SAN FRANCISCO, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Oracle Corp. on Monday announced that its co-president Safra Catz is taking the additional position as the software giant's chief financial officer (CFO), following the resignation of its current CFO Jeff Epstein.Epstein was named Oracle's CFO in September 2008, and had reported directly to Catz. Oracle didn't give details about Epstein's departure.Catz joined Oracle in April 1999 and has been its president since January 2004. She previously served as the company's CFO from November 2005 to September 2008."Safra already has the long-standing confidence of our employees, our Board and our shareholders," Oracle's chief executive officer Larry Ellison said in a statement, adding that " there is no more logical choice for CFO.""The CFO function has reported to Safra for a number of years and she's acted as Oracle's CFO in the past. BAODING, Hebei, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Thursday called for efforts to promote welfare for senior citizens and vowed to improve the country's health care system to make medical services more affordable.Hu made the call during a three-day inspection tour in Baoding City of northern province of Hebei starting on Tuesday, during which he visited orphans, talked to senior citizens and extended festival greetings to local residents.At a nursing center in Shunping County of Baoding City, Hu offered New Year greetings to senior citizens, orphans and staff of the center.Hu wished the senior citizens good health and a long life, encouraged orphans to study hard, and thanked the staff for the care given to the aged.The Communist Party of China (CPC) and the government will make strenuous efforts to improve the welfare of seniors and make sure their difficulties are solved and they have access to better services, Hu said.When visiting Zhao Helou, a Baoding retiree who has been hospitalized several times and living in difficult circumstances, Hu promised assistance from the Party and the government to help Zhao tide over her problems.The health care and medical insurance system would be improved in the future to tackle people's difficulties in medical care, Hu promised.During his visit to Baoding, Hu also inspected drought conditions at wheat fields, joined villagers during New Year celebrations and extended Spring Festival greetings to passengers, station workers and volunteers.Hu, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, was briefed on the work of Hebei's provincial committee of the CPC and the provincial government during his tour.

WUHAN, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Ten people were comfirmed dead and nine others injured when a farmer's tricycle rolled over into an 8-meter deep gully at about 2:30 p.m. Monday at a village in Lichuan City, Hubei province.Eight passengers were found dead on the spot. The eleven wounded were hastened to the hospital. But two of them died on the way.Sources with the Lichuan government said the farmer's vehicle carried the passengers illegally. The rescue operation continued until midnight. The actual cause for accident was still under investigation.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Major trading partners of the United States, including China, did not manipulate their currencies to gain an unfair advantage in international trade in 2010, according to a report released by the U.S Treasury Department on Friday."Based on the resumption of exchange rate flexibility last June and the acceleration of the pace of real bilateral appreciation over the past few months," China's behavior did not qualify under the official definition of manipulation, the Treasury said in its long-delayed semiannual report to the Congress on International Economic and Exchange Rate Policies.With respect to exchange rate policies, ten economies were reviewed in this report, accounting for nearly three-fourths of U. S. trade. Many of the economies have fully flexible exchange rates. A few have more tightly managed exchanges rates, with varying degrees of management."No major trading partners of the United States" met the standards identified by the Congress as currency manipulator, concluded the report.Since the June 19, 2010 announcement by China's central bank of greater exchange rate flexibility, its currency, also known as renminbi (RMB) has appreciated 3.7 percent against the dollar, or about 6 percent annualized. The renminbi has appreciated 26 percent in total against the dollar since 2005.The Treasury said that because inflation in China is significantly higher than it is in the U.S., the RMB has been appreciating more rapidly against the dollar on a real, inflation- adjusted basis, at a rate which if sustained would amount to more than 10 percent per year.The U.S. accuses Beijing of keeping its currency undervalued, flooding the country with cheap exports and costing U.S. jobs. But many economists believe that the appreciation of RMB will help little to the U.S. employment."Treasury today again made the right call on China's currency policy in its latest exchange rate report," John Frisbie, President of the U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC) said in a statement after the U.S. Treasury Department'report."While USCBC believes that China should allow its exchange rate to better reflect market forces, designating China as a ' manipulator' would achieve nothing. USCBC continues to support the Obama administration's approach of combined multilateral and bilateral engagement with China as the most effective way to make progress on the exchange rate issue."

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- China Friday urged the United Nations and Security Council to give more attention to Africa and called on the international community to provide greater support to the region in order to maintain peace and security. Addressing an open debate of the UN Security Council on the interdependence between security and development, Li Baodong, China's permanent representative to the UN said the inter-linkages between peace and development are most pronounced in Africa. There will be no world prosperity and stability without peace and development in the region. He called on the international community to provide greater support and more assistance to regional countries, AU and other regional and subregional organizations to maintain African peace and security. Li stressed that security and development are mutually linked and reinforcing. To safeguard peace and promote development, the international community should increase development input and eradicate root causes of conflicts. "Poverty and underdevelopment are the major causes for triggering conflicts and breeding terrorism. The developed countries should further increase its development aid, provide debts relief to developing countries, open up markets, transfer technology and help the developing countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals as soon as possible." Li said development can be anchored only in an environment free from war and turbulence. The UN and Security Council should vigorously promote peaceful culture, encourage and support peaceful resolutions to disputes through dialogue, consultations and good offices. In addition, greater emphasis should be given to peacebuilding so as to prevent relapse into conflicts. "In post-conflict countries and regions, simultaneous progress should be made in the fields of politics, security and development throughout development and reconstruction process, " said Li. "Capacity building should be prioritized in the post-conflict countries to enhance governance, provide basic services, advance development and reconstruction so that the people could enjoy peaceful 'dividend' quickly. This is conducive to consolidating political reconciliation process and stabilizing post-conflict situations, " he said.
