County said.The next event is scheduled to take place from December 30, 2021 through January 2, 2022.“As much as we wanted to move forward with the show for all of those who eagerly anticipate it each year, the outbreak of COVID-19 and the pandemic has resulted in a situation where we are unable to hold the show. Of course, the health and safety of all of the workers, exhibitors and attendees who make the auto show such a special event are of vital importance,” said Dean Mansfield, president of the New Car Dealers Association San Diego County, which owns and produces the San Diego International Auto Show. “And given the incredible amount of planning exhibitors must do long in advance of an event of this size and the expenses incurred by all parties, we have endeavored to provide notice of cancellation as soon as reasonably possible,” continued Mansfield. 1346

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This month, thousands will pay tribute to a civil rights icon in one of the nation's largest MLK parades.The 40th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade steps off on Jan. 19, bringing floats, high school bands and drill teams, colleges, churches, and many more to Harbor Drive to honor the work of Dr. King. Alpha Phi Alpha is the oldest African American fraternity in America and King was a once member.The parade and MLK celebrations precede Black History Month beginning in February.MLK in San DiegoKing last visited San Diego in 1964, according to the San Diego History Center. It was arguably at the height of King's most celebrated period, after giving his famous "I Have A Dream" speech and being named Time magazine's "Man of the Year" in 1963.The history center says King's visit also came as black San Diegans routinely saw discrimination. The city had earned the nickname "the Mississippi of the West," according to historians Seth Mallios and Breana Campbell. African Americans were denied loans from banks, housing outside of segregated neighborhoods, and refused entrance by some business owners, the authors wrote.Nonetheless, King's presence in town was well-regarded by those who watched him speak at San Diego State College (now San Diego State University) and California Western University (now Point Loma Nazarene University). One witness recalls King, “was very warm … very genuine [and] seemed to be very caring and sincere ... He spoke to me as though I was someone he was very familiar with.”In his CWU speech, King is quoted as saying:"And may I say to you, my friends, that I still have faith in the future. I know these are difficult moments and so many of us are faced with problems day in and day out. And I know that we are still at the bottom of the economic ladder, still the last hired and the first fired. I know that we are forced to stand amidst conditions of oppression, trampled over day in and day night by the iron feet of injustice.
