Americans are calling out practices at some car lots more now than ever before.“We found a pattern of abusive and deceptive practices that the auto loan industry has been employing and unfortunately these complaints have sharply increased during the pandemic,” said Lucy Baker, Consumer Program Associate at U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG).Looking at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's consumer complaint database, the U.S. PIRG found between March and July, there were more than 2,800 auto loan and lease complaints. That's more than any other 5-month period.This includes complaints like not getting auto loan relief, which the CARES Act didn't specify, but some lenders offered to work with customers. Also, complaints about broken payment systems that led to late fees, and issues with loan terms changing or yo-yo financing.“You go into a dealership, you buy a car you sign on the dotted line, but as your driving away, you get a phone call from your dealer that says, ‘hey the financing has fallen through, I’m going to take your car back unless you agree to pay more or pay a higher interest rate,’” said Baker.There were complaints about harassment over repossession and debt, as well as expensive add-ons like warranties, insurance, and service plans.High pressure tactics were another problem.“If you put somebody in a room for a long period of time, they're going to be so frustrated that they are going to want to get out of there and then you can pressure them into buying these things they don’t need,” said Baker.U.S. PIRG is pushing policymakers for auto loan relief programs, banning repossession, debt collection and negative credit reporting.It also has some recommendations for customers: Don't roll an old auto loan into a new loan, avoid buy here – pay here lots, and don’t get focused on low monthly payments. Instead, compare the total cost of the loan including interest paid.Officials also suggest filing complaints with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. America's Paralyzed Veterans are urging disabled voters to make a plan for Election Day, and to read up on their rights before heading to the polls.Al Kovach has been there. As in, he tried to vote, and couldn't.“About 20 years ago, I went to cast a vote assuming the place would be wheelchair accessible and I was wrong and I was unable to vote, I was basically denied my right to vote,” Kovach said.Fast forward to today, and he says, we're still talking about polling and voting challenges for the disabled. Ever since that experience, he's opted for mail-in ballots. This year, he's urging everyone to plan ahead.“Unfortunately, there’s no ADA police going around and enforcing the law so when it comes to polling stations, if you go to a polling station and you can’t get in, your only recourse is to go to Department of Justice and file a complaint, but that doesn’t help you in that moment to cast your vote," said Kovach.As if it weren't complicated enough, he's reminding everyone to be mindful of the coronavirus. The disabled are medically fragile, he says, and more susceptible to serious implications from the coronavirus.“We are seeing a lot of people calling us with trouble with voting,” Kovach said. “I know in San Diego, we had someone who tried to vote last week and was unable to get inside the polling station and another gentleman in Chicago sat in line in his wheelchair for hours around people not socially distancing or wearing a mask.”The U.S. Government Accountability office sampled 178 polling places in 2016 and found that 60% had accessibility impediments, including steep ramps, lack of signage, and poor parking or paths. Federal law requires that polling places be accessible to all voters.“Election officials need to comply with not only the Help America Vote Act... but also the Americans with Disabilities Act, so it is important to make sure that all Americans are able to vote independently and privately,” said Ben Hovland, chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, which focuses on election administration and how elections are run around the country.Hovland says elections officials everywhere are scrambling. Most everyone is adapting to COVID-19 restrictions, which has forced significant changes at the local level. He too is asking people to plan.“Record numbers of Americans will be voting by mail this year and vote by mail has some challenges for Americans with disabilities,” Hovland said. “We’ve seen states implement portals that work with assistive technology and we’ve seen ballots that utilize hole punches near the signature lines of the absentee ballot envelope.”“A polling station might focus on wheelchair accessibility but forget the fact that there are people who can’t see or can’t hear and I want to make sure that people with disabilities know you can bring a friend with them to help them cast their vote. That is their right,” Kovach said.Kovach adds there's a checklist on the Paralyzed Veterans of America Website. He recommends people check out what's on that list, and understand what works or won't work for you. Americans aren’t exercising like they used to.“I’ve definitely been walking a whole lot less since the coronavirus hit,” Nathan Martin said.With social distancing orders put into place, the pandemic has many people spending more time at home.“I was a little bit less active and more Netflix,” Hannah Hockensmith said.Now, a new study is showing this drop in physical activity is increasing health concerns across the globe.“COVID-19 is a worldwide phenomenon unlike anything else we’ve seen in generations,” said Dr. Geoff Tison, a cardiologist at the University of California, San Francisco.Tison recently finished a new study using smartphone apps to track the step counts from almost half a million people in countries worldwide.The data was collected from mid-January to early June and the findings show the world is walking a lot less.“Within the first month of the pandemic, declaration activity decreased by about 27%,” he said.Tison says this lack of physical activity could damage people’s health, especially in older adults.“With decreased activity, increased sitting on the couch, just not being as active is muscle mass can start to decrease as can bone density,” he said.In America, the study shows the biggest drop in step counts happened in New York City while Dallas had the smallest decrease.“The changes in activity seem to reflect adherence to social distancing at least to a degree,” Tison said.To increase exercise indoors, Tison says is all about thinking outside the box.“You can do similar exercises, work similar muscles with things around the house,” he said. “Use a gallon of milk instead of a dumbbell.”To exercise outdoors, however, Tison believes changes need to happen at the city and state levels.“Policy makers, governments need to be creative understanding that people are humans and want to be active and want do things,” he said. “But to enable them to do that safely.” 1913
Applebee's announced Tuesday it will close as many as 80 restaurants nationwide as the chain continues to struggle attracting young diners.The announcement comes after Applebee's parent company, DineEquity, said in August it would close more than 100 restaurants.It's not clear which Applebee's locations would close, but according to Fortune, remaining locations will be judged on a number of criteria. “The expected closures will be based on several criteria, including meeting our brand and image standards as well as operational results,” DineEquity told Fortune in a statement.DineEquity also announced it would close up to 40 IHOP locations, though it plans to open as many as 100 new locations of the breakfast chain throughout the country.DineEquity's stock has soared since the announcement, rising nearly 20 percent on Tuesday.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. (CNS) - Part of Disney California Adventure will open without rides Thursday but plenty of shopping and dining.Billed as an extension of Downtown Disney, Buena Vista Street will be gussied up for the holidays, offering socially distanced outdoor dining at favorite restaurants including Carthay Circle Lounge where Chef Andrew Sutton, culinary director of Signature Restaurants, says Al Fresco Dining at Carthay Circle Lounge will be "like sitting in a European sidewalk cafe.""We literally borrowed tables from some of the other restaurants," he said in remarks reported by the Orange County Register. "Then we started to get more serious about it, bringing in planters, and gardening, and making it look much more refined. The finished product is beautiful."Parts of the park are opening for retail and dining as an extension of the Downtown Disney District. Reservations won't be accepted, but a mobile wait list system will be in place when the restaurant is at capacity.Diners can choose to provide their name and mobile number to receive a text message when it's time to return. Mobile ordering will be available at Smokejumpers Grill and Award Wieners.Buena Vista Street will be open daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There's no admission charge to enter and guests can park in the Simba lot as they do for Downtown Disney.
