SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Maintenance crews were hard at work at UC San Diego Tuesday fortifying campus buildings ahead of the rainstorms expected this week, all while several dorms continued to dry out from the last one.Workers shored up roofs and deployed straw wattles and 200 sandbags near the Marshall Lower Apartments. Convention kicks off Friday at the Sheraton Harbor Island. About 1,000 Republican delegates will be voting on a variety of endorsements for this year's ballot.G.O.P. gubernatorial candidates like Travis Allen and John Cox will attend, hoping to earn enough delegate votes for the party's endorsement for this year's election.The party is focussed only on state offices and initiatives - such as repealing the gas tax, said Cynthia Bryant, the state party's executive director.This is San Diego's second major political convention leading up to the June primary. The Democrats held their statewide convention here in February - with a who's who of national politicians.It was also the site of major news when the party declined to endorse Sen. Dianne Feinstein in her bid for re-election.The big difference for Republicans is that the party will not be taking up major federal issues like gun rights and immigration, Bryant said. The state party also won't be adopting a platform. Instead, Republicans will be focussing on the big decisions in the state - like repealing the recent 12 cent per gallon gas tax hike.They'll also be endorsing candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor, and attorney general. Still, Thad Kousser, who chairs the political science department at UC San Diego, says a lot of the decisions made could shape whether the Republicans can recruit new members. "Is this going to be a red meat crowd that really responds only to the visceral issues of immigrations? Or is it going to be a more strategic party that responds to issues that could help Republicans expand their base?" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s a great time to buy a used car. “These deals are once in a lifetime,” said Ivan Drury, a used car expert with Edmunds. Amid the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic, used car prices have been decreasing. According to Bloomberg News, the average price of a used car fell 11.4% from March to April. Drury predicts those prices could continue to fall, as desperate rental car companies start to offload unused inventory. Hertz, which filed for bankruptcy on Friday, has a fleet of about 500,000 vehicles. It’s unclear what their plan is for them, but Drury suspects they will only keep enough to maintain a basic level of service. “That influx of used vehicles will have a dramatic impact on price,” he said. Adding to the supply of used cars, Drury predicts that some drivers who have leased cars will hold on to them for a few more months rather than trade them in. But in several months to a year, he expects that could lead to another flood of used vehicles. “You kind of have a perfect storm for used car values to drop even further,” said Drury. 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jurors have reached their verdict in the trial of a man accused of killing a Navy sailor on a Logan Heights freeway ramp in 2018.Edson Acuna, 26, was found guilty of first-degree murder, robbery, and several other charges in connection with the murder of 21-year-old Curtis Adams on Oct. 27, 2018. Adams was driving on I-15 at about 2 a.m., when he came upon what appeared to be a disabled vehicle. As Adams got out of his vehicle to check on the car's occupants when he was shot.Prosecutors say Acuna and three others had burglarized a Mt. Hope home that night, before getting into a shootout with the home's residents. As they fled, one of their vehicle's tires were shot out. According to AAA of Southern California, 3.5 million SoCal residents plan to travel for the holiday, marking an all-time travel record for the holiday for the third year in a row. 79 percent of travelers in California are expected to travel by car, while 13 percent are planning to fly. Eight percent will travel by other means.
