Did you find yourself cooped up during the pandemic-induced stay-at-home orders, blankly staring at the walls of your house, longing for more?Maybe you wanted to travel or go out to dinner with friends. Or maybe you just wanted a fresh coat of paint on that wall.If you found yourself in the latter camp, you had company: When the home improvement platform Houzz surveyed 1,000 homeowners who use the site in April, nearly 80% said they’re considering remodeling changes that would help them enjoy their houses more. And sales at Home Depot were up 7% in the first quarter of this year compared with the same period last year, a possible sign that consumers were already spending more on home improvement materials.Although now might seem like the perfect time for DIY home improvement, be sure to consider our new reality. Plan the project’s size, type and budget to fit current circumstances.Plan your projectWhether it’s a wall in need of color or a drab backyard that could use some landscaping, start by knowing what you want to accomplish. Then, put together a plan. When determining the project you’ll take on, think about what’s within your skillset and what you can accomplish during the upcoming months. For example, if you want to remodel your bathroom, put in some flower beds and redo the siding on your house, start with the flower beds since it’s easier and timely. Some projects are better left for professionals or for a later date. You might decide to wait to renovate a bathroom when you’re holed up for the winter and to hire a professional for the siding since it’s complicated to install. But realize that it might be difficult to get a professional on the phone given the uncertain state of businesses and stay-at-home orders. As well, resist the temptation to do everything yourself.“Wiring and plumbing shouldn’t be DIY unless you know something about it,” says Alexandra Barker, principal at Barker Associates Architecture Office in New York. “Because then, if you’re in a crisis, it’s hard to get a plumber or electrician to answer your calls right now.”Vicki and Steph Kostopoulos, a mother-daughter duo who run the “Mother Daughter Projects” blog, suggest holding off on any project that involves a lot of sanding — during which you would need to wear an N95 mask — given the current demand for personal protective equipment in hospitals.Do your researchChoosing a home-improvement project can be exciting, but figuring out exactly how to do it is an altogether more difficult task.“Before you start a project, watch a number of videos on how to do it so you can make sure you understand the process,” says Steph Kostopoulos. “By watching multiple sources, you’ll be able to get an idea of how it’s done.”YouTube has countless hours of DIY videos, but the quality varies. For consistent and knowledgeable how-to videos, check out This Old House, a home improvement series that makes seemingly complicated DIY projects more accessible. Apartment Therapy is another reliable resource.Set your project budgetYou know what you want to accomplish and how you would do it — but can you afford it? Make sure you know the total cost of a project, then review your budget and see how much of your expendable income can be allocated for it.The budgeting process might take some negotiation between what you can afford right now and what you want to accomplish. Given that we’re in a recession, it’s best to avoid going into debt or tapping your emergency fund for home improvements.Consider making a simple spreadsheet that lists the items you need and how much they’ll cost. That lets you prepare for and track the cost of the project. And pad it a bit because your project will likely cost more than that when it’s done, Barker says.“You always have to add in 10% or 15% of cost overage to your project budget,” she says. “You never know if your dog or cat could knock over your can of paint, then you have to buy another. Expect the unexpected as part of your budgeting.”If you find the total expenses are more than what you can afford right now, see if you can divide the project into more manageable chunks over time. This will help you get started without stretching your finances. This article was written by NerdWallet and was originally published by The Associated Press.More From NerdWalletHow ‘Maximizers’ Can Cut Decision-Making AngstTime’s Running Out to File Yahoo Data Breach ClaimsSmartMoney Podcast: Prepping Your Money for a Recession, What to Do with a ,000 InheritanceSean Pyles is a writer at NerdWallet. Editor's note: There are no triggering images embedded in this story. However, to explain to those without trypophobia what the disorder is like, we have had to use a few descriptive phrases of common triggers. Please be cautious while reading. It was supposed to be a fun lunch outing in the Big Apple with her mother and grandmother. But when Jennifer Andresen saw an advertisement for this season's "American Horror Story" on the side of a New York taxi, she had to pull her car over, and fast."I was having a full-blown panic attack," said Andresen, who lives in Norwalk, Connecticut. "My pulse was racing. I was so nauseous. I thought I would throw up. My mother and grandmother