President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold his daily news conference on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. ET from the White House briefing room.Trump will likely face questions about mail-in voting after a Fox News interview aired Thursday morning where Trump said he would block funding for the US Postal Service. The service, which has slowed down mail processing, says it is in need of funding to speed up mail delivery. The speed of mail deliveries has prompted concerns that ballots and ballot applications might not arrive in a timely manner. While a number of states have long conducted mail-in voting without issue, more voters are expected to utilize mail-in voting because of the coronavirus pandemic."They want three and a 0 million for something that'll turn out to be fraudulent, that's election money basically. They want .5 billion for the mail-in votes. Universal mail-in ballots. They want billion, billion, for the Post Office. Now they need that money in order to make the Post Office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots," Trump said.Trump has long opposed funding to conduct mail-in voting, repeating claims that mail-in voting leads to fraud. Trump has long tried to sow doubts on US elections; after his 2017 inauguration, he formed a voting fraud commission that disbanded after the panel did not release any reports indicating widespread voting abuses.Trump might also be questioned following comments from CDC Director Robert Redfield, who stated in an interview with WebMD that the coronavirus could cause a deadly fall.“I'm asking you to do four simple things: wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands and be smart about crowds. If we don't do that, as I said last April, this could be the worst fall, from a public health perspective, we've ever had.” 1819
POWAY, Calif., (KGTV)-- Fire crews battled a house fire in Poway Sunday afternoon after neighbors heard hissing sounds and an explosion. Poway and San Diego Fire departments responded to the 13,000 block of Silver Saddle Lane after getting a 9-1-1 call at around 1:15 pm. When crews arrived, they found the side of the home on fire. "The fire was just on the garage and the exterior of the garage. It appears it did not make it into the house," Poway Fire Battalion Chief Ray Fried said. Batt. Chief Fried said the methane levels were too high, above 0 ppm, which meant his fire crews needed to stand down until SDG&E cleared the gas leak. "We're not going inside at this time, because the gas readings are fairly high inside the house," Batt. Chief Fried said. No one was inside the home at the time of the explosion. One family next door was evacuated in an abundance of caution. 894
President Donald Trump designated April 2018 "Second Chance Month" in a presidential proclamation on Friday. The proclamation states that during the month of April, the United States will emphasize the need "to provide opportunities for people with criminal records to earn an honest second chance."A bipartisan group of senators, including Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois and Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, introduced a resolution last year to make April 2017 "Second Chance Month" to honor efforts to help those with criminal records become productive members of society. The Senate passed the resolution in April of last year. A similar resolution was introduced by Democratic Rep. Tony Cardenas of California last week."Affording those who have been held accountable for their crimes an opportunity to become contributing members of society is a critical element of criminal justice that can reduce our crime rates and prison populations, decrease burdens to the American taxpayer, and make America safer," Trump said in his proclamation. The President goes on to urge the implementation of "evidence-based programs" in prison systems at the federal, state and local level that focus on job training, mentoring and treatment for drug and mental health issues.Trump made promises to crack down on crime a prominent part of his 2016 campaign for the White House. In a speech at the Republican National Convention after winning the Republican presidential nomination, Trump vowed that under his leadership the US would "be a country of law and order."Trump also delivered a combative speech in July 2017 calling gang members "animals" and praising law enforcement for being "rough."In January, Trump held a listening session on prison reform with Republican lawmakers and reform advocates in attendance. CNN reported at the time that Jared Kushner, senior adviser to the President and Trump's son-in-law, was spearheading the White House prison reform push. The New York Times reported on Wednesday that Kushner's interest in prison reform is in tension, however, with the tough-on-crime mentality of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The contrast in the two approaches to criminal justice has, in turn, "left both Democratic and Republican lawmakers confused and has contributed to skepticism that the Trump administration is serious about its own proposals," the Times reported. 2403
President Donald Trump hit the campaign trail for the first time since his coronavirus diagnosis.Trump attended a rally in Sanford, Florida, on Monday, before thousands of supporters who were standing shoulder to shoulder. The majority of those in attendance were not donning face coverings, flouting public health recommendations. After the president boarded Air Force One for the flight to Florida, presidential physician Dr. Sean Conley confirmed that Trump has tested negative for the coronavirus and is no longer infectious.Trump declared himself “immune" from the coronavirus to his supporters on Monday.“Now they say I am immune. I feel so powerful. I’ll walk in there, I’ll kiss everyone in that audience,” Trump told supporters. “I’ll kiss the guys and the beautiful women and every mouth. I’ll just give you a big fat kiss.”Florida is a crucial state for Trump to win re-election. While Biden is leading in most major polls in the state, most polls show Biden’s lead is within the margin of error. Only one major poll, last week’s Quinnipiac survey, had Biden’s lead ahead of the margin of error.Meanwhile, Democratic nominee Joe Biden stumped in Cincinnati. Based on polling, Ohio has become a toss-up state after Trump won the state in 2016 by 8%. The five most recent presidential polls in Ohio showed the race within the margin of error. Three of the polls gave Biden a slight edge, one poll had the race tied, and another poll gave Trump a slight lead.Biden’s Ohio rally will be akin to a drive-in, with supporters spaced out in a parking lot.The backdrop of the rallies are amid a rise in coronavirus cases throughout the US. On Friday, Ohio reported its highest number of coronavirus cases in a single day with 1,840 confirmed infections. Florida though is among a handful of states seeing a decrease in cases following a summer surge. While cases are declining, coronavirus-related deaths have remained high in the state. All told, the coronavirus has claimed the lives of more than 15,000 Floridians.Voters have just 22 days to decide on a presidential candidate. 2089
