SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was fatally shot by San Diego Police as officers responded to calls of vandalism in the Mountain View neighborhood early Monday morning.According to police, officers were called to the 300 block of South Pardee Street just before 4:30 a.m. after receiving reports of “a violent disturbance involving a weapon.”Residents at the home were woken up by a man they say ripped a metal curtain rod from the window and began breaking windows and other objects.“Fearing for their safety, they asked another resident to call 911. A neighbor also heard the commotion and called 911 reporting it sounded like someone was being tortured,” police said. When officers arrived, police say they gave the man directions in English and Spanish but received no response. According to police, that’s when the man crawled through a broken window before running towards officers with a metal pole.“Fearing for their safety, one officer fired a bean bag round, one officer fired a Taser, and one officer fired several rounds from his service pistol. The man was struck by at least one round and fell to the ground where he was taken into custody,” police said.Police rendered first aid to the suspect who was taken to the hospital where he later died. The suspect and officers involved haven’t been identified at this time.Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. 1487

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Paradise Hills family is in search of a good Samaritan after a young autistic man was mugged and beaten for his brand new iPhone, just blocks from his home. The incident played out along Briarwood Road on an afternoon two weeks ago. Garrett De Leon had just gotten off work and off the bus.His pride and joy was in his right hand - a new iPhone 10 that his parents gave to him for his birthday. Deleon was texting his mom that he was blocks from home, when it happened."This guy came from behind me and snatched my phone and pushed me to the ground," said De Leon.De Leon says he fought back, the two struggling on the ground. "He pushed me again and runs to the car," said De Leon.Deleon says he chased the man - a tall, lean black man wearing a beanie - to an older black car, where the man jumped in the back seat, the window rolled down."He tells his buddy to take off immediately," said De Leon. In the meantime, the thief was hitting De Leon, who says he was delivering his own blows through the window."I had too much adrenaline and didn't feel pain. Hopped up on anger and determined to get at them and at the phone," said De Leon. After the car started up, it dragged De Leon some 100 feet before he was thrown off, bloodied with cuts and and scrapes, and a sprained hand.Soon after, a Hispanic woman in her 20s, with a baby in her back seat, raced to his side. She tended to him before calling 9-1-1."Shows there are good people. She was more worried about me than her baby," said De Leon. When help arrived and she left, De Leon never got her name. "I wish I could thank her as a mom, as a person," said Shawn De Leon, Garrett's mother. She says she prefers to focus on the actions of that stranger, and not the other one."There are bad things happen to good people, and there are good people that rally when bad things happen," said Shawn De Leon.If you know who the Good Samaritan is, send tips to Tips@10news.com. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help De Leon buy a new iPhone. 2022

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man was arrested Thursday after attacking police with railroad spikes and rocks in a Barrio Logan train yard, police said.San Diego Police were called to the BNSF Railway Yard along Harbor Drive around 10 a.m. to reports of a trespasser. Officers arrived to find a man who had armed himself with a stick and railroad spikes, police said. The suspect reportedly threw the spike at officers and fled under a rail car, refusing to come out. The man also threatened to kill a police K-9 on scene, SDPD added.Police created "decision making space" and tried to talk the suspect into surrendering. After those efforts failed, officers used shotgun beanbags, pepper balls, and eventually a K-9 officer to get the man to surrender. He was pulled from under the railcar and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries, including dog bites, police confirmed. No officers were injured during the event. 927

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new grant is helping a San Diego nonprofit expand its services during the coronavirus pandemic.Kitchens for Good recently got a ,000 grant from the San Diego Foundation and San Diego Gas & Electric. With the new money, Kitchens for Good is now cooking 7,000 meals each week, which local food banks give away to people in need. The meals are "heat and eat," said co-founder Aviva Paley. That helps people who can't cook or don't have a full kitchen get healthy meals."If you are a home-bound senior or someone who doesn't have a full kitchen or the capacity to cook for yourself, it can be really difficult to turn that bag of mixed match groceries into a healthy nutritious meal," said Paley. Before the pandemic, Kitchens for Good made 2,000 meals per week. The program provided job and skills training to people with troubled past, many of whom had been in prison or experienced homelessness.RELATED: San Diego program transforming lives in the kitchenThe grant is helping Kitchens for Good rehire some of their graduates who had lost jobs during the pandemic."Many of our apprentices have been on that other end of the food line; hungry, hopeless and homeless," said Paley. "This gives them an opportunity to really support someone. And they know how much food can mean to someone who's really struggling."The grant will allow Kitchens for Good to make an additional 100,000 by the end of 2020. They plan to make 275,000 more meals over the next year. For more information on the program, click here. 1535

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of activists are upset after the San Diego Police Department rescheduled a Black History Month celebration for the department's current and former black police officers. The department's celebration was scheduled to take place Saturday, February 24th, but was canceled just days before. The group says a committee of officers was appointed to plan the event in January. They think the cancellation was politically motivated. Monica Montgomery spoke during a brief press conference on Monday at the Civic Center Plaza. She thinks the decision to reschedule the event was made after the keynote speaker was announced. The speaker was supposed to be Geneviéve Jones-Wright, the candidate for San Diego district attorney. She's running against interim D.A., Summer Stephan. The police department told 10News the event was rescheduled due to planning conflicts. Lt. Scott Wahl said they plan on notifying officers when a new date is set. The D.A. sent 10News the following statement: "District Attorney Summer was not involved in the planning or the rescheduling of this event." 1143