were like, 'What is wrong with you?' I didn't want to ruin my family's day, but I couldn't help myself."What Andresen has is trypophobia, an intense, irrational fear of small holes and clusters of circles and bumps, such as those in a honeycomb, lotus flower or bubble bath. The phobia is a key part of this season's "American Horror Story: Cult," as the main character, Ally Mayfair Richards (played by Sarah Paulson), is overwhelmed in the first episode by some holes in her soufflé and a coral in her therapist's office that she feels is staring at her."My husband and I were watching 'American Horror Story,' and I didn't have any idea what the show would be about," Andresen said, her voice rising nervously. "The piece of coral she saw freaked me out so badly that I had to tell my husband. Up to now, I've kept it to myself because it seemed so silly, so odd."Andresen has general anxiety and "a bit" of obsessive-compulsive disorder, so her family was comforting. But that's not the reaction she gets from others. Other people say, 'What is wrong with you?' They don't understand," Andresen said. "But it's like anything else people can get upset about. People are scared of spiders, heights, clowns, and I'm scared of this. It's an actual phobia. It's real. It's definitely not a joke.""American Horror Story" is promoting its new season widely, with bizarre images of body parts and clowns photo-edited full of holes. (The main character is also scared of clowns.) It was one of those large posters -- an image of a woman's face licking upward with a tongue riddled with holes -- that triggered Andresen."With the media exposure from 'American Horror Story,' it's going to get worse, and people are going to try to trigger us," said Sue M. of Hampshire, England. Sue, who has suffered from trypophobia since she was 5, did not want her last name to be used."I've seen an exponential increase of trigger images on Facebook and across the Internet," Sue said. "We'd had people join our Facebook support group, be welcomed into the community and then post a trigger picture and do harm to the group."Why do people do that? I suppose they enjoy seeing the reaction," she mused. "They are not only bullies but cowards as well, hiding behind their false name and the anonymity of the Internet." 2994

During the second national lockdown in the United Kingdom, the country’s coronavirus cases dropped by about 30 percent, according to a new study. The report, from the Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission (REACT) program in the UK, looked at swab tests on more than 105,000 people between November 13 and 24.Researchers found about .96 percent of the sample tested positive for coronavirus. This compares to about 1.32 percent positive swab tests of a similar sample in a November 2 report.“Three weeks into the second national lockdown in England there has been a ~30% proportionate reduction in prevalence overall,” the REACT report concluded. However, “average absolute prevalence remains high at ~1%. Continued monitoring of the epidemic in the community remains essential until prevalence is reliably suppressed to much lower levels, for example, through widespread vaccination.”An estimated one in 100 people have coronavirus in the UK, according to the study. The UK’s lockdown started on November 5, and data has indicated there was a spike in cases right after, according to the BBC, as symptoms started to show before the effects of the lockdown. The four-week lockdown is set to be lifted Wednesday in the UK, and regions will fall into one of a few tiers based on the rate of infections in that area. The study’s authors said the latest round of test results show a higher prevalence of positive coronavirus tests in school-aged children, however they note schools have stayed open. The UK’s second lockdown kept schools open while the majority of other businesses closed and residents were asked to stay home and not socialize. The country has been paying 80 percent of employee wages during lockdown. They also found a higher prevalence of positive tests from healthcare workers compared to the October data.Researchers estimate the so-called coronavirus reproduction rate, or number of people who will contract the virus from one infected person, has dropped to about .88. Roughly, this means less than one person contracts the coronavirus from each infected person. 2095

Doctors are getting a better understanding of how using marijuana can affect a breastfeeding mother's milk supply -- and for how long.A study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics found that low levels of chemicals in marijuana, like tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, were measurable in several mothers' breast milk up to six days after they said they smoked pot or ate an edible, among other forms of use."Whether this means that some level -- or any level -- of these metabolites can negatively influence child development is unknown at this point," said senior study author Christina Chambers, a professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego and director of clinical research for the Department of Pediatrics at UCSD and Rady Children's Hospital. 778
